I just found a set of Jeep Laredo wheels. I usually use Amtrak freight for large items, but they not shipping items because of Covid. Does anyone have a source for reasonably priced shipping?

When I bought a set of wheels the best price was from Fastenal. They ship from one of their locations to another. After the virus they stopped shipping other peoples stuff. Don't know if they are back to shipping and being resonable again. Might call them and see.

Shipping today is what it is... and it is not reasonable by any stretch... last set I sent via Fedex ... 5 boxes, $165 and that was with the discount.

Greyhound bus line used to have a shipping service for large items. I never used it and do not know if they still do it.

Walmart sells a box for about1.12 each that fits a rim perfectly, fold over the tops...weighs about 28-29lbs each with cap....fed ex is cheapest i find of the big three......done. maybe your seller will go for the effort if you throw a few extra bucks their way...can even offer to send pre paid labels and arrange a pickup...sometimes you have to make it easier on them to get the deal done :twocents:

I am a freight broker. I can give you a quote on anything you want that can strapped to a pallet. I need length width height and weight, to and from ZIP Code, will be much cheaper if you can do it business to business, not needing a forklift, assuming both sides that you ship it have a forklift and are not residential it will be the cheapest.

^^ Good to know!

I have had good luck using Greyhound, but shipping five boxes together might get expensive. Strapping five wheels to a pallet sounds a little more attractive to me.

That said, CB shipped my wheels several years ago via Fedex ground, and it worked out just fine.

The packaging is important, for sure. Mine arrived in very well padded boxes, with pipe insulation wrapped around each rim. A couple of the boxes looked like they had survived some pretty rough treatment, but the wheels all arrived here undamaged.

UPS and FedEx both have good options before you get into freight size. UPS will ship up to 50lbs in a reasonable box flat rate for $25 ($28 if you include their "green" fee). If the seller will box the wheels individually, you're looking at $125.

Last month, I bought a set of 4 wheels from a great seller. He nicely packed them all together in one large box that weighed 85 lbs. Worried me for a bit because the UPS quote for 1 box weighing that much was over $250. I then got a very good estimate from FedEx for a Saturday delivery (was much cheaper on Saturday) for $123 and that was maybe 4-day delivery.

I primarily use UPS and have an online account. Sellers provide me an estimate of box size and as long as its less than 50 lbs, I can get the flat rate ground (or less for really small pieces). I pay for the shipping online and then send the seller a PDF of the prepaid label(s). They can then drop off at any UPS pick-up point. FedEx works about the same way, and I will probably start checking with them more for heavier boxed items.

These are some good tips! This thread deserves a sticky or something.

I used to be that FedEx was much more expensive than UPS, but in the last few years, I have found that FedEx is usually cheaper.

On smaller parts, the USPS flat rate boxes are great, especially for heavy items. They are flat rate regardless of the weight.

Agree 100% with this!

I know guys that do this and they are filled with lead to cast their own round balls and conical bullets for muzzleloaders. They get kinda heavy when filled with melted down lead.

Go online and set up your own FedEx account, if you haven’t. You get a discount when you’re setup and they can bill your credit card directly.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Here is what I found: Amtrak (if they were shipping) $100 for all four boxes; Greyhound $183.76, 9 days and seller would have to drive 45 miles each way to drop off; UPS (with an account) $183.20; and FedEx (with an account) $138.64. I also tried uship but the prices were insane, $253 to $1523.

I can imagine! I used to have 3,000 lbs of lead that was scraps from lead lining used in cancer radiation treatment rooms (scraps from the original install). I used it in my wake boat, then sold it all to a guy that did tractor pulls. He melded it down and poured it in his frame rails so the competition would not know how much weight he was running. It it shocking how little space 3,000 lbs of lead takes.
