Another Scrambler Purchase/Road Trip - UPDATE- BODY ON FRAME AGAIN

That is a "Canadian" thing I think. Just to see if we are paying attention.

:banghead: fronts are worn more than the rear... :banghead:

:rotfl:

So it's been awhile since you did the AX15 swap. Are you liking it better than the T5 set up? How many miles and any issues?

:rotfl:

Yep, mine too:banghead: I let the "real" mechanic at work look at my Scrambler last week, he couldn't find any mechanical problems. He seems to think, like me, I just didn't rotate them enough. But, and I will have to take pictures, the wear on the fronts isn't like "normal cupping", the leading edge of every other tread block is wore, almost like a defective tire issue or something:shrug: I'm just going to throw the fronts on the back and wear them back down:thumbsup:

Yes, I like the AX15 much better then the T5, it hasn't blown up yet:rotfl:

I am running a Toyota truck version AX15, so the gear ratio's are almost identical to the T5, especially the deep first gear. So, driving the Scrambler with this AX15 is almost identical to driving a T5. A few of the ratios are a bit deeper then the T5's, just a little difference, so I actually like this AX15's ratios more then the T5's, if that makes sense:thumbsup:

No issues and no problems, not sure of the miles:shrug: I drove it from Biloxi, MS to Moab, UT, and back, and to Hot Springs Arkansas and back with no problems, so :fingerscrossed: I think I have close to 4,000 miles on the swap, no problems.

The T5 in my green Scrambler has a B&M short throw shifter, which I love. My AX15 in the red Scrambler has the standard, stock shifter. The short throw shifters are very nice, but I don't have any problem with the stock AX15 shifter, the shift throws are just long compared to the B&M equipped T5.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. I'm swapping one in probably this weekend, hoping to fix t5 issues. After 215K miles I think my t5 is just done. I'm also upgrading to hydraulic clutch and B&M Shifter.

Sounds good:thumbsup:

Let me know how that B&M shifter fits/works:drool::thumbsup::wave:

OK, Got a question for you. You mentioned on pg 81 or 82 that you had to install a new pilot bushing. Is your AX15 1992 and newer? On Novak's Website They have two pilot bushings for the AX15, one is 88-91 and one is 92-99.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/pilot_bushings/gm1_to_ax15.htm
PN: PB-3901295 AX15 88-91
PN: PB-3901357 AX15 92-99
My transmission is from a 91 Cherokee with internal slave clutch so it should use the same bushing as a T5 right? Tranny is currently at the shop or I'd compare.
Also, it's months too late, but if you ever need to remove another pilot bushing, AutoZone loan-a-tool program blind hole pocket bearing puller. Yanks that sucker right out.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'm up to 5 times reading the AX15 setup.

Mine must be the newer version, the stock bushing would not work, Novak sent a new bushing with the transmission.

Yep, the puller would be easier, I just forget to plan ahead sometimes:banghead:

I finally took some pictures of the tires. It is kind of hard to see in pictures, but it will kind of show what I am talking about.

Front tire pictures. The "left" in the pictures shows the "trailing edge" of the tires. Note how there is no dust from the garage floor on this part of the tread because it has worn faster then the front "leading edge" of the tires. Both front tires have the exact same weat pattern. It's not really a "cup", its just the trailing edge of every tread block has wore down faster then the front. The wear does not skip a row of tread blocks like "cupping" would cause.

A rear tire picture, showing good/even wear:

I cross and "front to back" rotated the tires. So, now both "wore funny front tires" are on the rear. This has changed the already loud acoustics, the tire noise is much louder now. Hopefully, after a couple thousand miles, the "wore funny" tires will even out.

That's it for now:wave:

Come back to this thread 4 years later and love how the Jeep turned out.

Appreciate it:thumbsup::wave:

Around 25,000 miles on it since I re-built it in the garage, lots of fun:thumbsup:

Moab (x2)
Michigan Sand Dunes
Kentucky National Event
Superlift ORV
Hawks Pride Alabama (x2)
Choco Loco Alabama
Sicily Island Louisiana (x4)
Boggs and Boulders Alabama (x3)

And a bunch of other wheeling/road trips, and THREE T5's, hope I finally fixed that:rotfl::rotfl::wave:

Yep I read the entire thread gave me some plans for mine. Did you wheel any of yours before adding injection?

My fronts wore the exact same way, almost. There was more wear every 3rd set of lugs. Rotated front to rear, hasn't evened out in a few months...

I am still hoping a few "long" (700 mile) road trips even them back out:shrug:

Few months = 1000 miles or so. I think I let it go too long initially.

Is there residual fuel pressure in the line going to the injectors. Sounds like you are having a leakdown issue and the fuel pump is having to catch up to get enough pressure to the injectors to get them to work correctly.

I am hoping I caught mine in time:fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed: I rotated the tires the other day and took a short drive around the neighborhood. It is quite noticeable how the tire noise has changed from loud to louder as a result:crazy:

That would probably explain the slightly rough/slightly up/down idle for 20 seconds or so upon initial start up. The last time I checked the pressure after it sat (around a year and a half ago) it was a hair lower then it should have been, maybe around 35 pounds or so, I cant remember:shrug:

I need to check it again, then nail down this issue. Like you, I think it is either a fuel pressure issue or maybe even an IAC issue:shrug:

I don't think I have any leaking injectors, the engine fires right up, no black puff, does not smell rich. I have the "two line system", with the fuel pressure regulator on the rail. Maybe the diaphragm is leaking a bit:shrug:
