Official CJ-8.com Forum Lurker Intro Thread!

Well since I've made a bunch of other postings maybe I should introduce myself.

I'm Aaron and am currently looking for my next scrambler to purchase. I've had 3 previously. 2 were basket cases that I didn't do anything with and just resold. The 3rd was a pile the P.O. drove from CA to MO. Somewhere along the way the trans, and rear axle gave out. I bought it (rust free) cheap, threw replacement parts in it and resold it. I made a nice profit, but sadly the $ was more important than getting to build it since I was in college.

Now time to actually build an 8.

I have built a few CJ7s in the past but I always wanted the extra room of a CJ8 and it looks like I may be getting one so I thought I would say hello. I have lurked around here off and on for awhile and it looks like yall have a good forum and I'm sure I will be able to pick up some CJ8 tips.

Welcome, you're in fine shape if you have experience with -7s, you're just upgrading models :D

alright guys.

i am in the process of acquiring a cj-8. the thing is it is totally in pieces. supposed to pick it up on saturday.

I am pretty excited and have appreciated reading some of the build-up threads. very interesting stuff and i think they have given me a few ideas of what i think i want. obviously that can change.

Also this will be my first jeep. but my brother in law has 2 and some experience in putting these things together and accessorizing. :D

and here is the cj. i just got finished checking the straps after going 60+ for the first few minutes after picking it up on saturday.

You weren't kidding about it being in pieces! However, I don't see a body on there?! Is this just the first load?

body is on the far side of the trailer (it is navy blue). we loaded some of the stuff into the body to make it all fit. the rollbar is actually sitting in the body.

I guess it is just hard to see. Can't wait to see it go back together!

Ugh, I hate to hear that man. You should start a thread on here with some pictures of what you have to start with and show us where the issues are so folks can offer up opinions and suggestions. You're certainly in the right place to find help though.

Oh goody, I've been activated!

I don't own a CJ-8 yet, but I'll probably own one in a few days. But I plan to ask quite a few questions first.

But that'll be for another thread :D

Hi everyone, new guy here, just found these forums a couple days ago. I currently have a CJ-7, two XJ's and a Deuce and a half, but always wanted a Scrambler. Hope it happens one day, they are not nearly as numerous here as other Jeeps. And the ones they do have here either are expensive or the owner doesn't want to sell. Can't blame them, though.

Welcome! FYI, we have a forum here specifically for non-Scrambler pics/builds and we loooove pictures, so feel free to throw up some of your rigs (especially the deuce ;) Love those things!)

You're in the right place to look for a Scrambler for sure. :smokin:

Welcome!

Welcome to the forum Duece! Seems more and more folks are jumpin on the 2 1/2ton band wagon lately.?.
As a side note to you, do you think there is any market for an electric impact kit that runs off the Slave cable on the duece? I have a complete one with sockets, extentions, and the impact w/cable....was wondering if it had any value? I don't have a duece but maybe one day? What would something like this be worth? Its packed in its metal box and is way heavy so shipping would stink but..?

New Scrambler Owner in FL

Hello everyone,
I just bought my first Jeep and very happy it is a Scrambler. I have kids and they have friends so we just installed a second backseat and they love it. I have no experience with older cars, my Mom raised me so Dad was not around to show me how to fix things so I will be headed down that road with the 85 Scrambler I just picked up from a guy in GA.

Great to be part of such a good web-site. I look forward to learning from all of you as things pop up. Three quick questions:

1. The Jeep has a pretty cheap paint job and they covered over the Jeep, says Joop, with a new paint job, will the ee come out if they remove the old paint?
2. How much should a paint job run (recommend a good paint job or do people like to change out the color of their jeep so don't spend much on it)?
3. A local shop said the would undercoat the Jeep for $150.00, is that something that you would recommend doing to minimize rust in the future and to stop any existing rust from getting worse?

Thanks everyone!

Welcome!

1. the Joop is in the metal, not the paint. Lots of discussion around the reasons why, but many came like that from the factory. Sorry.

2. totally depends, frankly, I wouldn't bother without removing the body from the frame and having it done "right". I just don't think it's worth the money otherwise and you can just work to protect what you have until you can take the body off and take care of everything needed before painting and prep it really well. Other option is to find another body, prep/paint it and swap them out to minimize the down time.

3. Same as #2, I wouldn't do this without taking off the body and prepping it all well. Undercoat on top of rust or impropery prepared surfaces will do more damage than help in my opinion. Covering rust without killing it is just hiding it and giving it free reign on your sheet metal. I would not do this if I were you.

I will admit... I am a 'lurker'. I don't see too many girls on here and have been afraid to post anything. I have been reading a ton and am going to start my resto on my 81 Scrambler hopefully next month. I have really learned a bunch and many thanks to all who have posted! I grew up racing off road (CJ7 & J10) in my teens and its been a while since I have been thru a rebuild...wish me luck!:fingerscrossed:

Welcome, you'll find there's no need to worry about posting around here.

Now we need to see some pictures of your rig! We'll need to know what you're starting with. Sounds like time for a build thread

:D
