Throwback Thursday - CJ-8.com style

CherokeeRaceJeep1982001-1.jpg

My '78 Cherokee Chief (360 and latter with a 401) with my sand racer loaded up and ready to go. Probably about 1981 or so.

I just scanned these. I think they are from 1990. Not sure why, but I don't seem to have any old pics of the Scrambler when it's not dirty...

Summer 2003, my first scrambler was this 1983 bondo filled and poorly running thing. These pics were from the day i brought it home. It had a swapped in very early straight 6 for some reason (like a one barrel carb'd, metal valve cover 1975 ish editon) and it was a repaint on the outside with slate blue paint and interior still remaining inside.

My first CJ was many years earlier in 1996, and those photos ill have to dig out.

Wasn't 1974 the last year the 232 single barrel was installed in CJs?

My wife had a single barrel on a 258 in her 76 CJ5 when we got it and from when we went to get parts, they kept saying it had to be a 232, so not sure exactly when the 232 stopped and the 1 barrel stopped, but that is what was in hers and it was all stock.

I have a neighbor with a 75 CJ5 that has a 232 in it, but he has put a 2 barrel setup out of a later model 258 with a weber, so not sure what it had on it originally.

Eric said it was swapped in, so it definitely came from something else and probably was just something they had available.

The one thing I've learned in the last 50 years of working on Jeeps is "Anything is possible with a Jeep". I've seen a 401 in a 1973 Commando unloaded straight from the factory and a brand new Cherokee Lerado with a 232 single barrel T-18/model 20 unloaded from the factory. Those Toledo boys pretty much did their own thing when it came to putting them together.

I know it isn't Jeep related, but exactly 24 years ago today... I took my hard earned money and spend $1800 to buy this 1982 Honda Prelude with 80K on the clock from my Mother's boss at the time. It was his wife's car.
It sat in the driveway for 3 months until I got my license and I drove it through high school and 1 year in college until I was t-boned in an intersection... girl had her license for 4 days and was talking on a "car phone"... I didn't walk for a month... had a lot of good times in that old girl and all I ever did was change the oil, wash and wax her and put some brakes and tires on her. Wow, I just re-read that and I can't believe it has been that long since I got a license :)

It was a very, very simple car to work on and that got me into working on my own stuff and eventually into working on Jeeps, cars, tractors, anything with an engine, etc.
I wish I still had her today, although I am pretty sure I wouldn't fit too well in it as it was pretty tight even back then.

The funny thing was I worked at blockbuster when I owned it and that picture went through the laminating machine that made the blockbuster cards so it was able to preserve it like the day it was taken... just came across it the other day and is definitely a throwback, not too many people even know what the Gen 1 Preludes looked like.

PS> That accident is what got me into not having small little cars and only driving large. lifted vehicles... theory being if someone is going to hit me, they are going under me and not through me ;)

Throw back to 2004.

That same first scrambler getting a trophy at the pa jeep show, my friend Andy driving. It was sold on eBay a few weeks later and wound up in Hawaii of all places on a hunting ranch because it had 4:10s. Now I remember why that transplanted 6 cyl was in there. It used to be a 4cyl

Throwback to where I got my start building stuff.... small 1 car garage with all the stuff jammed in there including various Jeeps, corvettes, etc.
I am so very happy to have space now ;)

I actually had a black 1979 Prelude in highschool, same exact body style. I think I got a couple years out of it, I purchased it for $200.00 and the the hook came and got it for free when it finally died. Passenger floor had only carpet, metal was gone. Front passenger had to ride with their feet up or under the glove box up against the fire wall.

Really fun car to drive though. People loved the power moonroof/sun roof.

It was LOADED... had a power moonroof, A/C, stereo with tape player... crazy for a first kid car back then.
it was a 5 speed and technically sat 4 people, but yeah, if someone say behind me, I was driving with my knees in the dash and couldn't shift too well... also with 4 200+ pounders in there, the engine was a little underperfoming.

Well, I can't go back much before 2000 with Scrambler pics. but this is from the first Nat'l Scramble in Hot Springs!

Lets see if this works, my first photo scans
FPhotoScan.jpgStoy Pass-Kite Lake- 045.jpgirst is my 74 CJ5, bought new in Jan 1975 on the beach at Cape Hatteras in about 1977 or so

Next is the same Jeep after I did a frame up rebuild in the mid to late 80s, the pic was taken at the Chile Challenge outside Las Cruces NM

and last is my 83 Cherokee Chief on Medano Pass Colorado in the late 80s...

I dont have any early scrambler pics but there should be one from May of this year in Lockhart Basin outside Moab Utah

well clearly not as well as hoped, the last one is from kite Lake in Colorado, not Lockhart basin, mine is the hard top, the nicer one! lol
