Check and make sure the shifter linkage is moving as far as it should at the transmission.

Noises indicate you've got bigger problems, however. Probably disconnect the driveshaft at the rear diff and pull it home...

The lever is moving, yes. And it is moving past where I assume it would need to to get out of park. As the lever moves as the shifter goes all the way to the furthers drive gear.

Yeah. I think I am just gonna disconnect at the rear diff and tie the drive shaft up and drag it home for now. I don't have a way to deal with the tranny.

Dragged it home. Not looking forward to dealing with it. Looking for replacement transmissions. Payton wants to swap it with a 4 speed. I keep telling him HE can't afford it. Thinking about picking up a th350 from craigslist and putting it in while we work on this one.

At least when the Jeep breaks bown, I am confident that I can deal with it. I guess I wll learn with this boat. It needs a lift so I can just crawl under it.

DO IT!!!!

Can you picture it? Instead of a lowrider, going with a 10 inch lift? This car is so low as it is, I cannot even get my head under it to look at anything. I so much enjoy just sliding under the Scrambler.

So crawled under the banana to see if I am going to be able to remove the transmission. It does not appear so. I need a way to lift this thing about 3 feet off the ground at the frame rails and my jack stands only go to 24 inches. And the Jack itself maxes out at 20 without using blocks, etc. So that will wait. The one thing I was able to do was take a pic of the transmission pan and research that it has a th400. SO now I am on the hunt for either a friend that has the jacks or a lift to do this task, or a shop to take my money and do it.

And I might be looking to get a replacement transmission. Depends on the cost of the rebuild vs the cost of a replacement. Fun times. In the mean time, we pulled the grill off to repaint the black that had faded away.

So much to do .....

By the way, is it worth it to swap in a different tranny? 4l60? th700r? The th400 is a good tranny, right? Not doing a manual transmission swap. I need this thing back on the road sooner than I can get that swap done.

Did the trans have issues shifting or slipping? I'd just pull the pan and valvebody in the car and fix the shifter shaft.

It appears to be stuck in Park. It drove to school just fine that one morning. Then It would not move to come back home. The shifter moves through the gate, and the linkage underneath appears to be moving and turning the "thing" at the transmission. But the car won't move and appears to be in Park.

Can you repair that stuff with the transmission still attached, just by removing the pan? That sounds promising. If I pull the pan, will I be able to see what is supposed to (or not) happen when the shifter is moved?

Watching videos. Looks like I should be able to see what the issue is when I take the pan off and follow the linkage inside. Cool. Now to jack it up onto ramps and crawl under there again. Hope it is something simple. Thanks a lot. I will update when I see something.

Well, I took the pan off. I thought I took a video of the movements, but it turns out only a pic. I will take a video when my son gets home from school. I can see less of the action than I was hoping for. And this does not look like what I saw on youtube videos. Not helping.
