Wow, I guess I'm out of touch. Way, WAY back I remember buying 30 lb tanks for $30.00 - I'm talking back before they banned it.

I used to have an auto repair shop, and I took classes on Mobile AC systems. I remember R-12 having a steeply ascending price (tax) scale. Last price that I remember seeing then, it was over $1200.00 a lb. This was probably about 16 years ago.

I had no idea that it lost it's desirability. From my (very dated) experience, systems which were originally designed to use R-12, just don't perform well when swapped over to R-134. At least, not without substantial modifications. Anyway, I learned something new.

I converted my green CJ over to R134. Just swapped the compressor fittings to R134, flushed the system, and charged it. It blew cold as crap for about 3-4 years when I got a pinhole in the hard line running from the dryer to the condensor. I've gotten it fixed, but haven't ever vacuumed the system down and recharged it again.

R12 was going for big bucks for a while, but most cars now have either been retrofitted or are off the road if they originall took R12. Just don't have the number on the road that take it anymore.

When I worked retail in Houston TX, I stacked 3 pallets of cans like that in the main aisle of the store with a 99 cents a can sign sitting on top and sold every last can that one summer.

Cars with large, flat front radiator openings (like CJ's) should do better, but most of the mid-nineties cars we were working on back then were "bottom breathers," like the Ford Taurus. They didn't fare so well with direct refrigerant swaps. At least, not without modifying things a bit. Usually, you had to use a certain % less of the R134 vs what was originally called for with R-12, plus change out the receiver/dryer or accumulator, plus replace all the oil in the system, which involved physically removing, draining, and flushing each component of the system. It was a mess.

Anyway, thanks for the education.

I've got a case of that stuff in the garage too.

There are drop in replacement for our 12 now that brought the price of it down, but it one time it was very expensive
R 22 refrigerant is $500 for a 30 pound tank right now

Is that the "freeze 12" or something like that? How does it work? I've got an 83 GMC that I need to get the AC worked out on, and was planning on converting to R134. Might be easier to fix the leak and use the R12 substitute.

.....Because who doesn't need a diamond pattern roll bar cover? Came with a rough 1983 I bought last week. Just grabbing some stuff before she goes away. The one-piece front clip may end up on my shop as a man door awning. x.jpgy.jpgz.jpeg
