Introduction... From Louisiana!

Hey guys, I just wanted to make my introduction official! I am from northeast Louisiana and have just purchased my first CJ8. Friday I picked up a 1982 Scrambler from a local guy that I have harassed about it for about 6 months now. Basically the first time I talked to him about it the Jeep wasn't for sell. He and I work in related fields so we talk relatively often on the phone and in person, so I had many opportunities to poke at him about it. When I didn't even have money I would ask about his Scrambler, and he continued that it wasn't for sell. Well, on December 30th I asked him about it when I called him on business and he told me that he wasn't really interested in selling it at the time. Within the next two hours he seemed to have changed his mind. I received a return call around mid day and he told me he would be interested in making a deal on it due to some circumstances that come with life. I was ecstatic, but tried my best not to show it on the phone. After all, I have only seen this CJ8 one time months ago- and after finding out it wasn't something he had any interest getting rid of I didn't really do a thorough inspection. Now though? Now things have changed, the climate of his situation have changed and now there is more than just interest- it was a real possibility that I could own this Jeep! I got off work at 5:00 pm and proceeded to drive to his location, and once arriving it didn't take me long to find the prize! I had brought my dad in tow so he could help to evaluate the situation, after making a once over of the Scrambler we felt pretty good about what we were seeing.

1982 Jeep Scrambler
51k original miles
258 engine
4 speed manual transmission
Good running and driving condition. However, the fuel gauge is inop, the carb has been swapped out, the tires are 31" Remington Mud Brutes, blue paint, the wooden bed rails, everything was 100% solid. Again, trying to mask our excitement we left without being able to make contact with the owner, because he was unavailable at the time we were there. The next morning I called him and asked him when I could come and get the deal done. Unfortunately, he would be unavailable until Friday the 2nd! I made plans to be available that day, and patiently waited as the clock ticked away. I woke up early on Friday, unfortunately I ended up having to stop into my shop and work on a project for around an hour and a half to get it finished up before I left to go and pick up our newest addition. When I arrived I was delighted to find out that there were extra parts that came with it! Albeit, they were small parts- but OEM uncut keys, blinker lenses and bezels were all just an added bonus. Money exchanged hands and I was off to climb into my brand new... Or brand used Jeep Scrambler. Although I only had 20-30 miles to go home I still was still a little uneasy about driving this vehicle that I have no knowledge of home... Without my cell phone that I had conveniently left at my shop before the trip! I was out of options at this point though. My girlfriend had ridden along to drive back my Rubicon after the purchase, so that would have to do for a back up plan. So we crank the Scrambler up for the first time, much to my surprise it was purring like a kitten. After stopping for lunch we drove home without incident and luckily after giving a thorough inspection once back at my shop I felt at ease seeing there wasn't much work to be done to her. A little paint, a few little mechanical repairs, and a bit of general TLC and it will be ready for daily use.

I have to figure out what is going on with the fuel gauge, I also found the speedometer to be very... Erratic? It bounces around a good bit to such an effect that I have no indication of if I am going 25 or 75 mph while driving if I were to be focusing on the gauge. I believe this is more than likely going to be a cluster issue? The steering box does have a pretty good leak, so I will have to address it in the near future. I have a few cosmetic items to take care of also, but those are generally easy for me to accomplish.

I am still stoked to own this thing! I have been eyeballing them since I have seen my first one and now I actually own one! I ended up selling my Chevelle a few weeks ago, so I suppose it was the key to funding this as well as a few other projects that I have going currently. I hated to see the Chevelle go, but it is what has made all of this possible! BTW, if any of you guys from around Louisiana want to meet up some time, I am always up for meeting like-minded people!

Welcome and congrats!

I'll be the first and probably not the last, but we like pictures around here.

Hey, I'm new to this forum... I am still trying to figure out the picture thing as we speak! lol

I have 3 Jeeps currently: a 1989 YJ, a 2003 Rubicon, and the Scrambler now! I do have a vehicle addiction apparently. I still have several hot rods as well!

Wow !! Welcome. That is one Super original and straight Scrambler!

Welcome! And nice Scram.
The first stop I made after I unloaded my Scram was the gas station (non working fuel gauge) the second was a Radio Shack to pick up a GPS (speedo issues just like yours).
Look at a Garmin if you don't already have one, Nice large speedo and an easily resettable trip meter, think I paid about $80. Makes the shake down runs a lot easier.
You have lap belts or 3 point? Lap only means early '82 and the sport bar is unique to '81 and early '82 because of this. That was one of the first "Scrambler trivia" bits I learned. Kind of neat knowing that you have a "sub-category" of an already rare breed.

Lap belt only! That is new information to me... As well as most any other information about them. Lol I love it so far... Oh also funny story. When the previous owner got it the headlamps were inop. He took it in to be serviced and the shop put a dimmer switch in it. The lights worked for approximately 30 mins before going out again. This is when he stopped driving it. During my inspection the dimmer swig turned out to be bad... A 7 dollar part was what kept him from driving it. It's nice to see stuff like that happens to more than just me! Lol
Thanks for all the info guys!

Pull the speedo cable and remove the inner cable. Check it for issues, if good lube it back up with dry graphite and see it clears the speedo issue. Oh and Nice looking Scrambler!

Persistence pays off. Nice catch, and more pics! Maybe that should be its name: Persistence!

Thanks for all the kind words guys! Hopefully I will get a chance to get to work on it this weekend. I am still shocked at how solid it is. Several people have stopped by my shop already and asked me about it. Needless to say? It's still inside my shop! Haha

Craner8: Persistence? I think I like that!

It feels pretty good to share a picture of my new Scrambler and to have people who obviously have a wealth if knowledge about these seeming to agree that it is in pretty solid shape. I hope to have it finished up by like March or so.

A couple of pictures for you guys! I plan on starting a build thread on here as soon as we go into the OR.

OOOooooo!!! Purty!! Look at all that Slate Blue interior! Slate Blue is a more rare color interior and is also more difficult (and therefore usually more expensive) color to find. Welcome to the site and you have a very nice, mostly original, solid Scrambler!

Well, in other great news? The pass side seat bottom, and halfway up the back appears to be perfect. The driver side was cinched down too tightly for me to reveal the factory seat cover condition, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is half as good as the first.

Finding out more about it makes me even more eager to get in there and work on it! I am planning on doing a light duty restoration on it... Basically just driver quality. This is probably going to be a nice running around rig for my dad and myself and a secondary 'shop truck' so to speak. I have to be perfectly honest, I love this thing already. Apparently I am not in the minority based on the popularity locally, and obviously on the interwebs here. I see all these awesome rigs on here and am just in awe of some of the craftsmanship that has gone into some of these things! I have always been a hot rodder of sorts, and recently (in the past year) I have managed to procure three Jeeps and one half cab Bronco. I am very happy to see that the interest in these in particular is so widespread! That means when I have any questions I will be able to find someone out there that knows the answer! In the last two days I have learned more about these than I had previously known (other than the fact that I liked them).

What is everyone's opinion on bedliner for the bed of them? Does it help/hurt the value of the Scrambler? The bed is very solid, however there is a dip in the area directly above the rear axle. I own a shop that does bedliners and things and it seems like a viable option. Keep in mind that I am just going to use it as a driver and a truck to pick up parts and things with also.

It's nice to see another Louisiana Scrambler. I'm from Lake Charles whenever you get ready to take it on some trails, maybe we can get a few scrambler guys together.
Peter

I would definatly not put liner in a solid original like yours. Just keep it honest and enjoy it. This question has brought been brought up numerous times in other threads. It will hurt the value if you line it. But based on what you're saying I doubt I'll be selling any time soon. Your Jeep my two cents.

Welcome! Glad to see another one in Louisiana. Let me know if you are ever in the Lafayette area.

I agree with this.

Welcome from another Louisiana owner. If I had one thing to do over it would be Not spraying bed liner.
