Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Thanks, Guys! The plan for the weekend is to finish the Dynamat and then recoat the liner in the tub, and get the cage installed! My wife is out of town, so I'll be able to get a lot accomplished.

Oh...that's not my trailer- I borrowed it.:D The cage was about 1" too wide to fit comfortably in my trailer.

You should see the bottom!

Whew...what a weekend. Got the holes in the bed rails welded up, 14 per side! I put 1/8" angle on the underside, they are plenty strong now, and I can just tap the rail for the soft top hardware, if I need to.

Then I applied the rest of the Dynamat. Both bedsides are fully covered now. What a difference it makes- now when you tap the side it makes a thud instead of resonating. Should be quieter now!

I then built a stiffener for the cowl- since I'm not using a factory style dash, there is no support for the cowl under the defroster vents. Some 3/16 strap drilled for countersunk screws did the trick.

Then, the Herculiner. I had 2 coats, but decided to add another 2 or so, and do the sides too. So...another gallon and it's thick. Let me tell you, those Xylene fumes give you a little buzz and a big headache! But I'm all recovered today, and here's the pics!

Next weekend, the cage goes back in!

Nice thick liner and no holes in the rails!

wow that cage turned out great Randy, I am now terminaly bummed that I didn't do mine that way, pooh! I see mine coming out next fall and getting redone......... ugh!

question on the dynamat, if you were doing the bulkhead, would it mold around the ribs or convolutions in the bulkhead? or would it need to be done as slats glued on individually? What adhesive did you use? and it looks like you herculinered over it, no issue with adhesion from either interface? liner didn't melt the dynamat?

Super looking job amigo, I'm so looking forward to seeing it done and on the road. FWIW on the color, I like the copper, like the blue but might opt for the metallic copper/orange that was a dodge and now a chevy color. The Colorado Assn of 4 wdc did a reffle scrambler in that color a couple years ago and wow did it look good....

I missed the cage pics while on vacation... that looks incredible man!!

I SO want to find a tub to fix up and swap on mine now... of course I could never do work this nice. I love the idea of bedliner over dynamat...

Thanks, guys! I actually used Scosche Accumat in the back, and I am very satisfied with the results. It comes in a flat sheet instead of a roll and goes on much easier because of it. I scuffed it with a Scotchbrite pad and then wiped it down with Xylene. Rolled on the liner, the spray gun was too messy. The liner stuck well, although it took 2 coats to get the same coverage as 1 coat on steel. I don't think much of anything would cause the mat to melt.

The Dynamat and Accumat both are self adhesive, the butyl material sticks well to a smooth clean surface. On a bulkhead single large sheets should work, the mat stretches and shrinks some and will conform around the ridges.

I'm still leaning towards the copper color...

Cage is in!

I reinstalled the cage this weekend. It actually went in easier than it came out! It helped that it was actually warm and sunny! I made a boom extension for the cherrypicker, and made good use of the threaded tab which is hidden under the dome lamp top cover. I screwed a 1/2" eye bolt in and lifted from there. Draped the tub with towels and in she goes! It was a 1 man job, with the exception of my wife helping steady the picker. Here's a bunch of pics...

There's a new color in competition for the build. After looking at the cage against the copper color out in the sunlight it looks sort of blah. Even against the new color. My wife, who had been the biggest champion of the Copper color, said it looked too subdued. I had mentioned the blue in an earlier post, but I still wasn't 100% sold. I like blue but every blue vehicle I owned before I tired of the color. Yellow...maybe. I loved the Yellow Unlimited, but the cage would look better against something a bit darker, and metallic. Then my son-in-law rode up on his new mountain bike. It was a metallic green, sort of like Jeep Rescue Green but without the yellow tinge. I like! So did everyone else. The closest color I can think of is the Honda Element Green. I know, green is like yellow...love it or hate it. I happen to love it, I think Stouttrout has one of the best looking paint combos here. Besides, metallic Green is a "Jeepy" color, sort of olive drab with zing!:D

Here's a pic of the bike color close up, this doesn't do it justice but you get the idea...

I like the silver and copper... green is a really tricky color in my book, depends as much on the vehicle's lines as it does on the actual green color you use. Different cars with the same green can make the green look great/bad.

You're right about it being a Scrambler color though, so I'd bet you'd be in good shape. trout's is definitely a looker

Ain't that the truth! My son and I went to the gun show today, and I kept a look out for greens, or any other cool colors. While eating lunch at the local brew pub, a green Element and a blue Saleen Mustang pulled in side by side. Aside from the cool factor...the blue looked so much "hotter" than the green. The green looked real plain next to that blue. Then a Yellow Unlimited pulled up....

I'm so confused....

At least i've got time...

Hey Randy, I've been following your rebuild and your doing some great work, really amd impressed with the roll cage. It looks like we both started with the copper brown. My '81 still has the stock engine and drive train so I'm putting it back as close to stock as I can, 258 with 4 speed. Just put he primed tub back on the frame today. I also painted the firewall before installation. The new paint hardly looks like the old warn paint. Check out some of my pictures, I should be posting more real soon. Keep up the great work you've been doing
Dennis

Dynamat pics?

Randy, that cage is awesome, especially all the details you worked with the gussets to smooth them out.. looks totally professional.. wanna make another one? :D

do you have any more pics of your dynamat install? When you wrote "both sides", did you mean just of the firewall or of the entire tub? Did you leave holes for the drain plugs? Your herculiner looks like it's just painted on the tub itself.. did the dynamat conform to all those grooves and seams that well?

I've seen alot of write ups on this over at ih8mud for the TLC lovers, but haven't seen much about it in the Jeep community, particuarly for a vehicle that isn't "enclosed".. I'm wondering how effective it is with road noise because the stereo I just put in my CJ7 is nearly useless above 35mph (and my 7 has no carpet, insulation, or anything, so it's just herculined steel between me and the road/drivetrain/tires)..

Bushmaster, let me first say I'm impressed with your thread and all the pictures! A+ !
On the Dynamat install- I did the firewall and full cowl, and under both doors, and both of the bedsides. It makes a huge difference in the resonation when you knock on the panels. I did not do the floors. I was actually considering it, but I already had 2 coats of Herculiner down form a couple years back and knew there was no way it would stick. I know you could get the mat to follow all the contours of the floor/bed it you had bare metal. I was also concerned about how the Dynamat would hold up underfoot, as a test I stuck a scrap to the garage floor by the door...lets just say it didn't pass the traffic test. It stuck ok...but deformed/shifted around. My plan for the floor is a heavyweight bed mat for the back flat surface, and one of the molded rubber/nylon floor covering kits for the front. There's 4 coats of Herc in there now, and on the underside there's several coats of professional undercoating/deadener. I'm also going to insulate the full length hardtop. I never had a real problem hearing the stereo even before, just hearing in general after driving a while!:D I have a Kenwood double-din DVD/Nav unit for the dash, front JBL separates, rear JBL 6X9's, a 10" sub, and 2 healthy 4 channel amps. Sorta like sitting in front of the speaker towers at a concert. It sounds great at low volumes too. A full hardtop with insulation makes a world of difference.

Build another cage? Maybe some day...first priority is getting this thing going, and enjoying camping/trail running, ect again. It's been too many years with some sort of build hanging over my head.

zr10054- looking forward to seeing the pics. My firewall looked more like a burnt orange metallic. Sort of like the one posted in bushmaster's thread. I just don't know how that would look with the cage color.

I also have the Kenwood GPS/Nav for mine but because I installed a Classic Air AC system I may not have enough room to install it unless I mount it below the stock dash.
Here are some pics as of today. Tomorrow I install the wheel with the Goodyears mounted.

Also, I'm looking for a set of stock Jeep center caps for my wheels, If anyone can help me with this.

Looks good!

I mounted my AC system to the far right...gave up glove box room but saved room for the stereo.

Made a little more progress. Got the Centerlines polished up (at least as good as I have the patience for:rolleyes:) and the KM2's mounted up. I'm really pleased with the look. The Centeline offset puts the centerline of the tire exactly at the body side panel in the rear.

Polished up-

I mounted the driver's seat, the column, the electronic throttle pedal, and the center console lock box. Climbed up to see how the view was:D and it sure felt good to be sitting in the driver's seat again. Best part, everything fits perfectly! Next will be the dash and the console/shifter.

So comfortable-

I think I can see then light at the end of the tunnel!

woww does that look good.. the stance, the new meats, the cage, the seats, the tub lining.. must be gratifying to see it coming together..

will that thing fit coming out from yoru garage? looks tall!!

Hey Randy, It's looking real good. Love the stance. Did you decide on a color yet? I really like it the way it is or at least back to the same copper color for what it is worth. When I can't decide I always go with what was stock. Although my curent build a 1979 cj7 was factory bordeax metallic, which I hate. Any idea when you plan to fire her up? Wish I could find the deals on 6 lug wheels like you have....Nice!!!

Thanks! It clears the garage with the top off, I don't know about with the top on...

dsgraf- I have decided to stick with the copper color, albeit a little "brighter' mix. I fully intend to be driving her by Summer, one way or another. I might have to wait on paint, maybe even the custom bumpers, but I WILL be driving by summer. I'm running out of spare cars anyways...the Trooper died 2 weeks ago, my son-in-law sold the spare Cherokee I was driving, and it looks like my '53 will be sold in 3 weeks. That leaves just 2 vehicles at my place- I haven't had that few in years!
