Spankrjs' 1984 Long Term Project

Quick little update.

I was able to get the Loctite out of the "extra, threaded wheel holes", so I installed the aluminum pipe plugs I ordered. The plugs are a little "lighter" then I expected, but they should work.

Picture of the plugs I used:

And installed, the "visible" side:

IMAG0634_zps079b5515-1.jpg

The "inner" side. I hope that this arrangement will allow for a good, leak free weld.

IMAG0635_zps67d09ef6-1.jpg

I am going to try to drop these off to get welded up today/tonight. Hopefully, this will be the end of my wheel troubles:fingerscrossed:

My good buddies Chuck and Tiffany came by, so I also was able to drop the transmission/transfer case.

The transfer case came out easy enough. It was easier to unbolt the adapter from the transmission and remove the adapter/transfer case as one unit.

IMAG0636_zps573b3eaa-1.jpg

Note the O-ring seal on the adapter. I am pretty sure that the transmission does not have a seal on the rear output shaft, so the adapter housing to transfer case input shaft interface must be a tight fit. The way this adapter fit to the rear of the transmission, this should be a leak free set up, I hope.

Quick picture of the skid plate, and the Harbor Freight transmission jack, which actually worked really well. I usually borrow the "super duty" transmission jack from work, but this smaller/lighter jack worked great.

IMAG0644_zpsd8ea937a-1.jpg

The transmission came out very easy. Automatics are much easier to remove/install compared to manual transmissions IMO. Basically pulled the starter, dip stick tube, kick down cable, torque converter lock up solenoid wiring, and removed the three flex plate to torque converter bolts, and it was on the ground. One thing I found interesting - this transmission weighs twice as much as the Dana 300!!! Another note - While turning the crankshaft with a big ratchet (to gain access to the TC bolts, it felt like this engine is really, really tight/good compression. Hopefully another good sign.

Yeah, more stickers!!! The previous owner said the transmission was rebuilt, I am hoping this sticker confirms that. It also looks like someone sprayed "Purple Power", or something similar, on the aluminum housing and did not wash it off fast enough, resulting in the "white spots/blotches" on the aluminum.

The torque converter was empty, so I plan on adding some fluid to it before reinstalling the transmission. I have heard that you do not have to pre fill the torque converter, but I would rather be safe then sorry.

The front seal on the transmission is brand new, and still feels new/supple/good. I am going to leave it alone.

IMAG0638_zps1cb2f97b-1.jpg

I do not believe the rear output shaft has a seal. So, I should be good to go here.

IMAG0639_zpsbbbf4fda-1.jpg

So, besides pre filling the torque converter, I do not plan on doing anything else to this transmission. The front seal looks good, there is no rear seal, so I am just going to hope for the best. I am not going to attempt to take apart an automatic transmission, I will leave that to the experts. The previous owner was very honest, and judging by what I have seen, this transmission was recently rebuilt, never run, so it should be good to go. Once I reinstall the transmission, i might pull the pan/change the filter, but it is probably brand new. I might wait till after I run the Scrambler a few miles before changing the filter. One other good thing, the PO installed a drain plug in the pan. I might put a transmission temperature gauge port in, too.

As far as the transfer case goes, I am going to partially disassemble it, inspect it, and hopefully just change a few seals/paint the case. If I find any "issues" with it once it is in pieces, I will address them.

That's it for now.

Love that stack picture. You closely resemble Lamont but act more like Fred Sanford. Are you buying more tires from the shop that helped you get Brokeback for free? Or did they just do it because you're a repeat customer?
This scrambler is coming out great. I may have to wait to bring you my red one until after you get this one up and running.
:cheers: Twin Peaks style!:drool: :bacon::bow:

You so crazy, I think I want to have yo baby...........:rotfl::rotfl:

Ohhhh, that transmission must be from the Texas dealer "Daddy Longlegs edition" Scrambler. Only 2500 made! SCORE!

Ha Ha, I just noticed that:rotfl::rotfl:

But, it is much safer then the ever elusive "Scorpion" edition :thumbsup:

Not sure if that is a CA, LA, or MS lovely????????

They have them in NH... well, they used to exist, but when you put a big piece of ice on the finger, then they don't want to get the fingers dirty anymore... man I miss those days of having a helper, and when it was hot, she was asking if I wanted a beer... now all she says is, you are going to have ANOTHER beer!?!?!?!?!

By Tiffany, he meant goat. By transmission/transfer case, he meant panties. Yes, that is Chuck's hand in the photo from when they picked up Tiffany. I don't want to know what came after "That's it for now." Poor Tiffany!

I want a buddy named Tiffany that can do that too. Those types of things don't exist up here in NJ ;)

Yep, they are pretty hard to find, worse then finding NOS parts:thumbsup:

That was supposed to be our little secret:rotfl: But on a serious note, that was one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen, I am hoping that there was a legitimate reason for the goat to have panties on, only in Louisiana!!!!!!

Somehow this thread is getting completely twisted out of control!!!!:confused:

My threads sometimes do get off course:shrug: But, let me see if I can steer it back straight:thumbsup:

I had a shop weld the aluminum plugs in the wheels yesterday, hopefully it is an air tight solution, the welder was pretty confident it would be so:fingerscrossed:

I am going to try to have the tires mounted to the wheels this weekend, hopefully for the last time. I also would like to get the transmission reinstalled, since I am only going to dump some fluid in the torque converter, this should be a fairly straightforward task.

I need to get my red Scrambler ready for the trip to Missouri next week, so I will be taking a break from this Scrambler for week, after this weekend.

That's it for now:thumbsup:

I've never been to SMORR but I have several friends that go there. They love it! It is about 4.5 hours south of me. If I had a Jeep that was put together enough I would love to meet you down there!

Yous still have about 3 days before I get there, plenty of time to get your Scrambler ready:rolleyes::thumbsup: Maybe next time

SMORR rocks! Can't wait to go back!

That is what I have heard, it should be fun, except it looks like rain on Thursday, coupled with tent camping, could be interesting:eek: I really wanted to go to SMORR last year, but I had just got back from Moab, and I needed to get some "pay the bills" work done:angry:

Update on CA Scrambler - I had the tires mounted to the wheels. Three of the five tire/wheel assemblies are leak free. The fourth tire rim/assembly leaked, so I took the two wheel back and had some more weld thrown on them. They should be good to go now, but I wont have time to check them out until next week, after SMORR.

I took the RE sway bar disconnects off my red Scrambler, upgrading to JKS, and I will use the old RE ones on the '84 which is missing the links.

I plan on reinstalling the transmission tonight, and that will be all the work I will get done this week. I have a pretty good stock pile of parts ready to install/reinstall, just need to get it done.

That's it for now/this week.

A few quick pictures before I head to SMORR:thumbsup:

I have three of the tire/wheel assemblies ready to go.

IMAG0652_zps5c44f231-1.jpg

I still need to get the last tire mounted to a wheel. I am now one tire short, due to the spare that came with the Jeep having too many screw holes in one place, it was not salvageable. I have the last tire/ two wheels loaded up, ready to get assembled, sometime next week.

IMAG0653_zps5cffeb2d-1.jpg

And I got the transmission reinstalled. I can't really take credit for this, my good buddy Chuck did most of the work, I just supervised/turned the crank to get the flex plate holes lined up with the holes in the torque converter.

As for the transmission, it went back in easy. Automatics are much easier to reinstall compared to standards, IMO. We were able to get one quart in the torque converter before installing it, so it will not be starting "dry". Speaking of torque converters, we almost installed the transmission without it:crazy:

I just noticed the speedo drive gear in one of the above pictures, I might need to do some research on what gear I need in this transmission for the 4.10's/33" tires, so the speedo reads correctly.

When I get back, I will tear down the transfer case, inspect it, and hopefully just have to clean it up/install new seals. I also need to "fine tune" the transmission mount/rear drive line angle. Once the transfer case is back in, the last major obstacle will be the engine wiring, but it shouldn't be too bad (famous last words)

That's it for now.
