Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Sweet build! Not sure if you mentioned it but what size tube are you using for the cage? 1.75?
I'm working on my CJ 6 and have been contemplating using 1.75" but wasn't sure if it was to small a diameter.

Yep, made some good progress. The cage is pretty much built- I still have a ton of finish welding, along with seat belt brackets, seat brackets, gussets, and grab handles. Then there's painting and the flanges to mount the dash plates...

I am using 1 3/4" tubing. Seems just shy of 100' total by now. The more I look at it, the more I don't know about the dimple die plates. Might make it too "busy"...I don't know. Maybe I'll make them and tack them on and see how I like it.

So, here are the pics. Attempted to include as much triangulation as I could without hampering access to the back seats, side windows, ect. Also wanted to make sure my noggin wouldn't get knocked, I'm 6'2" and need my headroom.

Welcome! I'm happy with the 1 3/4" tube. It looked too small when I was keeping the stock bar, but it looks perfect on it's own, I think. Lets see some pics of your '6!

Sure like your style Randy. Nice work:)
Is the cage being tired into the frame?

:ZZZ:2w

Not much progress this weekend. helped my son in law convert a Chev pickup from auto to stick. No fun there...but there was alot of family fun stuff too.

I did manage to get the drivers seat mounted, and I made a good start on the passenger fold forward mount.

The passenger seat folds flat on itself, with the hinges in the up position it gives plenty of access to the back seat. I'm using a bear claw latch to keep the seat in the down position, I still have to make brackets for small poly bump stops that keep the seat base from metal-to-metal contact on the rear tubes.

The high temp today was in the high 40's...BRRRR! Supposed to be cold and rainy/snowy all week....I'm not ready for winter yet!

OK...3 versions later I finally have a fold forward passenger seat that fits. works, and clears everything... I'll save the details, but the pictures are pretty self explanatory. I love the PT Cruiser passenger seat- it will fold flat to make a table of sorts, and with the hinge setup it gives ample room to access the rear. Plus it reclines far enough to make a comfortable place to take a nap during lunch hour! :D

Upright and locked-

Table mode-

Folded forward for rear access-

The franken-mechanism. It all clears, though, and is locked in tight by a bear-claw rotary latch.

I'm going to try and finish the grab bars this week after work. Then I get to pull it out and paint it!

Very nice Randy....what center console did you use to make those fit?

Truck

The center console is an old Bestop unit. It's about 8" wide.

I got the passenger's front grab handle built tonight, and the dash uprights. The dash will have 3 separate aluminum panels that are removable independently.

Next is an overhead grab bar, and a couple of corner grab bars.

And tonight, some front upper grab handles.

Randy, I can't tell from the picture but are those upper hand bars turned in...I hope so, I'd hate for somebody to grab there in a roll over situation and that be the outside impact point.

They are angled in. In retrospect, I probably should have angled them more, they're in about 3". I might add a secondary inside bar from the middle of the bar shown to the front hoop. I'm also planning some velcro type handles. I built these with the intention of being used to hoist yourself up and in- they work great for that.

Been a few weeks since my last update. I've been busy getting my $150.00 Trooper driveable. So, with a total of $350.00 invested including tags, I drove it to work today. Seems good on gas, comfortable too. Now that I have a winter driver, back to the Scrambler. OK, Eric, here's the Trooper pic...;)

So, I pulled the cage out of the Scrambler to get the underside welding done, and painting.

Man, that sucker is heavy!

So...any suggestions on paint? My gut tells me to use something easy to touch up, like Hammerite, possibly silver or maybe black. Other choices are the Copper body color, or a contrasting color (I have a quart of metallic dark burgandy that would probably look nice). I have to think about how the cage color looks around the aluminum panels that comprise the dash. Let me know what you think....

I went with tractor/implement paint from Tractor Supply because 1) I'm cheap and 2) the ease of touch up just like you mentioned.

It was easier to decide for me because I had all the armor already painted grey, but I just think anything other than black is good because everyone has a black cage. You have a much better looking Scrambler with nicer paint, I wouldn't go with the body color in your case.

What about just clearing it for the raw steel look to go with the aluminum panels? Would clear stick?

I don't know about the raw steel... I've seen it in person- many desert race trucks are finished that way. Looks "unfinished" to me.

I'm intrigued with the copper and burgundy look... The burgundy I have is darker than this, looks closer to a black cherry color...
