Jeep J10

There's something about #7 that looks right...I'm changing my vote from 5 to #7.

#6 looks great too if you wanted something more subtle.
 
In the spirit of honest feedback I'll offer two things but these are coming from someone who's like Jeff and prefers a clean paint job to any stripes.

First, it's a pet peeve of mine to see any words on a vehicle that didn't come there from the factory, so that goes for things like people putting "rubicon" on non rubicons all the way to SVT on Fords that weren't built as SVTs (I had an SVT Contour and that's where this pet peeve got started ;) ). So if I had to weigh in, I'd be for no words at all in this case or "Jeep" or "J-10". (EDIT: think about the fact that you may have to explain OVER AND OVER to Jeep people about there not being any Renegade J-10, this comes from someone with a Scrambler that's had to explain his Jeep's steering wheel approximately eleventy billion times :) )

Second, if you're set on putting on decals, I'd do stripes (with the word comment from above) but I'd look at ways to use some of the old Jeep/AMC decals like Jeff Scherb did on his Overlander and new LJ. He used the "4 wheel drive" and some other vintage looking (but new vinyl) decals and I thought that was a cool way to pay homage to the heritage.

Just honest feedback, take it or leave it. Most folks ignore me anyways so no one is likely reading any of this anyhoo :crazy:

On the photos, I'm liking the simpler ones in 7 and 8, I think 8 is my favorite, change it out to say "Jeep" though ;)

I totall see where you are coming from with people putting decals on their vehicles to try to present them as something they are not such as the "Rubicon" decals on non-Rubicon Jeeps and "Cobra" decals or badges on non-Cobra Mustangs, or worst of all, "R" decals or emblems on every rice runner out there (even 4-doors).
I really like the look of the "Honcho" package J10's but I didn't want to be a poser and add Honcho decals to a truck that isn't truly a Honcho. If the Jeep were a true collectable and worth more in all original condition I wouldn't change much on it, but due to the fact that it is just a base model and not real desirable I don't feel much guilt in changing it. Most of my changes will be using factory original items that were available on higher end models so it is still "original" in a sense. The idea of the stripes is to add decals that could have conceivably come from the factory and have that early '80's feel to them. I like your idea of just having them say "Jeep" so I may try that to see how it looks (I will post them up when I do). Thanks for the well thought out feedback, I'm mostly a purist at heart too and like to keep things close to original.

I have to agree 100% with big W....

But I understand since I have been on ebay for a straight week looking for an SJ/XJ cherokee "Chief coupe"/stick like a crack Feen....

Started thinking that I could get away with a non chief untill I realized its all or nothing on my addiction.

FYI...I dig #7 now I have seen it.

HAHA or the fake M3 stuff....

No seriously though...I posted and agreed but the older Jeep packages were more on the appearance end anyway so its not a hate crime..

When other fake decal its more rocking the smaller motor/lower performance suspension and pretending were what you are doing is increasing the look of the Jeep...

I am still on board for #7....

Honcho

Besides the Laredo J Truck ...The decals were all just for appearance.

U are dressing up a plain jane truck & covering up a rusty spot and saving the origional paint...which IMO is way better than repainting.

I like #7 the best. Might as well use HONCHO lettering, that's what J Trucks are famous for.

THAT is a very nice truck. After reading this thread I'm longing for one again.
 
Black side trim

I've seen the trim used on 85-88 mostly Pioneer packages.

Trim is very fragile .... Chrome tape in middle similar to Laredo door panels.


I was showing U pics of J20 springs...as don't have to buy a lift to run 32"s.

Just need to find J20 springs....which are free.

I vote you pay homage to the retro look that late 70's to early 80's Jeeps are known for and put some stickers on the thing. I love the bold yellow, orange, brown that AMC would put down the sides of their vehicles. To me, it just represents that era of AMC. It seems that your just going for a period correct custom look and not trying to misrepresent. :twocents:

I had an 83 Cherokee Chief in that same color, it had simple Black stripes which looked good but I removed in favor of a simple three color stripe along the hood bump following that line down the body. Of course the Chief was blacked out on the cab sides and the windows were tinted in a bronze so it didnt look quite so blank. I was happy with it and thought it looked good but really wanted to go with more elaborate scheme, albeit keeping the red/orange/yellow theme, ala the Walker Evans race Dodge of the period.

I , too, dont really care for the use of Renegade as a part of the design, my preference is to leave words out and just do a crisp color splash to break up the lines.

I do like the plan and sure do wish I had kept one or more of my FSJs, my last j10 stepside would be my current scrambler and my dodge if I'd had half a brain
 
Added a set of Marchal fog lights to the rollbar. I'm needing to find the wiring with the correct connectors for the fog lights to the OEM switch. If anyone has it or knows of an old Wagoneer with the fog light wiring let me know!

Thanks for the post. I did see that one but it is too far away to go get and I think shipping would kill the deal. They are common enough I should be able to find one within decent driving distance.
 
Just a little update. I was able to locate an original rear bumper with end caps (same as Scrambler plastic end caps) in perfect condition. The bumper is in great shape but does have some rust staining around the hitch area. These bumpers are rather difficult to find in good shape with no dents or big rust problems, not to mention the end caps. Once I had aquired the bumper it was another problem to find the original mounting brackets for it! It was a mother-bear to get the old bumper off but with enough cuss words it finally came off with no broken bolts or busted knuckles! I took a pic of the new bumper once I got it installed but I hadn't washed it so it looks pretty dirty. It looks worse than it really is in the pic. I also sanded down some of the surface rust on the rear of the bed and around the tail lights and hit it with some primer and a can of the original Almond Beige I had mixed up. All-in-all, the rear of the Jeep looks much better!

Secondly, in regards to the decals, I have been in contact with Phenoix Graphix and they want to replicate the original "Honcho" decals for the '81-'83 J10's as well as the '79-'80 J10's. I have access to an original '81 Honcho that still has it's original decals so Phenoix Graphix has sent me tracing paper and instructions as to exactly what they want. I will be doing a pencil rubbing of the original decals as well as taking measurements and lots of photos to send to them. In exchange they will send me a set of decals for my time. Here is what the '81-'83 Honcho decals look like (basicly my exact truck minus the rollbar. Also looks like a bench seat same as mine):
