Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

I've been using Seafoam for many years and think it is the best fuel system cleaner ever. It also helps remove any carbon deposits on the pistons and heads. I use it in everything, diesel or gas, small or large.

Randy- I am going to try it without a CV for now...it's only 3" shorter than my old driveline, and the amount of lift is about the same. The picture makes it look a lot worse than it really is. If it gives me the shakes I'll do a CV and keep this one as a trail spare.

I am still looking for options on painters...I may still attempt it myself, but that's a last resort.

ZR- I've heard that SeaFoam is the "stuff". Never tried it before, but my new job stocks it so I brought a can home.

Got my brake system filled and bled today, and got the pedal height adjusted. I also got the Metalcloak fenders modified so they are a bolt on without a backing plate. I'll post pics tomorrow- just got home from 4th fireworks and I'm bushed.

OK, here's the photo essay on the rear Metalcloak fenders. I went with the 6" flare to match the front, but I think 4" might have looked a bit better. I really need 37"s now...

The Metalcloaks are extremely well made and fit the base plates perfectly. Here you can see the baseplates clamped to the body and the fender sitting below.

As you can see the baseplates are designed for a stock CJ opening, which appears to be taller and narrower than the Scrambler. Mounting the fender with the baseplates aligned to the bottom of the body left the flare too high, IMHO, and because of the inner fender design, left a lot of unusable space.

This would be great if you cut out your inner fenders and needed the room for huge tires. Not part of my plans.

So, I continued looking for the best option. I found the position where I liked the looks and the fit:

2444541330041433204S600x600Q85.jpg

That left me with a problem. There would be a LOT of the base plate that I would have to remove, and how do I fill the 5/16" gap caused by the raised body lip? Weld in a filler to the back of the plate, leaving 2 seams? Then I had an idea...do I really need the plate? I guess not!

Much better:

But, I still have that gap from the raised lip to deal with.

2414909090041433204S600x600Q85.jpg

So, I cut off the mounting tabs:

Welded them back on with a 5/16" setback:

So, with that problem solved, It's time to remove the fenders and get them powder coated to match the cage. I still have to fabricate some bracing for the body lip where the fenders bolt through, and for the bottom mounts that will some day tie into rocker guards. But for right now, it's time for a little showing off in the sun!

Tonight I was able to install the last A/C hose and put the left head lamp back in. She's getting close!!!

The flares, fenders, and battery boxes went to powder coat today. Brian at Armordillo (Powdercoating shop) gave me another smoking deal. Wish I could powdercoat the whole thing...it would be cheaper than paint for sure. They should be ready Fri or Mon. Of course, I'm hoping Fri, she's getting closer!!!

Quick question. I have been following your build. Im currently in the process of a 4.8 install into a CJ and your engine mount advice was a lot of help. I too got the MORE mounts and bough some adapter plates that moved the motor back an inch and bolts to the four bolt engine block. One thing that has me concerned. Does your front diff get close to your oil pan on full compression. I did put the Camero pan on compared to your truck pan. Im also using a passenger drop dana 44 from a 79 wagoneer and my tranny is a Ford T-18/Dana 300 setup. I might have to use some larger bump stops. hmmm

I forgot how good you can weld! Dang! Looks like some precision robot threw down those beads. NICE!!!!

Thanks, Gary!

Johken- I fully flexed mine (well I think fully- had the one front wheel sitting 30 inches in the air- and it was close but nothing hit. I was concerned about my high-steer linkage hitting so I put on 4" bump stops. I think you'll be ok, just be sure and flex it out yourself first.

Picked up my powdercoated parts today. Wow...they look great! Can't wait to get them installed, hopefully after camping this weekend.

Here's a couple pics, you really can't see the finish that well- lighting was bad.

Looking good... Everytime I see this post at the top of the build thread and your
name showing who posted last. I'm looking for that "it's running" and here
is the video! LOL. and if a bunch of people make comments I'm backing reading
the thread like I might have missed it! You look like it is " so very close to running/ driving!"
everything thing looks really good. Ps. If I missed it in the thread that it is already running/
driving sorry. To much Internet it not good for the mind.LOL

I am so close. I have to finish the A/C compressor connector, mount the O2 sensor wires, prelube the engine and clean the injectors. And, put the fenders back on. There are other things that will need to be finalized before I can really drive it any distance, like the evap canister, the pitman arm, and wiring the console, but that can wait. I'm really hoping for next weekend to post that video.

Got back from camping with a little "Scrambler" time left, so I got my tail in gear and got the newly powdercoated stuff mounted. It looks AWESOME! :woot:The pictures don't so it justice at all. Only one BIG problem...the copper color looks like crap next to the silver/black powdercoat.:banghead: I was afraid of that, but was really hoping otherwise. My wife, the design star, thinks Black would look best, although she hates black vehicles. White and Silver were suggested also. AAAARGH! I thought I had the color nailed, at least. Really doesn't matter, can't afford paint right now anyways.

Here's the pics of the powdercoated goodness...

I think your right, I really like the copper but thats because it's the color of mine. I vote for silver on yours.
Brown Copper Metalic would still look good

I dont' hate it as is, but you're right, the copper doesn't really mesh with the hammertone gun-metal you've got going there..

considering that you've got all that metallic trim plus the brushed look of those wheels, perhaps a medium plain or metallic blue?

If you go with white, there's a late model FJ Cruiser in my neighborhood that has a really nice slightly off-white color to it, the factory name for it is "Iceberg", it has kind of an idustrial look to it, perhaps like a refrigerator (?), but as soon as I saw it, I thought it would make a nice Jeep white

this is not the neighborhood truck, but one I pulled off a Google Image search:

studio shot makes it look a little plain-whitish, but you get the ideal:

I think that I have to agree with Bushmaster6, I think that silver trim would look good with a bright blue body.
