Heads up: Tapatalk going away on CJ-8.com

The tapatalk app? The issues driving this decision are on the back end admin and the things they're forcing on us as the forum owners (Tapatalk only works with us installing stuff on the back end, it's not just an app that reads the forum, it's much more complex than that). I also have a ton of issues with the way the app works but that's beside the point. There is no debate to be had, the decision has been made.

No debates from me Eric.

I haven't actually used the Craigslist app....Just their mobile website on a browser.

I'm not sure I know enough about this to go looking at theme's to help. Whatever is picked will be fine.

KK

My experience is different. As a computer idiot I installed the CL app hoping it'd be easier. I've found it less useful and often searches done on the regular site return more results than the app despite using the same search parameters. I don't like missing jeep stuff so the app is getting ditched.
I'm still trying to figure out the regular cj8 site stuff. The slate blue comments confuse me. Lol

Hey Big W I'm heading up to our Dune House tomorrow night. Why don't you head that way for a couple of days and Ill help you get this computer thing all straitened out? :bacon:

I'm ok with this, even though I don't get on any of my forums nearly as much as I used to, I have always disliked the tapatalk app, maybe I'm just to old to learn new stuff. I always seem to have issues when I'm trying to use tapatalk, for me it's so much easier to just plug the phone or camera into the perputer and add stuff that way. Good looking out for the members here!

Must be Safari that doesn't allow the mobile theme. I'm on a iPhone 6S, using Safari.

Not a fan of Chrome personally. The convenience of it's connectivity can be a huge security nightmare if you forget to log out. We had an employee that used Chrome at work. Ended up quitting, but forgot to kill his log-in. His replacement asked if he was fired for watching porn at work- The new guy had opened Chrome and everything the old employee did at home was right there on the computer at work. His searches, his accounts, his full browsing history- everything. Yeah...don't care much for that.

Tapatalk was easy on my eyes, and uploading pics was cake. But, their constant notifications were annoying...just like Facebook...

Every browser in the world does the same Randy and it has nothing to do with a login.

Bump. Hope to take care of this yet this week. The situation with Tapatalk has only continued to degrade and we will be terminating it shortly.

A couple questions answered:

No, there will be no alternative replacement app, just use of the forum through mobile browsers, which have caught up to the forum software and now work quite nicely and quickly.

Photo posting may not be quite as simple, but it works in my testing of mobile browsers from either your photo albums or off the camera. Also, the fact that the photos will be hosted HERE ON THE FORUM and NOT ON TAPATALK'S SERVERS is a long-overdue change. We will likely lose photos people posted without knowing that TAPATALK ESSENTIALLY STOLE THEM BY DEFAULT and kept them on their own servers unless you told it to post them here.

There is a stripped-down "Default Mobile Style" you can select in the drop down in the lower left hand corner of any page on the forum and we hope to add another, newer mobile theme as well.

Please do not post trying to defend keeping it, the decision has been made and will be carried out. This thread was intended to give fair warning, I just haven't been able to follow through, but it will happen shortly.

Thanks for the efforts BW. I'm down with the change. What started as a good idea (but proved horrible for the site owner/staff) has gone to the crapper. Dealing with all the stupid ads inserted stealthily into the forums was a shock and caught me more than once. One of the forums I frequent has dropped attendance drastically. Not sure if it's due to Ttalk or one of the other evils out there. I'm looking forward to the change!

I understand as well and appreciate your efforts. I wish we had more time. I could probably whip something up to pull the pictures to your servers. Just for the heck of it I'll take a look tomorrow, to see how feasible it would be.

I don't see how you'd edit all of the related posts to point to the relocated photos en masse. Seems somewhat like a lost cause to me

This "feature" of Tapatalk was one of the first strikes against it and we should have pulled the plug on it way back when... hindsight is 20/20

It's doable (I think) Using a Perl script to process the HTML.

Does Tapatalk give you the statistics on total number of pictures uploaded and amount of storage used?

It will effect many many people. Many people operate from just a cell phone and while I understand the reasons behind it, tapatalk works beautifully for the mobile user. Frequency of posting is going to change for people like that , for sure. And losing all of those pics is a TON of loss. But it is what it is. As much as the saying is overused , that's what this is. At least this place is not like jeepforum.com , so on a computer , I totally appreciate that. And that's an understatement !!!

I'm starting to hate computers all around. Mobile or desktop. Been looking for old pics I had of my Scrambler build and getting no joy via Tapatalk. Gonna check when I get home on the laptop and hopefully the home site will turn em up. If so, that's one more (unnecessary) nail in the Tapatalk coffin.

That's what I'm saying though, tapatalk was a necessity on phones back when we added it, but phones, mobile browsers, and cell data (not to mention wifi) speeds have caught up to where the forum software works fine on mobile web browsers. This IS NOT a deal killer for the people like you who just do phones, it's simply a change of pace.

Not saying it's 100% as easy, but at this point, Taptalk has forced our hand.

I didn't say deal killer. But Pace will be molasses for some people. It's I would say 50 percent as easy maybe less, from my own experience trying out the switch before it happens. We can be optimistic, yes, we need to be ... but Tapatalk is a company because it works better and is easier and as seamless as any ap vs. a mobile browser mobile way of using forums, right ? Way better. It has faults. Yes. And faults we as users can't see that you are dealing with. But that's what it is.

Losing the photos of so many threads of so much good stuff Trumps all of this however.

Yep, it sure does suck that they made that the default to force people to keep using it.

No doubt.

So...what am I doing wrong. Still no joy on Safari. When I open up on my phone and select styles, this is all I see...
