Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

My neighbor brought me a growler of John John Dead Guy, straight form Rogue brewing. It was full here (That's yesterday) but it's empty now! John John dead Guy is a brewers special, it's Dead Guy ale aged in whiskey barrels! Boy is it tasty!

Had to celebrate a bit, good news- I start a new job Monday. I will be working the counter at the local parts house, it's 4 blocks from my house. The pay isn't great, but there are benefits, and the commute rules! Plus it's M-F 7:30-4:30.

Randy, that sounds like some seriously good beer. I will have to remember to look for it if we get up that way this fall on vacation. Oh, and the Scrambler is looking seriously good too.

I've been looking through your posts, and one thing is VERY apparent to me: I need to come up to Oregon for some welding lessons! DAMN nice welds!!!!

And a nice Scrambler!

Thanks, Gary. Would you believe I mostly taught myself? The only real training I had was watching a professional do some work on my Willys frame years ago...bought a wire feed and went from there. I'm confident in the strength, I've done "destructive testing" and been happy with the results- the base metal fails before the welds do.

Reading about your AC makes me glad I bought the vintage air unit, It's been flawless now for a year. the air out of the vents is 37 degrees. That sure comes in handy here in Louisiana when we've had at least 45 days so far over 95. I love the looks of the billet alum vents but with our humidity they condensate a lot. I guess I should have gone with plastic but I can live with these.

Randy your build is awesome.

Well, I'm going to tuck my tail between my legs and admit defeat to another deadline. I could have made the Fourth if I was still not working...but even putting an hour or two in after work each night still leaves me short of the goal.

On the positive side, the Metalcloak rear fenders came in today. The fenders themselves look great, but the mounting plates will take some fabrication. The raised lip around the stock rear wheel opening causes all the problems...not insurmountable but far from a bolt on. It will take more than cutting to get these babies to sit right.

I'll post up pics as progress is made.

I feel for you Randy, so many of my deadlines have come and gone on my build I don't even think about having deadlines anymore. But, I can see how frustrated you could get, especially being soooo close to being done. Just try to have a nice weekend, spend time with the family, reflect on what the Fourth of July really means to all of us, and above all just enjoy yourself. All of us here really admire the work that you have done so far and really respect your talent and devotion to building a really great Scrambler. Happy 4th.

I DITTO that Randy. It will all be worth the effort and you have a build to be proud of.

Same here Randy, have a great weekend and know you're building a rig that has all of us

Thanks for the words of encouragement, guys. I have spent minimal time on her so far this weekend...played with the Metalcloak rear fenders, (I'll post pics later, several options for mounting), and put in some fluids. Still brainstorming on building a pre-luber for the 5.3.

But, spent a lot of good time with the family- same for today and tomorrow. Lots of yard work-made the wife happy- installed a screen door at my kids house, took the wife out for a nice dinner...you get the idea. It's all good, and the Scrambler WILL run soon.

no need to brainstorm... problem solved. been running this on my CJ-7 for 10 years. (just have to install it in my CJ-8) just use a shut off valve. close valve before you shut engine down (keeps pressure in accumulator) before you start engine, open valve. You'll actually have oil pressure when you turn the engine over.

I saw that. Don't know if I have that much room left....I will probably build something out of an old refrigerant tank for a one-time use, I just have to find one. This engine has been sitting for 2+ years, and i'd just feel better if I knew there was oil on the bearings when I first crank her over. I still have to pull the injectors and give them the SeaFoam treatment.

Are you just going to soak them in SeaFoam or put it in the fuel rail? Mine are out now, I don't have the intake, and was wondering how to clean them.

room? I mounted my accumulator beside the driver's seat...

you cant prelube the engine? pull distributor and spin oil pump? (i know it doesnt have a distributor, but cant you spin the pump some how?)

I have read that soaking the tips and then running some of the SeaFoam through each injector does the trick.

I have that link saved to the CarCraft preluber. I'm thinking a combo of their fittings with air pressure to "inject" the oil will do the trick.

Randy: You're gonna need a CV joint in there. Too much angle to run smootly at speed. Also as you load and unload the Jeep the angles will change and the thing will vibrate. A CV will make it run smooth nomatter what. The one for my yellow jeep is at 17* and has about 1" of tube 14-15" long and runs at 4000 rpms at 70 mph, never buzzes or wobbles. Coast Driveline....

Don't feel bad about the $2100 paint job. My "Buddy" wants $5K to do the "on the side" job for me. As a result it is going to be painted by ME! for the cost of the paint. I painted the Yellow one and it is not as hard as they would have you believe.

Randy
