Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Once again Randy, sweet build. I just can't get over how smart your build is. I just don't have any other way to explain it... if you know what I mean. I am thoroughly enjoying everything and I am a resto guy.

Thanks, guys! I'm working out the details on underhood placement. Once that's done, I get to take all the fenders ect off to repaint the inners and the firewall. Guess you'll know what color I picked then! Once that's done, it's back together and the wiring starts. I may not have the bumpers/winch/tire carrier/ect finished, but I WILL be driving this summer.

I have to resist the temptation to completely tear down and powder coat the frame to match the roll cage...

!!huh!!???

WAIT!!!!
We are supposed to DRIVE these? Crap! I knew I had something wrong... Hahaha! Go Randy!

Go big or go home....

I have spent the last week flexing, figuring and otherwise scratching my head until it's sore. I built my shock towers and ordered my front Edelbrock Reservoir shocks with the intention of using Bushwacker cutout flares, or GenRight tube fenders. Those options limited my up travel and bump stop placement. But with the Metalcloak fenders installed, I now have more potential up travel available. Long story short, my original shocks topped out with more droop possible. I had the right front 26" off the ground, the left front still touching and the rear still was hardly flexed, and the shackles weren't at their max angles either. So, I cut off my shock towers, and ordered some huge (compared to stock) Edelbrock Reservoir 12.6" travel shocks. That should do the trick! Going to bend up some taller hoops, and probably try and make a removable cross brace over the engine, if I can find the room.

I also got both battery boxes mounted. One on the left, one on the right. Symmetrical, just like I like it!

No pics, camera battery is charging so I'll post some up later.

I'll be selling the original set of Edelbrock IAS remote reservoir shocks. They should be perfect for a 2.5" lift. 8.4" travel, 22.74 extended, 14.35 collapsed. They're part number 63901. New in box...$150.00 for the pair plus shipping.

Battery box pics for those interested (Eric)

Really like the battery box. I need to get me one of those...

$36 and change from Ballistic...there's a 10% discount if you enter "Pirate" and supposedly this week only there's a special discount if you enter "KOH". Don't know what it is, but I'll probably find out...I'm diggin' their trail grille (Barbecue, that is! )

"KOH" will give you 15% off till Feb 14th. ;)

Crap. New shocks showed up today...1 with regualr valving, 1 with soft valving. Called Summit, those were the last two they had. Asked if they could order 1, they stated Edelbrock was no longer producing them. I found another but at almost twice the price! The search continues....

nice... thats dumb of them...

what are you looking at now? I have been leaning towards Bilsteins with the remote res. but they are a little $$$.

I looked at the Bilstein 7100's...nice shocks, but that would require changing the rears also... If I ever have any issues with the Edelbrocks, I'll probably get the 7100's for replacements. The Fox shocks also looked like a good option- heavier rod like the Edelbrocks.

I found another one of the 12.6" travel shocks, and also a pair of the 11" travel shocks. Probably just buy the one 12.6 and call it good.

No one has expressed any interest in the pair of 8.5" travel res shocks, I might just end up putting them on the back. It would look cool at least...

Well, the shocks I thought I found last night were not available when I called today AARGH! So, I called Edelbrock. Got a very helpful employee on the phone who stated they had several of my shocks in stock, and that they were selling them through Summit! I explained Summit's mix up and that they couldn't get me another, he asked me to try again and then call him direct if they couldn't help. Long story short- Summit found another shock and is shipping it out. Cool.

So, here's the pics. They might be a little overkill (OK, a LOT of overkill), but that's how I like it.

Here's a pic that will give you an idea of how long they are. I'll be building new hoops this weekend if nothing else interferes. Plus a brace over the top of the engine, hoop to hoop.

Got the A/C condenser too...

Thanks, Guys!

I did get the hoops bent up this morning, but then ended up taking my wife into town for lunch and shopping. So if all goes well tomorrow I'll have some installed pictures by the evening!

I know you're out there slaving away and taking pictures to post. After that it's time for  with a nice Rogue :D

You were right, Eric! I got the hoops installed along with a removable cross brace over the engine. Right now it's Fat Tire Amber Ale

At this point I was so focused on the job at hand that I stopped taking in-process pics...so the finished product will have to do.

Hoops installed-

Then I cut a neat hole through the inner fender for the engine hoop to pass through. Removing the driver's inner fender was a bear with the stub welded in...

Finished bracing, shock temporarily installed-

Brace fit perfectly over the engine-

Pass side-

Driver's side. The cross brace uses some trick tube joints that make it easily removable, but rock solid when installed.

Now my back has to recover, then it's on cooling vents in the fenders, and some painting.

so these bolt to the frame? through bolt? they look too short to go through the frame. I'm curious because i have to do the same thing to my Scrambler soon. what size tube (diameter & thickness) did you use?

looks good! I like it!!! :D
