Holley Sniper EFI for BBD Carbs

I hate to say it, but I got it “running” and then life has gotten in the way. Right now I am fighting the stock ignition. The plugs to the module are no good. I replaced the harness side plugs and still no good. Next step is to replace both with some weather pack connectors. Once that is done, then work on the idle issues.

Or the throttle blades are open too much

Could be, I had to do a bit of work to get over 85% throttle with the stock setup. And that was after adding the “BW” gas pedal shim. Being RHD just adds one more bit of complexity to the situation.

Think I documented my woes in my build thread - which i cant find now
Anyway - to cut a long story short I replaced all the ignition stuff and it worked much better and solved the high idle rpm

Or the throttle blades are open too much

I finally got back to this project, Errick called it. I adjusted the throttle stop screw to allow the blades to close completely, now it idles at 700. AFR is around 12.5 +/-.

I did have to replace the plug ends to the ignition box to get it to run. That is what has kept me away from it. Got frustrated, was not fun, so avoided it till I was ready to go at it again.

Next up is tuning / adjusting the transmission.

Ran around the neighborhood today with it, it is running great.

But, I was sitting in the driveway, adjusting the monitors. Next thing I knew, the engine died. Tried to start it, did not hear the fuel pump. Put 5 gallons in thinking it might have run out, but no. The fuel pump is not working. I have voltage at the pump, but it is not working. Pulled the top off the surge tank, and it is FULL of varnish. Nasty brown varnish. So, now I get to clean it all out and replace the pump. What joy!

Been doing some work on this at a slow pace.

Varnish was an under statement. The fuel filters looked like this:

Left top, 30 micron prefilter.

Left bottom, new 100 micron filter

Center, fuel pump prefilter sock.

Right, 10 micron post filter.

I siphoned as much gas out of the tank as I could, and it was a nasty light brown color.

After dropping the tank and pouring out the remaining fuel, this came out:

I have never seen sludge varnish of that color in a fuel tank. Yuk!

I have a new pump installed, new filters on the way, and will be replacing the hoses and vents on the tank.

Hopefully, I did not toast the injectors.

:fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

Yes, was running great after adjusting the throttle linkage to close the plates at idle.

Ran around the neighborhood several times, before the fuel pump died.

Disconnect the fuel line at the throttle body, run the pump to clean out the fuel line. Don't know if the sniper has a screen filter in the throttle body (don't believe so). If it does clean the screen. My mechanic got me on a fuel injector cleaner (blaster fuel injector cleaner) Put a bottle in at 1/4 to 1/2 tank. Did a good job of cleaning the trucks injectors when she started acting up. You should be ok if you use the 2 filters you got with the kit. Always a chance some very small stuff could get through.

Welp, there’s your problem.

Guess that might be why the fuel gauge did not work.

Also explains the chunky nasty colored varnished fuel.

Now I get to have fun fishing remnants out of the tank with magnets on a stick. (Sending unit hole is too small for my hand / arm) Also gonna try lemon juice for cleaning out varnish from the tank.

Also looks like the rollover valves had been “sealed” with black RTV. Nothing but a gooey mess.

Ordered new filler/vent hoses, rollover valves, sending units for this Jeep and my ‘82. The ’82 hoses are in stock, ‘83 and latter are back ordered for 2-3 weeks. Figures, the parts not needed soon are available, the ones I need are not. Oh well. Hopefully the MTS sending units are not rebadged crown / omix ada stuff. The crown unit in my ‘82 did not even last 5 years.

Also learned my lesson, ALWAYS fully clean the fuel system back to front on ALL newly acquired Jeeps! Don’t be lazy, the tank must be dropped!

Got my Sniper a new tank and intank pump. When I dropped my old poly tank I knew that was best.

They 100% are rebadged. In my experience, 2/3 are DOA. Common problems include internal grounding and resistance readings all over the place. Buy 2 or 3 to be sure you get a working one, and return the rest. Even the modded ones that Novak sells with internal pumps attached are MTS/Omix crap, I had to return two of those as well.

Thanks for the heads up.

I ordered 2, so hopefully one will be good. I’ll have to thoroughly test them with an ohm meter before installing.

Shame nobody can make a decent sending unit. Might need to look at options for a vertical sensor or similar. Been looking at the tanks inc versions. https://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=346/mode=prod/prd346.htm

My Holley in-tank pump came with the sending unit. It has worked well for a year now. Works perfectly with my Holley Sniper. 58 psi, self- regulated, but I would think it could be externally regulated to 7 - 14 psi for a carbie if needs be.

20 gallon tank or 15?

15 unfortunately. One day i plan a 32 but I'll weld in the 15 gallon sender receiver so i can keep using my Holley pump.

You'd basically have to do an external pump with that, correct? Not you necessarily, but for high pressure applications?

Looks like an awesome alternative to the typical aftermarket junk.
