Local Waggy, considering it, would like some opinions

Not sure of the year, but this big rig has been sitting outside a local shade tree mechanic's shop for several years. Finally went over to take a closer look today to ask questions and snap some pics. Would've gotten one of the VIN, but since temps have elevated, there were some agitated wasps guarding it pretty close. In fact, felt lucky to have escaped without harm. Goes without saying, will be packing heat next trip.

So, what I do know- two-barrel 360, engine looks mostly intact with accessories, a/c, p/s, smog, cruise, etc. Has the original turbine wheels from what I can tell, complete interior - leather, although worn in some places. No broken glass, although the crappy window tint film has wrinkled. So my question is this, is this worth the $1000 the guy is asking? Obviously, I could part it out and recoup the expense, but would rather put it back on the road. Wasn't able to pull back any of the carpets to see what pans look like. The guy even said he'd throw in another 360 (performer intake, no carb) and transmission for an additional $200. That engine also has the full compliment of brackets, compressor and pwr steering pump, etc. Wanted to see what you FSJ experts could see in the images, and what pearls of wisdom or words of caution you might share-

Thanks,
Hoov

And, yes, the cell phone is included :)

And here's some under hood shots, as well as the other 360 he has laying about.

I'm nowhere near an official source of opinion on Jeeps or Waggys, but I'd say that's easily worth the $1200! Looks like a great candidate to get back on the road to me, fwiw. I realize that certain types of rust in certain places could change that opinion, but that's a decent pile of parts at the very least.

Well, hard call. If that was in my area I’d buy it for sure. Probably try to get the package for $1000. Lots of good stuff there, but lots of work. Everything is available too! I would check the frame, they like rusting by the gas tank. Also check front corners below a-pillars.
There’s a lot of acreage on those, makes restoring a CJ look easy.

If you buy it and need parts, or just want to flip it, there is a shop in Columbus, TX that specializes in them.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Yep, I'm sorely tempted, especially given how intact it is. And the fact that it's two nearly complete 360's.... But Randy drives the big point home- that waggy is a staggering amount of real estate when it come to thinking through a restoration, or even a refurb at minimum. Even looking at how 'full' the engine compartment is gives me slight pause, and that's the easy stuff. However, I'm glad to know there are waggy resources available, even if they are 10 hours away! Appreciate the heads up on that, Ag4Ever. Like 93, I'm thinking the parts alone make it worth it, just trying to get my head wrapped how the process would play out.

The seller has been collecting all sort of vehicles, and kick myself for not introducing myself quicker - . He has a 68 bronco in the shop (302), and another just killing grass outside. Not to mention a nice collection of CJ5's, sadly just sitting in the weather on flattened tires, most without engines. And, even more tragic, he also has terminal cancer. His kids have little interest in the vehicles and will likely scrap them by his assertion.
Here's a few of the fives he has- No scramblers, unfortunately. Even a Scout II in there as well.

Taking a moment to envision the potential response from the wife-unit.

That was truly terrifying. But I like the way you think, Barry. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
If you want to talk about the Waggy, give me a call during the day.
I’d be all over that Scout- that looks like a good project.

A Waggy showed up within a few hours of me, with a donor Silverado. For $3k. Tempted but Ive got too much going already.

On the Waggy- figure full paint. New wood grain decals and trim. All weather strips. New carpet kit, upholstery repair, probably headliner recovering, and then seeing if the wiring is intact. Rebuild one of the 360’s, maybe the trans, new seals in the axles...have I scared you yet? And- while all the parts are available, they’re not cheap and easy like a lot of the stuff for CJ’s. And way too many of them got crushed during cash for clunkers, so they aren’t easy to find in junkyards Here’s a catalog to look through -

These guys have a ton of stuff. You can look through and get an idea of prices. I sold all of my “full overhaul” FSJ’s because I realized they were just too much time and money. I’ll hopefully have another some day, but I’m going to start with something fairly decent.

Good luck!
(Get the scout)(hint hint)

I have a friend down here with a few Scouts. They are really cool. He had the time and energy to do 2 fantastic ones. That one looks good. Get the Bronco also. :)

I would buy that scout way before the waggy. That is a sweet project and excellent sheetmetal.

Did you just use "Scout" and "excellent sheetmetal" in the same sentence? No, it was in fact two; but same sentiment...

I'm somehow, maybe, starting to get the 'vibe' that I should be asking about the Scout.... :D. Not sure if that's up for sale, but will certainly ask. It's a sweet vehicle. Given the current health condition, I'm betting he would be willing to put a price tag on anything he has, but betting the Scout would take more than $1200. Thanks for all the feedback and thoughts on this. I'll be heading out there again to talk with the seller next week, inquire and take a few more pictures (broncos as well). Anticipating bigger and meaner wasps, too.

Take some pictures of the CJ5's, too. They still look fairly "solid"???

Calling Dennis! Hey Stump Jumper- you had/still have a really sweet Scout, don’t you? Give Hoover some inspirational pics!

I’ve got an IH parts guy somewhere local here...

For those interested in seeing more angles of the 5's, here are the rest of the images I took the other day. In no way am I skilled in differentiating between the different models, but the greenish one looks military- is that a snorkel provision on the passenger side hood? (Image 2978 next post) And IF I had one to pick that I'd like to have, it would be that copper colored one. That's a cool little rig. Where's SKT......
