'84 Postal - Do What?!?

I have not Seen a MD Juan tub in person so I don’t know how bad they are before Willys Overland massages them. The Willys tub isn’t perfect by any means but I knew that going in. I’m happy I found the original tub and will use it for the postal.

The Willys tub will go to storage and wait until it’s needed. At some point in the future it may be my only option.

I would not relegate them to a coral reef as they are still steel, and (IMO) steel > fiberglass. If I was not 100% concerned with original i’d go aluminum.

But, this is from the perspective of a southerner that never deals with snow on the roads.

Steel is better than fiberglass (even if it's a MD Juan tub). Easier to fix the problems than a fiberglass tub.

Started disassembly of the Postal today. Unfortunately this is just so I can store it on an overhead lift at my house due to clearance issues. Hope to start full restoration within 6 months

Nice.

What is going on with the auto shifter?

That bend isn’t stock
Gotcha - no clue. I bought this a few years ago and it's been on the side burner since. Despite it's look it fires right up and shifts and can drive around the neighborhood. Once I get it apart I can see what the multiple POs must have done to the shifter. I honestly never thought about it being bent. LOL

How cool would it be to do a fairly accurate restoration of a US Post Office delivery truck, but with a lift and 32 or 33 x10.5s? You could apply the red and blue post office paint scheme with 'RETIRED' underneath. I think that would be killer. 😁

This very idea has been in the back of my head since the first day I decided to buy mine

Y’all are reading my mind ... here’s where I’m at (at least these next 5 mins)
I’d go back as close to stock as possible but with the following mods:
1. Install front passenger seat and rear bench. Nice thing is that they could easily be unbolted
2. Stay all white however have magnets made representing USPS to apply when at a show or something
3. The same BDS 2.5” YJ conversion lift and run 32s just like I’m doing in my ‘83
4. Use the original 258 however small upgrades like HEI etc like I’ve done in the past.

Question for the group on engine color - go back with factory black or do AMC blue? Personally I’ll never own a CJ that doesn’t have AMC blue on the motor BUT I see myself finishing the Postal, having a year or so of fun with it, then selling. I wonder which potential buyers would prefer?

If it isn't stock, I don't think most people would care about engine color. Alot of people also wouldn't have a clue what color it was originally. I say blue.

This.

Note that you’ll want spare rear leaf packs and/or add a leafs on hand to get the rears where they’ll hold up to the World Cab weight.
