Project "Blue", My 1987 J20 Build

Good Deal. I have ordered some stuff from The Flop Shop for the Scrambler and like their products a lot great workmanship.

looks great Randy Those mounts and that winch plate look very stout.

Got the front half of the frame cleaned and painted over the weekend. Wire brushed, then treated with rust converter, then epoxy primer and epoxy top coated satin black.

Then I answered an add on craigslist and ended up getting an uncut harness, computer, intake, brackets, round coils, exhaust manifolds, pretty much everything else I'll need for the engine. Score!

It's a flex fuel setup so I'll need to run a return line, but I also get the bigger injectors in case I get power hungry. I'm probably going to delete the flex fuel programming itself- I kept the sensor and the program on my Scrambler and there isn't flex fuel available anywhere near here.

Nice score! Chassis is awesome. When I first read it I thought it said a "Flux Capacitor" fuel system. Would you mind picking me up September first 1967 please?

Toby- If only it was possible...we could buy new Scramblers and FSJ's...Microsoft and Apple stock cheap...and maybe even take a bit better care of ourselves when we were young. It's nice to dream...

Nice Randy and how is the home improvement work coming along?

Slow, Dennis. Had a little talk with the builder today. Hope it speeds up...

Sorry to hear that. I can read between the lines on the rest.

Well, good news, the builder is personally taking over the project. He'll be here tomorrow AM with his hammer and helpers.

Really pleased with the Flop Shop mounts. They fit great, and look like they will provide great clearance too.

I think I found the seats I'm going with. Procar by Scat. Either the Classic Lowback-

Or the Pro 90 lowback.

The Classic looks like the Mustang seats of the 60s. Both are nice.

The Classic has the Mustang look while the Pro 90 has a VW flavor. I'm leaning towards the Classic, it's an inch wider on the bottom...

Looks like the Classic will hold you in place a little better, too. If you take a steamer to the vinyl, or a heat gun or hair dryer carefully, those loose areas should tighten up. Even sitting in the sun on a hot day (won't happen for awhile) would help. Having the French seams, instead of the welts, will last longer as you slide in and out of the seat.

Just found out some interesting info on the J-20. A prior owner contacted me on IFSJA- he bought it from a tow company to harvest the performance built 401 out of it. He believes the 401 was built in Al Unser Jr's shop. He still has the heads...he sold the rest of the truck to someone in Springfield, where I bought it. That was probably the guy I got it from, he installed the old 360 4V from a 77 Chief, which was rusting away in a field. The Chief doors and some trim parts were in the bed when I bought it.

I'm hoping I can discover the chain of ownership from Al Unser Jr to the Tow company...

I read about Al Unsers 401 blue truck. Since this is about the only place I use on the computer, chances are the information trail you are searching for is on this sight somewhere.

Needed to get the firewall painted and the engine stuffed before moving it into the new shop. Used a Preval sprayer, got about what you would expect with a rattle can. Color is good, finish is far from glassy. But it is perfect for under the hood. All I can say is- this truck will be dang sexy once it’s repainted. I love this blue!
