Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Dash is looking killer. I must be in the minority and really don't care for the fenders. Sure looks like you need to bump up the tire size now though ;)

So do you just park in safer parts of town than me? Or is there and antitheft theory built into the huge nav/tv screen?

KK

The Nav unit has a code so if it is stolen it's useless...probably be too late to save my dash though. I'm thinking through some kind of locking bar secures the stereo... a extended button head bolt in the top middle position, an eye bolt at the bottom...a 3/16" plate that hooks over the top bolt, and then locked to the bottom eye. I'll post up when I get to that point. I also have a good bud at a high end stereo shop, he's going to outfit me with the latest alarm gear.

Eric- first time I saw these fenders, I wasn't sure. Then I saw some painted pics on a red CJ7, and fell in love. Definitely not a retro or period correct look, they are more modern and JKish if anything. They will probably end up being one of the more expensive additions... I'll run the 35"s for now, but I can see 37" or bigger in the future. That means I'll finally have to build the HP D60 rear I've been toying with, or maybe even a Fab9. I've been questioning the strength of the locked HD20 rear for some time now, with bigger tires I think I'll end up toasting it.

The cool thing is, that clearance over the fenders is with a RE 4.5 lift, nothing else.

Maybe this will help out in the aesthetics department... I'm planning on painting the fender body to match the main body color, and then powder coat the removable flare in either textured black or maybe the same finish as my roll cage.

I had a cabin in Alaska with a big bear claw trap mounted around the door handle... Even gave me the willies opening the door. Never had to lock that place...

Mount something like that on your dash. Always thought it would be fun to set up an auto door lock feature and a count down timer with a camera on the dash so I could watch vandles do laps inside the windows before a big bang flag and confetti popped inside the car.

THE FENDERS ARE COOL. I LIKE THE WAY THE FLARES COME OFF FOR TRAIL RIDING.

Fenders are just too much like crawler/buggy pieces to look right on a CJ for me and the lines are all wrong. That said, I love the space for larger tires and the detachable flare. I'm like the idea of the flare matched to the roll cage

If you think the fenders are too buggy/crawler...wait until you see the bumper/tire carrier!

I wanted it to have an "extreme" look to it...mission accomplished.

I think the powdercoating to match will be slick, too.

Thanks for the compliment, Charlie!

Did some work on the right dash panel today, got "the plan" figured out. Ordered a way-too-expensive cupholder, and made a storage pocket in the blank area. Pics forthcoming...the cupholder is a few days out.

All kiding a side looks great i hope mine looks half as good when done.

Wrench on.

I did have it over 100 back when the 350 was in there... it was amazingly stable. I know the new drivetrain is easily capable of 120, but who knows how stable the new suspension is. I guarantee, if it feels good, I'll give it a shot.

Once a year they close down the little airstrip here and run drag races. Side by side even. Might have to see where I stand.

Thanks for the compliment.

Awesome Metalcloaks! Did you get Metalcloaks for the rear too? Or are you going to keep it stock in the rear?

I'll be doing Metalcloaks in the rear too. Have to decide on the 4.5" or the 6". Since my rear axle is about 2" narrower, I'll probably go with the 4.5" ones. They're planning on making the full corners for the Scrambler, Matson said he'd be wanting me to get him measurements when they're ready to start building them.

Great build.
I ran across an old post (10/09) of yours looking for ideas on tailgate latches. I didn't see anything in the build, so have you seen this:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/lockable-cj-tailgate-hardtop-duster-owners-1007833/

IMO the latches would look better on the tub, but not sure if they would allow clearance for the tailgate to open and close.

HTH

(BTW, I was searching for the purpose of the extra set of holes directly above the tailgate hinge bolt holes in the tub, anyone have a clue.)

Thanks for the link. Those latches look cool.

I have no idea what the extra set of holes on the tailgate lower is for.

I am planning on finishing up the right dash panel tomorrow (finally). I'll post up pics. Got a bunch of little stuff and two battery holsers from Ballistic Fabrication, they have some great prices. And ordered a dual diaphragm brake booster setup, waiting on it's arrival. Also finally got a good garage heater and some lighting, so it's time to get back to work.

Finally some more progress...

Seems like forever since I've done anything...I could make a thousand excuses, but aside from bad lighting and poor heat (both resolved), I only have one- since we've settled in our new place, and also since for the first time in 25 years the wife and I have the house to ourselves, Carol and I have been enjoying just hanging out together. But even she admits I need to refocus on getting this on the road. Something about getting back to work on her VW...

So...I finally finished the passenger side dash panel. It still looks a little awkward to me, but I'll write that off to being too much of a perfectionist. There's a large glove box, two 12V power outlets, and the A/C vent and tweeter. Pics...

I still need to finish the filler under the steering wheel and install the A/C controls.

I also purchased some functional "Bling" for under the hood. An 8" dual diaphragm power brake setup, and a pair of Ballistic battery boxes. I'm going to split the dual batteries and have one on each side. Here's a preview...

The joystick is a surplus aircraft part that I have been carrying around since I was 18. Got it at Art's Surplus in Sepulveda, CA. It was one of the coolest shops, they parted out airplanes and sold the individual components. Many of my early custom touches relied heavily on switches and other gizmos scrounged from their bins. Sort of Mad Max meets Star Wars. But this joystick I was saving for something special. (I wish I knew what it was out of- anyone?)

OK, you asked what it was for, not the history. I am going to be using it for an in-cab control for the winches. It moves front to back, and reverses polarity along with performing standard switch functions. There will be a winch select switch, along with a safety switch for power. I'll move the joystick closer to the center, and put rack handles on the outside edges to serve as switch guards.

Fender well fitting...

Temporarily bolted up my fender wells to see how everything fit. WOW...it's tight under there. I had originally planned to put one battery on each side, I might have to move them both to the passenger side. Between the booster, battery, and fuse box, there's no room left on the driver's side! I also got the engine covers test fit...my Darth Vader Vortec!:D

I do have to compliment Metalcloak- the fender wells fit perfectly and everything lines up on the first try!

Looks great:thumbsup: Compared to my 258, that is a whole lot of motor squeezed between the front fenders, both power wise and physical size:D:D:D:thumbsup::thumbsup:
