Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

your right shaft is twisted because when your diff is unlocked power naturally goes to the right side.

You'll be happy with the 60. There are tons in scrap yards and even more aftermarket support.

It was actually the left shaft that I had to replace- the shorter (by 2"). The right shaft looked fine. The twisted shaft was also the one that was a bit bent, I'm wondering if that axle missed heat treating or something.

I might have thought through how it got twisted. We live in a small town with the highway going through the middle. When there's a lot of traffic, crossing the highway becomes an exercise in bravery, stupidity, or both. Right turns are no problem- but a left turn often requires precise timing and some fast acceleration. I know many times on left turns I'll punch it, leading to a significant "chirp" from the left rear tire. Slip then sudden grip. I'll bet that's how it happened.

Doesn't matter...I'm moving on to bigger and beefier anyways.

well that blows my theory out of the water... lol

4l60e

Hey Randy, How do you like the 4L60E tranny in your jeep? My Hummer has a 4L80E in it

No complaints on the transmission, other than what seems to be excessive lag when shifting between drive and reverse. Had it checked and everything's per spec. I am really happy with the ratios and the feel. I do know the 4L60E is not the world's strongest transmission, and after my axle "issue" that worries me a bit. I have another 4L60E in reserve just in case.

As much as I love my leaf springs, I think you are going to have problems with the leafs in the rear of your Scrambler. My buddy has a YJ with an LT1, turbo 350, 14 bolt rear, and 37" crawlers. Even before we put the V8 in, he was destroying rear leaf packs (Wagoneer packs). The V8, coupled with a heavy foot, resulted in new leaf spring packs after every off road trip. We linked his rear, and have had no issues:thumbsup:

Just my :twocents:, and I am a big leaf spring supporter, but I think you have too much power, which is a good problem to have:drool:

Randy sorry to hear you stripped your rear axle. I went through this same dilemma (as far as rear axle consideration) with the wifes cj8. I was trying to save weight and cost. I was not looking to spend all my money on a d60 for the rear and looked at my options. I'm not sure what wms you have. but I got a factory 9" out of an early bronco for next to nothing used (61" wms-wms). And as I'm sure you already know there are just as many ford 9" parts as dana 60 parts. and the ford 9" is just as strong as the d60 and lighter. If I had to redo my axle choice in my cj7 I would have picked the ford 9" instead of the d60 do to over all size and weight... just my 2 cents... (ps. I like your axle mover) I wouldn't worry about the transmission. unless: 1. it has a ton of miles on it and needed rebuilding before you put it in the jeep, or 2. you have increased the hp on the motor pass the transmissions capacity. otherwise the 4l60e will hold.

military wrap springs... they will be fine. ;)

Hey Drew- I was really leaning towards the 9" until I researched the ARB. I want to go with 35 spline axles, and the 35Spline ARB has some less than stellar reviews. I want to stay with a selectable locker with the snow and all...so the D60 was the next choice. I'm not happy with the weight either. I haven't started building the new axle yet, so until the first dollar is spent, nothing's set in stone.

As far as the suspension is concerned, I'm leaving it as is for the immediate future- hopefully the RE springs will hold up.

I want to have mine hydro-dipped to look like carbon fiber...some day...

Just got my covers today. Any idea what the part number is for whatever the bracket is that holds the back of the top cover? I also have to get different rocker covers since mine dont have the mounts for the side covers.

I haven't researched the center cover pivot bracket. Mine was broken, but the one screw up front seems to be holding it all together just fine. I thought they all had the bosses for the covers. That's what I get for thinking.

I actually worked a bit on mine today!!! I got the center console shifter cover finished, and started mounting my rock lights. I'll post up some pics soon- just got a new camera and I'm still figuring it out...

At dealer right now. I will post the part number and cost once i get it. :)

Sent from my Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator

heres what I ordered.
The retainer comes in next week.
Should work since the pic on the computer was the same cover.
You need PN 12561510 which is the retainer itself.
PN 12559120 is for clips or something that is included with the retainer and isnt needed (according to description on computer)
PN 11514623 is the part number for the bolts.

now I gotta find some valve covers with the right mounting bosses on them. :banghead:

Thanks! I'll have to get that ordered.

So the idea is to make an American V8 look like the motor on Akira's motorcycle? Anime anyone? heehee.

I was going for the "Darth Vader" look.

So...finally got back to working on this a little. The console has been little more than a frame for over a year... I skinned it with steel, carpeted it, made a top cover for the switches...I think it looks good. The hardest part was using one piece of carpet so there are no seams.

I was contemplating aluminum for the top panel, but i laid a piece in there and the reflection is a killer...so black it is.

I also gave the paint a little loving, and took her out to the forest for a photo shoot...

That is the most impressive dash I have seen in a CJ. Really like the console also. Paint looks great among the pines. Kudos!

You know... Every time I look at yours, MINE knows it and hates me for a week!
The carpet looks great but why didn't you bed line it also? While I don't see you blasting away with a pressure washer near that monster radio thing... seems like it would have blended in a little more? Just curious. :)
