Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Slow. Moving seems to have taken over my life lately. I had a 3 car garage before, with just the Scrambler in it. Now I have a standard 2 car garage, and all the treasures and tools I have accumulated over the years seem to have barely left room for the Scrambler, let alone have room to work. I know I'm blessed just to have a garage- I just have to get stuff sorted, put away, and get rid of the spare parts for things I don't even own anymore. On the bright side, we brought the last load of stuff from the old house last night.

In the load was the hardtop for my Scrambler.....so in the need to save room we set it on the Scrambler. Guess what? It doesn't fit!!!:banghead::angry::shrug: Seems in my quest to get the roll bar "just perfect" and allow as much room as possible, I forgot to account for the stiffening ribs which protrude 5/8" or so from the roof. It would have been a perfect fit without those ribs. I don't feel good about grinding them down, as the top also seems to have warped some from sitting on a pallet in my back yard for almost 2 years. Looks like I will have to section the top, raise the back portion behind the door about 1", lower the door frames to seal, and fill in the gaps. I had thought about making it into an Overlander clone, but I only have about 4" clearance to my garage door... we'll see what the final outcome is.

The good news is, I found a soft top somewhat close for a fair price. I just have to figure out how to get it here, as the seller doesn't want to ship. It's in Olympia, WA, and the seller said he'd drive as far south as Longview to meet me. Gotta try and arrange a relay of some sort. I actually paid him a bit more than he was asking me, just so he'd keep it for me. It's a Craigslist deal...so i won't be breathing easy until it's in my hands.

Ouch! Sounds like you have fix tho. Good luck and post up some pics! I'm worried about mine too. If it doesn't fit, I have a problem.

Thanks. Best part of the whole thing is that this has sort of "jump started" my enthusiasm, so now I can't wait to make some real progress.

Sounds like you beat me to that soft top! Been eyeballingt it on Craigs list for awhile now. I really need to get over to sisters adn see this build!

I was suprised that he still had it when I called. I still won't breath easy until Jeff has it tomorrow. You're welcome to head over this way any time...the new place has a smaller garage, but a nice guest room!

Seems like we never have enough room for our toys. But I feel so lucky. When I retired I wanted a big shop, so I built a 5,000sqft metal building with 16ft sides. I used 1500sqft of it for my home so that leaves me with a 3,500sqft garage and belive it or not I still don't have enough room.

Thes are the pics of my scrambler. I believe it is the same color as yours. 81' with 84 decals
Base coat with clear looks completely different than the original paint.
I still haven't installed the electric windows and locks though.

Nice...the color looks great. Like the console/dash too!

Soft top's here!

My friend just dropped off the Kayline top that I found on Craigslist. (Thanks Jeff for picking it up and meeting Scott midway!)

The top fabric looks close to new, and all the hardware with the exception of the bed rails is there! I paid $300 for the whole thing, including a pair of soft door uppers. They look like they are Kayline uppers...anyone need a set? I need a set of black YJ uppers- want to trade?

Can't wait to try it on, although I have to find a place to store the Hardtop first. Pics will be up when I get it installed.

Well, after last night's frustration I wasn't about to let this thing whip me. I took all the parts to work and got the geometry right. ( I have a very understanding boss...helps that I have built several bumpers for him...)Then I brought the assembly home, fitted it to my spare mock-up tranny, and welded it up. Hooked up the cable and it works! The pictures will explain what I ended up with. It works surprisingly smooth. The pivot rides on lubricated bronze bushings. The threaded rod with the small heim joints made adjustability possible. The pivot allowed me to adjust the throw ratio to match the Ford shifter throw to the Chevy arm. Pictures show the setup on my mock-up trans, it's mounted up in the Scrambler now.

Now on to the dash and console!:D

You are my hero.. I just accepted a job in Calgary Canada - so my project is going on hold again... for ANOTHER move... I have been searching for a good shifter for my 4L60E for a long time. This is a slick set up.

One day...

I built one of those hardtop carts for kate's JK hardtop on end and it's worked great two winters in a row. Dead simple and just a few pieces of 2x4, some screws and 4 casters. I bet you have what you need to do it in the garage right now. Took all of 20 minutes or so too. :D

Jjonsee- thanks for thr kind words.

Eric- I had thought about a cart, but I really need all the room I can spare in my garage, so the top has to go outside. Unfortunately, there is only a small side yard, (dirt), and no other real storage at the new place. And this garage has a lower ceiling, so I can't hang it from the roof. I'm thinking I'm going to be paying for a storage unit for my extra stuff for quite a while...or fence in some of the lawn facing the alley and making my own storage unit...

Glad to help out Randy:D

It is not usual that when you go to purchase something off Craigs List that it is in better shape than advertised. I was impressed. What do you want for the Kayline uppers?

z

btw if you need a place for the hard top I need one that I can cut down

Hey Jeff! Thanks again! Did the check get there yet?

On the Kayline uppers- can't make them work with the half hard doors I have. Looks like they will only fit on Kayline lowers. They have a different angle on the lower edge than most. You wouldn't have a set of YJ Wrangler uppers laying around, would you? I'd like to trade for a set...

Did you find your house on Google? And see the Scrambler in the driveway?

Yes I got it right away. Thanks
I hope it was as good or better than expected.

Sorry no spare uppers.

Yes I did see our house on google, but what I think you thought is z2w our Scramble is Nathan's nu2hims Jeepster :D

The Jeepster shows from the satellite view...go to "street view", I'm sure that's the Scrambler...

Zoom in as close as possible then click on the little yellow man icon...you'll see!

I was going to try and throw the uppers on EBay to try and recoup some of the soft top $$, but if you want them, I'll hold them for you, Jeff. I'm still trying to find the glove box and door for that dash panel...so many boxes!!!

DBW pedal mount

Hey there, nice build. Was wondering if you had any problems with the Drive By Wire pedal and where to attach it to. Did it mount to the firewall like the stock one did or did you fab up something to mount it to. Also any reason you didnt go with a set of headers instead of the manifolds. I am currently in the process of total frame off restoration Cj7 with a 2006 Chevy Gen 3 4.8 mounted to a Ford T-18/dana 300. Also didnt notice what brand of radiator you used.
Thanks

Thanks! I modified the DBW pedal bracket and arm, tried to get the pedal position close th stock CJ. Mounted the assy right next to the steering column. Seems to be a good position. I used the Vette manifolds because I've never met a set of headers that didn't leak, and I don't think there's any peerformance gain on our vehicles. Radiator is a Northern. Had a BeCool, liked it better but it was for a manual trans...

I'll be back on this build shortly, just about got moving done.
