Wow normally this much bashing is limited to PBB but since I found this forum I will pop back in to keep you guys updated on the progress of my sad attampt at building a CJ8...
So to answer a few of your questions.
1) Building without all the fancy tools: Yes people do it all the time, we get thousands upon thousands of emails every week from people who build amazing projects with as much as a welder in their garage. I find it somewhat hypocritical of us to build a "budget" truck like the bottom drawer buggy, or the Samurai and yet use over 15K worth of shop equipment to do it.
2) The frame and body: OK, the TDK frame was less than 2500 bucks, there is no way you could build a frame that good for the price of the steel and a welder for 2500 bucks I don't care how you add it up it doesn't happen. The body sure it was like 4K but come on, I looked for a good used Scrambler and any one of them with a bood solid body was selling for way more than 4K and that would not have included any time or money we put into getting a high end magazine cover quality paint job.
4) Money into the rig....out the door honestly this truck will probably have just under 25K in it. Is that alot, sure it is. But what will it be. A one of a kind CJ8 with custom axles, body work, and suspension. Capable of hitting any trail you throw it at, plus looks good enough to turn heads and capture the cover a magazine. Go out into you shop...add up all your tools and be honest. I know in my personal shop I have close to 50K in tools and equipment and I owned all of that before I started working at Xtreme. Plus I am not even counting the 20-30K in the building I built and added onto many times over the years.
I know that this type of project is not everyones cup of tea, but think of it this way. Take stuff from this build you like and add it to your truck. Like the 14 bolt axle most guys would never tackle something like that in a small two car garage...why not I just did, or possibly run dual fuel instead of EFI, why there are alot of benefits to it not to mention LP is alot cheaper than gas.
This rant has gone on long enough, I am shooting the Scrambelr show right now and I will get you guys some spy picks tomorrow night of how it looks now that it is going together.
