Question on bed

I’m in the process of joining the CJ-8 family. I’ve been wanting one since my teenage years, I’m 27 now. My dad, father in law, stepdad have all had CJ5s and CJ7s but I’ve always been partial to the Scrambler.

The one I’m looking at, my father in law, who is a car dealer got a decent deal on, that he really only accepted because he knew I had always wanted a scrambler. He’s selling it to me for what he’s got in it. I forgot to get pictures of it but my main question for now is, the bed is sort of beat up on the inside and almost has some waves in it. Almost like a sagging floor in a couple spot. Is this common? I only got to look at the jeep for a few minutes but will inspect it thoroughly later and provide some more info and pics in another thread, since I know you guys, like me, appreciate a good picture. From what I can tell, the jeep has some rust in a few areas, but not anything worse than what you’d expect.

Also, it’s an ‘81. Had an engine swap at some point to an AMC 304. 4 speed. I’ll add some more info when I get a little more time. It’s overall pretty nice, needs a good buff/wax. Someone previously did some things to it that I personally wouldn’t have done, but I think it can be cleaned up reasonably well. He’s asking $14500 which is what he’s got in it. I’m just curious if the wore out truck bed is a common thing or if this is something that’s a telltale sign of some major work/$$ to come. Apologies for not having pictures. Someone attempted a spray-on bed liner and it looks pretty pisspoor.

Thanks, sorry for the sporadic rambling. I’m multitasking. I’ll try to provide more/better info later.

Welcome. If a dealer has 14,500 into it I would assume it isn't a POS since dealers usually give below market value when the take vehicles in.
The wavey floor is common if it has been used to haul things in the bed. Get a bunch of pictures and post them up.

Will do, and appreciate the feedback. So by having 14,500 into it, I mean he gave the guy 14,500 who apparently originally paid 16500 for it. It came from Illinois from another guy who had a lot of 9 cars that he needed to get out from under.

Yeah, at that price it must be pretty nice. The bed in these wasn't well built for hauling anything serious and so it's very common for them to be wavy like that.

Looking forward to seeing this thing.

Appreciate the input. I’ve been eyeing this forum a lot on and off. He’s gonna get it cleaned up a little before I get my hands on it and then the adventure begins. Not sure what I’ll start with first, it’s not super far off from the original set up, but I’d like to strike a fair mix of QoL while also preserving the classic side of it.

This is the only picture I’ve gotten so far. Will get some better ones and post them in a more relevant topic as soon as possible. It looks a little better in the picture than in person, but pretty close.

If this one has been posted in here before, let me know. I’d like to learn any history on it I can.

Thanks fellas.

Just not in a CJ8.
There is a guy on Facebook ebook who swears he is the original owner of a V8 CJ8. He gets kinda prissy when he is called out on it and when people ask to see proof(if he has it) that it is a factory V8. He hasn't show proof that I am aware of. Maybe he bought it new as a dealer swapped V8, which I suggested that was met with an attitude.

Yeah, I saw that, which is what made me say what I said.

I know Jeep got funky back then.

Back then, dealers were willing to do most anything if you were willing to pay. Even AMC factory did some interesting things, but they weren’t really available to the public….of course, I’m sure there was a back door/gate.

I wouldn't doubt he bought it new with a V8 - especially from dealers like Hinkle's in SC. Plenty of places did swaps before being sold to the public. It'd be like someone today saying they have a factory V8 Gladiator. Yep, there are dealerships that sell them new but the swap was done after the factory. And yep, I've interacted with a guy like that before too.
