Never Ending Scrambler Build

I had a hitch mounted to the front of mine when I got it too. The PO used it for a portable winch mount so he could move the hydraulically driven winch from front to rear. Sometimes folks put those receiver tubes up front so they can move a trailer into tight spots instead of backing it in. They're useful but in my opinion they look odd up front. The rest of the bumper looks nice though.

When I bought the bumper from another member I was thinking like you are about a portable winch. But after having it on the jeep I've been starting to have second thoughts. I may cut the hitch flush with the front and weld in a plate to make the front look like a normal bumper. I'm a little leary of removing the entire hitch (part behind bumper) and weakening the bumper.

Those front mounted receivers are awesome for moving trailers, or for using your winch to pull a vehicle up onto a trailer. Cut it flush and redrill for the pin on the back side of the bumper. You can use it for a temp front license plate mount too!

That's a interesting idea. Would be the best of both worlds. Look good and be functional. :headbang:

The hitch portion only sticks out around a inch on the back side, not enough to put a hitch pin. When I get the time may have a guy who does my heavy welding extend that portion another 2". Then I can cut the front flush with the rest of the bumper.

IMG_0243.jpgIMG_0244.jpgIMG_0245.jpgIMG_0250.jpgIMG_0251.jpgGoing to bounce between the cj7, cj8 and 2 work trucks this winter. Replaced the proportionate valve on the cj7 and went to mock up the flares on the cj8 today. They aren't matching up on the scrambler like the pics I've seen. Not crazy about the front flares extending over the bottom front of the tub. I've seen pics of these flares and it was only suppose to be around 2" that would be trimmed (if I chose to). These would be around 5 to 6 inches. These were the rugged ridge flares (6 inch). If anyone knows If I ordered the wrong set please let me know. Looks like I'll be going toward the stock style.

Since these flares aren't going to work (without cutting the fenders and tub) I decided to see if I could strip off the paint on the original flares (previous owner painted black then painted some blue that's pealing). Lacquer thinner did nothing. Ended up using paint stripper. They came out good except the color faded to a chalk-e gray-black. Surfjeepzx is looking up the part # on his (Thanks Surfjeepzx) since it look oem I won't have to cut the body. After all the work on the tub I would hate to do major cutting.IMG_0254.jpgIMG_0255.jpgIMG_0256.jpg I could paint them flat black but I'd rather not have to worry about flex cracks.

Sorry about the extra pic. Replacing the dash, speedo cluster (speed hut:woot: finally a speedo that works), reconfigure the heater ducts, Shut off valve for heater, and new sending unit. Lot of work, but will be worth it in the long run. Be working on both jeep (bouncing back and force) to get things going.

Finished the wiring for the speedhut fuel sending unit. New flares came in so installed them. Flare holes were pretty close. A few were off a hair, not bad considering the years of production of the cj8IMAG2164.jpgIMAG2165.jpgIMAG2166.jpgIMAG2167.jpg

Installed the mirrors that I got from Jersey (thanks Jersey). Starting to look sharp. Waiting for sealant for the sending unit so I can remount the fuel tank. Hopefully by the weekend I'll get the drag link and the dash (dash for cj7). Also need to jack the cj8 up and find out why the brake pedal only moves about 2" and stops (feels like it has the brakes locked). May have adjusted the rear shoes too tight or had a brain fart and put the adjusters on the wrong sides. Jeep is on rollers, so don't know when it would have rolled enough to engage the adjusters.IMAG2168.jpgIMAG2169.jpg

Slide your stinger in and see where the pin hole is. It just might work as-is, you're not really relying on the pin for a lot on the front, and it sure won't pull through the bumper.

Hey Jammer I think you posted some pics in my thread by mistake. These two below: maybe a mod can move them over here for you.

Anywho... Glad you went with the stock style flares, some things just look good the way they are on the Scrambler. I like the way you made an access door for the fuel tank too. That would come in handy if you decided to run an intank pump.

Had as they say a brain fart and posted on another tread so here's basically what's happened since. Pulled the fuel tank to install a speedhut fuel sending unit. IMG_0272.jpgIMG_0263.jpgIMG_0262.jpg

The sending unit needs a 12v ign. source of power. Ended up stringing a 12v wire to the fuse block in the engine compartment.IMG_0271.jpgIMG_0268.jpg
The fuel tank is completed and installed. Now to move onto other projects with the cj8 and try to get the cj7 up and running.

Pulled the door strikers off the original tub along with another set I have. Sanded the rust then let them sit in OSPHO acid to remove the rest. Cleaned and degreased, ready for primer and paint. Also cleaned up the sun visors and mounted them.IMAG2219.jpgIMAG2220.jpg

If I'm reading this right it might work. If the shaft of the hitch's hole would get to the rear part of the bumper (enough to drill a 3/8" hole), I could install a grade 8 bolt for a hitch pin. Not going to use it to be towed by.P1090556_edited-2.jpg

Correct. Although a 1/2 or 5/8 hole would be better if you had room. Some stingers have longer shanks than others.

IMAG2226.jpgIMAG2227.jpgIMAG2228.jpgIMAG2229.jpgIMAG2232.jpg Went to fastenal and got some stainless steel nuts and bolts for use on the cj8 and cj7. Also got the strikers epoxy primed and painted. Just doing little items on the cj8, more time being spent on getting the wiring and dash ready for the cj7. Hopefully will have the speedo on monday.
