Hot days and dusty/fiberglassy in the garage... but making progress.

Anyone need a 4 cylinder/T176/D300 drive train? going up for sale on CL once I pull it.
I drove it... probably would still $1200 on the whole thing as a starting price.

After that, was looking at the absolute rust mess the grille has on it.

Not sure what caused it to go up to the parking lights, but my guess is leaves/pine, or salt in the face a lot.

So, got them cut apart (they welded them for shipping) and then proceeded to see what was what compared to stock.
I think they left them a bit long (which is fine), but trying to figure out where the main components will attach is going to be a bit tricky.
The stock from goes from 3.5 inches in stops to 5 inches... the new rails are 2x4 for the whole thing.

So, I think I have to pick a spot... say the rear spring hanger... and then attach that and then do all the work based on that location.
Not sure... still kicking around ideas.

The "level" was just there to see how off it was... pretty funny... not even close... but the drivetrain still needs to come out.
I need to finish stripping this thing all the way down to the frame and put it on the floor and measure.

If you move it ever so slightly, it goes out of whack quickly... NOTE: this still had the rear shock mount in place, but if you remove that, if you try to fit it to the rear, it doesn't fit in the front... and vice versa... not the green part is hanging over in the front past the front bumper by a good inch or so.

It looks like the side rails line up pretty well with it setting on top.
 
Looking at the pics. Think I would mark center on both frames and let that determine rail ends or at least it would show how much they built out the end(s). And give a starting point.

I did this the other day quick... and it had more on the rear than on the front from my rough measurements.
Here is a picture showing now what we said with actual measurements.

They are about 2 inches give or take off on the "center" of the old vs. the new... and if I line them up, then they don't "fit" nicely like they are sitting here.

So, that probably makes sense in a way as they welded the front together and put some bars in the rear for shipping.
So a little off the front, probably an inch or so and more like 3-4 inches in the rear.

So, thank you all for the info.
The picture of the TSM was the CJ7 one.
I found the CJ7/CJ8 one... and printed it out.

It had some measurements so I tried... and they weren't close.
The biggest issue with the picture is that this is a CJ7 picture with some scribble of an CJ8 length on it for one of the numbers.
The distance between the eye holes for the spring hangers grow with a CJ8, so you really need an actual picture of the Scrambler frame.

I used the CJ7 TSM for my actual CJ7 and the numbers were pretty much spot on.
The Scrambler however, wasn't close.

So, I started down the path of is the 4 cyl frame different? Is the Scrambler I have different? and then looked at older pictures and this was just a stock Scrambler... so at this point, I need an actual frame dimension picture specifically for a CJ8 for reference... or


I will use the old frame for reference.
Now that I have the center point of the old frame and I know that it is sitting on the frame I want... make a new "center" on the new rails, cut off the ends measure out from that point to match the old and start down the path of tacking together the frame front/rear, put the mounts on, flip and do the spring perches and such... and a ton of holes in the bottom for all the hangers, bump stops, sway bar, skid plate for the trans, engine needs and finally the front shackles (and the rear as well).

That is another whole task... right now I just need a square frame that resembles the old one from the top :)

Depending on tire size plan’s moving front steering box and axle a little can provide clearance in rear front fender… just a thought…

Well... funny you say the front... measuring last night brings up a whole other host of issues.
These rails are straight 2x4 front to back.

CJ frames start in the front at 3.5" and then go to 4 inch, almost 5 inch in the rear upwards sweep, and then 3.5" in the rear.
So, the original frame front plate and mounts all for the power steering box, as well as the shackle, etc. won't work with the extra 1/2".
It would need to be addressed when I do all that work.
It was meant to go on an OEM setup, so having larger frame rails could cause an issue.

This is why TDK have jigs for this and I am fumbling around :)

Shouldn't dimension S increase by 10" and the rest be in dimension H, which would be 13.86", assuming the overall dimesions in the TSM are correct?

S is definitely longer by 10 inches... that is correct.
The H distance is incorrect in the picture as the Scrambler has the extra piece on the end.
But yes, if you subtract 10 inches from what they have it comes close...

They tried to get away with one picture when having 2 separate picture would have been better.
Especially in the top picture... you are missing a crossmember with the extension for Scrambler only.
The picture is lacking this extra piece from the gas tank back... so that dimesion is extra, just like the 10 inches in between the spring hangers.
