My good buddies Chuck and Tiffany came by, so I also was able to drop the transmission/transfer case.
The transfer case came out easy enough. It was easier to unbolt the adapter from the transmission and remove the adapter/transfer case as one unit.
Note the O-ring seal on the adapter. I am pretty sure that the transmission does not have a seal on the rear output shaft, so the adapter housing to transfer case input shaft interface must be a tight fit. The way this adapter fit to the rear of the transmission, this should be a leak free set up, I hope.
Quick picture of the skid plate, and the Harbor Freight transmission jack, which actually worked really well. I usually borrow the "super duty" transmission jack from work, but this smaller/lighter jack worked great.
The transmission came out very easy. Automatics are much easier to remove/install compared to manual transmissions IMO. Basically pulled the starter, dip stick tube, kick down cable, torque converter lock up solenoid wiring, and removed the three flex plate to torque converter bolts, and it was on the ground. One thing I found interesting - this transmission weighs twice as much as the Dana 300!!! Another note - While turning the crankshaft with a big ratchet (to gain access to the TC bolts, it felt like this engine is really, really tight/good compression. Hopefully another good sign.
Yeah, more stickers!!! The previous owner said the transmission was rebuilt, I am hoping this sticker confirms that. It also looks like someone sprayed "Purple Power", or something similar, on the aluminum housing and did not wash it off fast enough, resulting in the "white spots/blotches" on the aluminum.
The torque converter was empty, so I plan on adding some fluid to it before reinstalling the transmission. I have heard that you do not have to pre fill the torque converter, but I would rather be safe then sorry.
The front seal on the transmission is brand new, and still feels new/supple/good. I am going to leave it alone.
I do not believe the rear output shaft has a seal. So, I should be good to go here.
So, besides pre filling the torque converter, I do not plan on doing anything else to this transmission. The front seal looks good, there is no rear seal, so I am just going to hope for the best. I am not going to attempt to take apart an automatic transmission, I will leave that to the experts. The previous owner was very honest, and judging by what I have seen, this transmission was recently rebuilt, never run, so it should be good to go. Once I reinstall the transmission, i might pull the pan/change the filter, but it is probably brand new. I might wait till after I run the Scrambler a few miles before changing the filter. One other good thing, the PO installed a drain plug in the pan. I might put a transmission temperature gauge port in, too.
As far as the transfer case goes, I am going to partially disassemble it, inspect it, and hopefully just change a few seals/paint the case. If I find any "issues" with it once it is in pieces, I will address them.
That's it for now.
