Let's be serious for a minute

So does your spouse know how many jeeps or parts you actually own? Also do they know how much they are worth?

My wife is pretty good at prices and knowing rarity of parts but we were talking last night and we know a few people that hide jeeps.

I have multiple locations and even I'm surprised on what I hoarded long ago. I'm just lucky she knows what they belong to but the going joke in my house hold is that my kids will sell it all for a trip to Aruba. 😢

My wife knows what I have and that I have a crap load of parts. What exactly I have, no, just that I have a lot. She also knows that I buy parts and make money on them, which I was doing when we met 25+ years ago.

My wife and I took a ride to an unnamed (but he’s on here) friend’s place yesterday. Met up with another friend (also on here). The discussion, of course went to how many Jeeps we each have around, running and not. My wife said to me later that I was doing alright and didn’t have too many, by comparison. I thought it was fairly humorous, part considering the “collections” I was being compared to.

Luckily Jeeps are just one of my obsessions...er... subjects of interest. So I'm able to play a bit of a shell game between Jeeps and Camaros.

I recommend having multiple obsessions to avoid anyone noticing you have too much of any one item.

I only have 1, a CJ7 and she knows quite a bit about it. She was a Jeep person before we even met. When I started out on my overhauling project, after having it for 35 years at that point, she knew I wanted some upgrades. I purposely didn’t keep track of the spending because I didn’t even want to know about the costs.

Great thread idea :rotfl:

On a serious note though, the issue with collections is the knowledge of what is there. The comment @Scott_P made about scrap is, sadly, all too correct when it comes to dealing with these hoards once we're gone. I have genuinely started taking that into consideration and I'm throwing away a lot of things I would have thrown in the basement. Hell, I just had the shell of the 4wd XJ that I picked the 4wd bits off of hauled off with most of the working 4.0 still in it. I don't have easy storage, but it almost killed me to send it away.

Yep, there are a lot of small parts that are not often needed when stripping a Jeep. Still I have trouble scrapping any Jeep part that is still useable.

Hoarder here, I still have a few odds and ends from my Morris Minor Traveller (Dave would know what one of those is)- fortunately they fit in one box.

I still have some 70/71 Ford Torino parts from a Torino I stripped in 1991. Sold my last Torino 20 years ago. Anybody need some parts? Unfortunately they don't hardly fit in a pickup truck bed.

....I do have most of my small Jeep stuff boxed and boxes labeled - just can't remember what all I have! Should have created an excel spread sheet!

But I also do have a fair amount of stuff that probably should be pitched. I have also scrapped out stuff that killed me....our 1985 Wagoneer went to Jeep heaven after I stripped out the drivetrain. One of my favorite Jeeps, but the rust got the best of it.

However, I do have 2000 XJ for parts and that has come in very handy as my daughter still drives her 2000 XJ. Especially for those gremlin issues that are hard to trouble shoot. I have swapped out a sensor here and there to solve intermittent issues by process of elimination w/o the expense of throwing new parts at it.

I have a shed full of parts (and a few, ok a bunch, of parts under my porch. Good thing my wife knows about James Lupo so she has a benchmark.

Honestly, if I had more space, I would have more Jeeps and more parts. So maybe that is a good thing. Or I would still have that Scrambler carcass I “sold” last year.

Like some of you I am in the process of deep cleaning my hoard of Jeep parts. I have some things that I have never needed so I am sending them down the line. I’m a healthy 46 yr old but life has me thinking. The amount of time I spend messin’ around with old Jeep parts isn’t satisfying anymore and honestly feels like a waste of time. I’d hate for my wife to ever have to deal with all the crap I have hidden in places between two houses. I am fortunate to have an awesome Scrambler that I’ll forever “tinker” with to scratch the itch.

This is a very legit concern that folks need to take into account, good on you for thinking this way.

My mother hoarded so many things in her basement that we were left to move and get rid of and I've since thought about Jeep part friends in that context and what they're putting on their family if something should happen. This is a huge part of why I stopped collecting and started trashing/scrapping (and my stuff doesn't scratch the surface of some folks' collections).

The one thing to consider is that lots of people see dollar signs in those old parts, but once they are gone and family is dealing with it, things are most likely going to scrap/recycling/sold off as a lot for pennies on the dollar if not COST THEM money to get rid of it.
