Spankrjs' 1984 Long Term Project

it's not cheating, anything that gets it back in there and back on the road!!!

cb

Hopefully going the "long block" route will get this one back and running faster then rebuilding the old block and heads, it was less expensive this way:crazy::cheers:

Which part number? 12530283 or 12530282?

I used Summit Part #NAL-12568758, which is GM Part #12568758. This is a direct replacement TBI 350 long block, for 87-95 GM trucks with engine code "K". These engines have the "not so hot" heads and camshafts.

The numbers you referenced appear to be the "Vortec" series of 350 engines, which have better heads and cams. I could have put my TBI stuff on one of these engines, maybe, but it would take a custom computer chip, and other modifications.

Since all my TBI stuff is new, and I already have all the wiring/plumbing completed for the TBI set up, I decided to stick with what I have. I was happy with the TBI engines performance, a new engine running on all 8 cylinders should be great:smokin: Not as powerful as a Vortec/LT1/LS engine, but for stock/slightly modified axles, more then enough power, well, for now anyway:crazy::crazy:

Ya I missed the view of heads out of crate. Those are still good engines, hope the install goes smooth.

No problem:thumbsup:

I was happy with the performance of my "6 cylinder" 350, so one firing on all 8 cylinders should be an improvement:rotfl:

I have been busy the last week/weekend cleaning parts, and prepping parts for paint. Here are a few pictures.

I cleaned up all the nuts and bolts, trying to keep them organized. I have been repainting some of them, depending on where they go. I still need to clean the throttle body, maybe carefully strip the black paint off the EGR, not much I can do with the alternator.

I stripped the black paint off the intake manifold, it looked like junk, so I sprayed it with some engine paint. Looks better, a little too "blingy", but most of it will be hidden once its installed.

I cleaned all these brackets up, and they looked great. But, after 2 days, they started growing the "white fuzz". So, I cleaned them thoroughly, again, primed them with self etching primer, then hit them with some engine paint. I think they look good.

Painted the "new" water pump. This thing was only a couple of months old, but it came unpainted, so it rusted. I hit it with some engine paint, I also painted a few other miscellaneous pieces black.

IMG_20150518_173206854_zpsu33wqix4-1.jpg

I also cleaned all the hoses/wires/electrical doo-hickeys. This picture shows some of them. I would normally replace all this stuff, but its all 2 years/5000 miles or less.

Once I get the intake installed, all the other engine parts will pile on pretty quick. I should have the engine back together soon, but I still need to:

1) Sand blast/paint the exhaust manifolds
2) Sand blast/paint the steering shaft
3) Change/fix the leaking master cylinder
4) Prime/paint the DS inner fender
5) Install new transmission cooler lines/rework my mess

And a bunch of other stuff.

That's it for now:wave:

Isn't it amazing how much time it takes to do such a small part of the cj8. Coming along, looks good:headbang:

Yep, always is LOL:crazy::thumbsup:

The "engine" swap was fast, all the other stuff..........................................................

Hoping to have it driving before June:popcorn::popcorn:

Built a new PS pressure line today, ordered some transmission cooler metal lines yesterday , just need to clean/paint the manifolds/fender(s)/steering shaft, and I should have everything I need to finish it up:thumbsup: And some more cleaning, damn OCD:angry::angry:

Slowly but surely:smokin:

Intake is bolted on, all of the front accessory brackets bolted up. Waiting on some just painted bolts to dry, just cleaned pulley/fan to dry, and I can finish up all of the front accessory stuff.

I "should" be able to get all of the engine stuff installed this weekend:fingerscrossed: I need to start working on my inner fender repainting stuff this weekend, and get my exhaust manifolds blasted/painted, get the steering shaft blasted/painted, install a new master cylinder, and get the rest of the exhaust pipe cleaned up.

Appreciate it Toby:cheers:

I have been so busy, did you get your 700R4 issues resolved:fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

Worked two days on the Scrambler this past weekend, got a pretty good amount of work complete:

IMG_20150525_165316990_zpsjdsgao5o-1.jpg

All the front accessories/brackets installed
Throttle body installed
Mounted all the intake mounted sensors (was able to use the brackets I had, and the air cleaner fits without a spacer)
Ran/Plugged in the fuel injection harness
Installed the EGR
Installed the throttle cable/TV cable bracket
Cleaned the fire wall mounted harnesses

Not pictured from this past weekend:

My buddy sand blasted my Ram Horn exhaust manifolds
I cleaned/sanded/prepped/primed/re-painted the inner fenders
Prepped the steering shaft components for re-painting
Cleaned the grill/hood/radiator/other under hood components, ready to be installed when the time comes

Not pictured from last night:

Painted exhaust manifolds (used Rustoleum Bar-B-Q grill paint, will see if it works)
Installed new O-rings on the old PS lines, hope they don't leak
Installed new O-rings on steel fuel lines, hope they don't leak
installed knock sensor
Installed oil pressure switch

I should get my exhaust manifold bolts today, and my new auto trans cooler lines, too. New master cylinder will be here Friday.

I hope to have this thing running/driving this weekend.

That's it for now:fingerscrossed:

Loving this thread and love your work, it looks great

Appreciate it :cheers::cheers:

There are a few more things I wish I could have got to while I had it down this time, I figure I will get to them during the frame off:rolleyes::eek::crazy::smokin::cheers:

A bit more work completed last night:

IMG_20150527_205720901_zpsbyfblvjh-1.jpg

Installed the grill and radiator
Hooked up all the coolant hoses
Re-ran the alternator/charging circuit wired
Finished bolting down the alternator/associated braces
Hooked up all my starter wiring
Installed battery tray
Removed leaking master cylinder

Still need to:

Figure out/run my new metal auto trans cooler lines
Install exhaust manifolds/hook back up exhaust
Install distributor/run spark plug wires (after priming oil system)
install the PCV hoses/fuel tank venting canister
Install fenders/steering shaft
Install new master cylinder/bleed brakes

A busy next few days:crazy:

I ended up helping a buddy install/set up a new ring and pinion in the front of his CJ-5, so I didn't get as much done on this one as I hoped, but its almost there:fingerscrossed:

I completed the following:

Installed the freshly painted Borgeson steering shaft
Installed exhaust manifolds/hooked up exhaust
Installed/bench bled a new master cylinder
Hooked up the charcoal canister/PCV lines/O2 sensor/temp gauge sender
Ran all new transmission cooler lines (pretty happy with this, took a lot of time)

I hope to install the fenders/hood/inner fender junk tonight, plus hook up the battery. I still need to:

prime oil pump
run spark plug wire
install distributer

After that, it should fire up:fingerscrossed:

But, that will probably have to wait until next week, or the week after:eek: We have a ride at Sicily Island this weekend, then National next week, so:crazy::crazy:

Nice work, as always.

The trip to "Sand Blast 8" will work as a good break-in period. It should be ready to rock & roll by the time you get there. You know your more than welcome to use my shop up there to perform any needed service or maintinance.

Appreciate it Toby:thumbsup::cheers:

I should have plenty of time between the National trip and Sand Blast to get it broke in/bugs worked out:crazy: Once its back up and running, I plan on making the tan Scrambler my daily driver so that it will get some miles on it before the Michigan trip:thumbsup::wave:

I got a good amount of work completed last night:

Fenders installed
All the fender junk installed (coolant/washer bottles/jack/ect.)

IMG_20150603_202735711_zpswbrhvm7f-1.jpg

Sure is a bunch of stuff under the hood:crazy::crazy:

I also loosely put the hood back on, it will be sitting like this for a week or two:ZZZ:

IMG_20150603_203332968_zps3c9odvbo-1.jpg

I have to pack tonight, taking the red Scrambler to Sicily Island, Louisiana, Friday-Sunday for a Jeep trip. I get back, go to work Monday/Tuesday, repack the red Scrambler, head up to Hawk Pride for the National Event on Wednesday:thumbsup::wave:

So, the following week, the only things left to do before the tan one is ready to fire up:

prime oil pump
install distributor/plug wires
bleed brakes

That's it, for awhile:wave:

Be safe my friend. Looking forward to seeing you next Wednesday. :bacon:
