My old 1981 SCRAMBLER returns 25 years later

The latest mod, yesterday, was moving the front Speakers and CB. The speakers were in my Half doors. So they pointed at your leg........not that effective......and they were gone when I had no doors and when the full doors were on. The CB was in my center counsel, which worked fine, just a pain to adjust. Since I now have the in cab cage I moved stuff around. The CB was a basic center mount on the overhead. The speakers took a little thinking. I ended up cutting apart a TJ sound bar and making it fit in two pieces to the top of my cage.

Lost 2nd and overdrive in the Scrambler :(:(

The 700r4 just isn't up to my use, this was the best run in a while. ...........and it was only 7,000 miles :(:(

And they don't make any better parts for it............

Not sure what to go with next.......

Are you running the dunes in high range, I noticed my 700r4 behind a TBI 350 did not like continuous high range usage in the dunes, even though it was funner

Is the same transmission guy that built this one the same as the T400 in the CJ-7?

Yup, high range most of the time. The low range in the Dana 300 can't take the rpms of the speed I run. At about 35-45 mph the low range gears start screaming LET ME OUT!!!!!! And it's not uncommon for me to run 55-65 MPH.........

I can't really complain, I know I'm pushing it right to the limits. And it has had a lot of miles in the sand and off road. Heck, there was one week last summer on vacation I ran 300 miles in the dunes................

Must be a different one, I don't have a cj7.

The guy I have has built lots of these, That's all he did for several years, and he is meticulous. A couple of failures I had were bad parts. The first was a failed convertor (10 years and 40K of off road) One a bearing race came apart. And the next was a wideband that had bad spot welds. But every time it's been apart the band has been very wore, been hot, or both.

I'm thinking 4l80........But

Heavier
sucks more power
longer
needs a controller or Dominator
Not sure about Dana 300 fitting
Both street driveshaft's have to change
Both off road driveshaft's have to change
Crossmember
skid plates...........

Yah, a lot to change

There is always the Atlas "IV". Could be less expensive and gives a wide band of Ratios forRoad, Dunes, Rocks and Trails.

Atlas is tooooo long...........but a Stak or a Hero would fit. I've considered both of them...........

Too long? I have a 4l80E and an Atlas and I have no problems.....

That's what I'm running in my new one with a Turbo 400

It would physically fit. but right now with the longer snout on the 14 bolt, and the motor moved back for balance. The rear driveshaft is 28". That puts the cv at the tcase end about 36 degrees when I'm airborne. .......which happens on a regular basis.

I think I can deal with the transmission length, but not a 4 speed.

Does anyone know if the Dana 300 will clear a 4l80e?

Found some curved friction material in the transmission pan, ironically it was the part that said "heavy duty "

Since the transmission is out, and I can't leave well enough alone.....................and my front axle would pop out of low range on long down hill runs.........

I started reading and figuring out air shift for my Dana 300. everyone that I read had done a np205. and they had taken out the shift detents. I didn't like that idea because they have to have air pressure all the time to hold them in gear. I wanted to leave my detents so if my air system is dead I could still run it with "pry bar shift"....So... I did a little high tech figuring with a scale on my twin stick to figure out how much pull it took to shift. Figured out the leverage, did the math, did more math, found out I needed roughly a 1" piston air cylinder. found some 1 1/16" bore on eBay and bought them. The travel on my shift forks is 7/16" and my cylinders are 1/2". So they have to be limited so the shift forks aren't riding on the wear pads all the time. Not a big deal, just a stop nut on the rod of the cylinder.

I finally got a bracket tacked up and did some testing today.....Seems to work great!!!!!!

and if it works a video

:woot: :woot:

Sorry, I don't remember the particulars of your build.
What will you be using for your air supply?

I've got a small ARB compressor that I run for my air lockers, I'm going to tie into that system
