IAFFCJ 81 Scrambler

All of those problems including the side marker light is why I chose to use the Savvy lights instead of insetting some stock housings into the body.

the savvy lights were defiantly considered and i probably wouldn't do another one like this, however $20 replacement light when i break them is a plus.

A while back I added a ruff stuff diff cover to the front Dana 60 on the scrambler. Once I had done this I was able to fill the diff with fluid and I thought that I was done with the front axle. Well the axle gods had other plans and it started leaking out the passenger side axle housing. Dang it looks like I need to replace the inner axle seals. I wan't looking forward to this but JeeperDD was coning up to give me a hand and suggested we tackle it together today.

First hurdle the axle shafts wouldn't come out. once we got them moving figured out why. The axles last life was in a mud race truck and there is a lot of proof that it was used as such.

Once we go the inner seals out it wasn't surprising that they were leaking. Also packed full of Virginia red clay.

Lots of work to get to a $7 seal. Lets hope this fixes the leak and we don't have to do this again for a long time.

Huge thanks to JeeperDD and to Mrs. JeeperDD for waking him up this morning to beat the traffic.

After getting the axle taken care of we attempted to adjust the cable shifters on the atlas. Low range seems to work just fine but we were not able to get anything to shift to high range. Thinking that it may work better if we started everything and let the transmission spin as Atlas are syncroed we tried that and what the heck wouldn't start. This started a series of trouble shooting and we determined that the fuel pump was bad. Pump has had less than 5 gal of fuel run though it and its already junk, that's a bummer.

So ordered a new pump and made a replacement claim so hoping I end up with 2 so I can carry a spare, that way it will never fail again.

Never did get the cable shifters adjusted but solid day for sure.

Definitely a productive day! The "Chop Shop" even showed up for a little bit. Should have gotten a picture of him trying to stash a piece of heavy duty DOM steering tube in his pants. :p

Good point I should go check my steel pile now that he’s gone. ?

Wow, that's a lot of dirt. It's amazing the oil could leak through all that dried dirt.

James said he was stopping by to gaze at this wonderful build. He made no mention of needing any tubing though. Sneaky.

I miss “Jim’s Chop Shop” posts here only almost as much as I miss Eric’s (Jersey’s)... good folks both

Maybe James will be back once the forum software is changed and the mobile interface is more friendly. I tried to confince him it was not bad and just took a little bit to get used to. The picture posting is the least friendly aspect.

Was that an internal or external fuel pump?

External Walbro GSL392 Same one I have been running on my 7 for 3 years now without an issue. Guess it was just my turn to have fuel pump problems. There will be a spare all set up to go right in in my trail box for sure.

I really like that TanksInc in tank pump I put in my Green Scrambler, coupled with an already plumbed/wired/mounted external fuel pump, best of both worlds  :twocents:

Looking good

Replacement fuel pump arrived today. Installed the pump and a new fuel pressure gauge and with 2 turns of the key had 60 PSI at the rail and she fired right back up. And now i have a pressure gauge to make faster determinations as to fuel problems.

Trying something a little different that i have done in the past to keep the gear oil in. Ordered a Lube Locker gasket. Seems to be pretty nice, much faster to install and less mess. Time will tell if it was the right choice.

Also added some paint to the knobs for the transfer case shifters. There are some pretty nice ones you can get from advanced adapters but they kind of pricey so I added some paint came out OK may need some more work but look much better than without the paint.

I also did the adjustment set up for the cable shifter set up on my atlas. Followed all the directions and it shifts into low range great but dosen't seem to shift into high range. I have done a bunch of adjusting to try and get it to and still no luck. I am leaning to that it needs driveshafts so gears are moving and maybe that will help. I'm going to just let that be the answer right now and once driveshafts come in ill reevaluate.

Getting close and realized i still had no winch on the font of this. I picked up a Warn 8274 while at Sand Blast 10 and figured it was time to get to making it new again.

Have no controller but I hooked a set of jumper cables up to the motor and made it run forward but wouldn't go in reverse. I also wasn't having any luck getting the solenoids to work. Will need a little more testing as there was a brush that was off kilter when i got it pulled apart. Solenoids are pretty rusty and I think I may have some new ones sitting around.

So I started pulling things apart. I am not sure the entire history of this winch but it must have lived part of its life in a theft prone area. Mounting bolts welded to mount and nuts what looks like JB welded to bolts. Took some work for sure to get it off the mount.

Got everything blown apart and started cleaning up parts. Seems to be in fairly good shape inside. Just need to figure out if i need new solenoids and I should be able to get a rebuild kit, and some paint and we will be in business. Also going to need some new stickers for a Jeep SE winch I know I saw them for sale somewhere but can't remember now where that was.

Managed to get the winch all put back together. I needed a remote and the motor was iffy, I think I could have cleaned it up and it would have been fine but I found a deal on a new 6hp (up from 2.5hp) that I just couldn't turn down. So after a full break down and some time in the parts cleaner some paint a full rebuild kit winch is good to go. Now I have to decide on what rope I am going to put on it. Even hooked up the in cab controls.
