I could't agree with my Bud TxsBill more! Say, what if I send a little $$ for things you will need at the hardware store??? Do any of you ("hammer Swingers") have a Paypal account??? :D

You could use mine. I can't take credit cards through my free account, but otherwise it should work (either credit you already have at PayPal or a bank withdrawl). I'm at bigwalton@earthlink.net. Add a note like "fisherman house stuff" for me to keep easy track.

Anything that doesn't get used this weekend can be transferred directly over to the main pot that JC has going. That should be real easy.

If JC's sent that already, I can just write them a personal check for the difference from all of us. I can hop online to find out the total we have at that point...

Wish I was closer, too!

I would love to help, but I live so far. If you post his address again, I will send the Only nurse from PLasticville to help speed his recovery. He can send her back when he has healed. I can also send some mulah to help with bills.

Eric, "And the money's away!" Because I can't be there to help with the "real work"...perhaps this $50 will help with the hardware purchase!

Got it, I'm taking up a collection here at work too! Already got $20 more!

Thanks a ton!

Now I'm going up for sure, it's just a matter of who else joins me :D :D

Visited today - my "Trip Report"

Got to spend some good quality time w/ Chris and Diana today... but I think I bored the heck outa him to the point of putting him to sleep... ha, ha! :o

Anyhow... For what he's been through, I'd say he looks good - not that Chris is my type  or would ever win a beauty contest :p . He is still quite tender (busted ribs), and is still got the 'joy' juice :D flowin' in to his arm. Nonetheless, we had a had a nice walk around the floor... at quite a quick clip for someone who has been thru the severe trauma he has experienced. (BTW, they related that his attending physician was the same one who operated on US AG Ashcroft. I thought that was kinda kewl. ) He ate while I was there, and he has a good appetite, so that is a blessing. (No John, I did not offer to help him w/ his chow. ;)

Took him a Jeep book and an ALLTHINGSJEEP.com glow-in-the-dark pillow case. (Between the morphine, percocet and glow-in-the-dark, his dreams might get pretty intense!)

He wanted me to pass on how very much ya'll love, prayers, comraderie, support, and willingness to help truly means to him. Diana re-emphasized it as well. Keep the cards, prayers, calls coming please... he is very encouraged by the support of his Scrambler brothers despite the fact that few of us have actually met one another in person.

On Walt's great and generous suggestion: I do not think they are quite ready for us to descend upon them yet. IMHO, Diana is just getting by (coping) day-to-day w/ this major 'life event' and has not given the house mods a lot of thought. (I think Truck may broach this issue w/ her in the next few days, and will report back...) 'Til then - rest assured - Chris and the Martin family will not want for anything (but maybe sleep) so long as Truck and I "have the conn" (that's squid 'boat drivin' talk :D for you non-nautical types). Of course, that's not to say any of the rest of the MD/N. VA guys are not welcome to join in the effort(s).

That said, I DO think we may be able to do some homework for Chris in a few weeks... once we figure out what needs to be done, collect the materie'l, etc. One of his co-workers is also well-versed in this sort of 'work' and may be able to collect up the materials we'll need.

Also discovered that Chris heat his home w/ a woodburning stove... maybe we can build up his woodpile? (No idea on how well stocked-up he is.) It sounds like they may be pressed for space... for the hospital-type bed Chris is going to need for awhile. (I noted that extended sitting was not real comfortable for him, standing every 15 mins or so - seemed like he was more comfortable standing, but that standing also sapped his strength threreby requiring him to sit again.)

Sounds like he will be out of work for a number of months, so his needs may be extended and substantial (don't forget, there are either 8 or 9 kids in that house). I say that only that we don't approach our sincere volunteerism as a sprint when we maybe oughta pace ourselves for a 5 or 10K.

Finally, there is a certain amount of amnesia as to why (&) what occurred. Chris and Diana are as curious as to what happened as the rest of us - no accident report received as yet.

I think that about does it for now... If there is anything more I can do, pls let me know. I'll probably try to go see 'em again in a few days.

Keep prayin' for his recovery and that their needs will be met... Ya'll are better'n blood family!

wow, this is the 1st I've seen of this! I'm so glad he's on the road to recovery- I kinda held my breath for the 1st few pages.
I've been down in florida putting a roof back on my parents house. Many areas STILL haven't even had an adjuster by to do an assessment..
Anyway, Eric you know I'm down 1 daily driver (see sig  ) if I can get the tailpipe on my 8 finished ASAP I'll head up there with you... when are you going???!

(No John, I did not offer to help him w/ his chow.
But you thought about it didn't you??? :D

I can come up with one or two loads of firewood, if they need it. Just let me know.

Alrighty then, I'll trust your judgement on that one Jerry, you would know better than I having first hand knowledge. My only concern was that they have what they need installed before he makes it home and has to make due without any of it (and that they don't have to deal with insurance to get it).

Once we have a feel for how this needs to happen, I'll either be there with tools and cash in hand or I'll forward anything we've collected to whomever is going to be there to help if I can't make it. The worst case is it gets forwarded directly to Chris and his family.

Thanks for the update and the good news on his condition!

"YOU GUYS ROCK!"

Eric thanks for thinking about that.............i will be sending a check this week with what i have collected so far....(got to wait for it to clear paypal)........if anything else flows in i will forward it as well..........Jerry and Russell keep us posted and sounds like this ought to help take a little worry off Diana's mind on getting the mods done for Chris when he come's home.............Thanks again guys for stepping up!-JC :D

Thanks Jerry,

Although I don't want to curb anyones enthusiasm, I also think this may be a little premature. We will definately keep close tabs with Diana on what may be needed. When that time comes that they know what that need is she is well aware of all of our sincere desire to jump right in and lend a hand to them.

In the mean time ... I know any other NVA folks that could visit would be greatly appreciated.

Truck

Unbelievable!

That's what you guys are. Unbelievable! You've touched my heart more than I can say. Wow. The big guy was in alot of pain this morning, and some smarty doc decided to come in this evening to tell him he was going to take away his morphine (happy juice!). Chris had already had dinner, but he was ready to eat the guy alive! I held him down and convinced the doctor that he was being premature and that one of the other docs already had that under control. He left the room unharmed.

I asked the big question today. Home? When? Doc says all the internal stuff looks good, but it will be a few more days getting the pain under control. He is unable to get in and out of bed on his own or use the potty alone (I know - TMI) so he's still pretty dependent on me.

I've emailed Truck with a list of trivial things, probably too much trivia, but I tried to list a variety of needs.

In case you want to pester Chris in his room, the number is 202-715-5914. He can't talk long cause it hurts to hold the phone, but he would love to hear from any of you!

Diana and the 7 munchkins

Let me know what he might need in the way of adaptive equipment.

As some of your know my wife is in a wheel chair. And we actually have a good bit of stuff that is extra, or slightly used that might help out.

So if he is going to need a wheel chair, shower bench, or other similar equipment let me know. I will either have stuff that he can use, or know where to get it at a lower price.

Also, once they are close to getting ready to come home. Let me know, and I could come up there to help out with fixing the house for mobility. I have a lot of experience with that now.

Jerry if you let me know what type of house it is and what condition he will be in when he is shipped home I could give you a better idea of what he might need.

Also, very good to hear that he is up and walking. That is very good to hear that there are few spinal isssues that are going to have to be delt with.

Hope he is ready to go home soon. That will usually be a big help to the recovery.

Carl

PLS DO NOT READ if you're offended by Christian-oriented exhortation.

Diana, don't mention it. We (Scramblers) ARE a family and we WILL take care of our own. :)

Working the list now... Coming up w/ 'an operations plan'. (Pls see attachment.) One of the first things we'll need to do is a recon (site survey). (BTW, I nominate Truck as Field Marshal :D.)

PLEASE CALL and pester Chris... it'll give poor 'fatigued' Diana a break! ;)

Okay here is today's "The Daily Bread" which I thought was particularly fitting for the current situation...:

February 15, 2005

All Year Long

[The Lord said], "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: . . . Is it not to share your bread with the hungry?" —Isaiah 58:6-7

During Lent (the 40 days prior to Easter) many Christians follow the practice of giving up something and taking the time to reflect on Jesus' sacrifice of Himself for us.

One group of middle-class believers in a church in the UK decided to live on the minimum wage. Their goal was to identify with those who live on little, to learn the joy of giving, to invite God to change their attitude toward money, and to challenge others in their church to do the same. For their study they chose Isaiah 58.

Afterward, one of the leaders of the group said they learned an important lesson. Living on less "makes you realize just how much you really can give away. It makes you look at what you normally give and realize that it is far from being sacrificial."

What they learned agrees with God's idea of what fasting and sacrificial living are all about. The Lord said to Israel, "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: . . . Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out?" (Isaiah 58:6-7). God was chiding His people because their fasting had become an empty ritual with no concern for others.

Let's give sacrificially to others—not just during Lent but all year long. —Anne Cetas

Grant us, then, the grace for giving
With a spirit large and free,
That our life and all our living
We may consecrate to Thee. —Murray

Your standard of giving is more important than your standard of living.

Wow

I leave for a couple of days and THIS is what happens!!??!!?!!

I just sat down and read from beginning to end. I got the bad, the worse, the ugly, the better, the encouragement, the help and the good news ALL IN ONE FELL SWOOP. My belated but continued prayers go out to Chris and the whole family as you continue to love Chris thru his healing.

Thank you to Diane and the rest of the family for mustering up the strength to keep us informed in light of your worries, concerns and heartaches.

Thank you to the folks of this forum for the constant reminder of what "brotherly love" is all about.

In the words of the infamous El Guapo: "What can you say about such men?"

Coming home

It looks like Chris will be on his way home this week. Diana is having a bed delivered tomarrow. The bed will need to be put in the living room. They need to have a large piano moved from living room to another room for the bed. It should take about 3 folks. So if anyone local is available in the next couple of days please let me know.

Truck

Awsome!

Glad to hear that he's getting to come home!............Wish i was closer so i could do more-JC

Tmi

Jerry,

TMI = Too much information, kind of like that prostate exam you were describing to us in the hospital room on Monday!

And, John, you'll be happy to know that Chris OFFERED Jerry part of his lunch - his Valentines red velvet cake as a matter of fact - and Jerry turned him down. He didn't ask twice, but I think even Jerry has the decency not to ask a man in a hospital bed for his food. (Was that drool I saw dribbling out of the corner of your mouth, Jerry ;) )

Chris told me today that he's going to need a handrail installed on the stairwell opposite side from the current one so he can use his good arm. Jerry can add that to the recon list (interesting attachment, Jerry).

Diana - THURSDAY OR FRIDAY I GET MY HUBBY BACK!!!

EXCELLENT!!!

I'm so happy to hear that he'll be back home soon! That's terrific!

Truck or Jerry, if it's going to be needed now, I can forward the money that we've collected for the home stuff to either of you so you have it to get started. Just let me know!
