Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Teaser alert! I'm going to start bending tube this weekend...I have a unique and sturdy cage design planned out... hope it works as well as it looks in my head...:D:crazy:

Time to kick this build into high gear, or I won't be driving until next summer!

OK, I'm back on track! Started on the cage this afternoon. Got the dash structure and front hoop pretty much done...maybe a few gussets here and there, but basically done.

First I built a couple of side/dash brackets...

Then I added a couple of cross bars...

Made sure it cleared the door and window crank...

Then added the hoop...

It hugs the windshield and will just clear the hardtop...

Then I added the feet. They curve up behind the dash plates and are fully welded and gussetted.

So, here's the reason for the dual dash tubes....this is a mock-up of my dash design. The two vertical black stripes will be tubes also, and the dash will be 3 panels that are removable from the front.

More to come tomorrow!

Sweet! How are you going to secure the windshield frame?

Love the way it completely hugs the windshield... looks killer!

Eric- the windshield will have the tabs at the bottom for the 2 bolts on each side, and also two tie ins at the top.

So, a little more progress this afternoon. First I built four floor plates that will bolt into the stock location. A two hour job, wish I hadn't sold my plasma cutter. The front plates had to cantilever out from the stock location and also have a groove to go over the rib in the floor. The outer portion has welded studs that go into a backup plate under the floor.

I am really bad about taking pictures in-process, but here are the results of the day's work. It's a bear getting two hoops exactly the same, especially when they are mounting at an angle. As for the area between the two hoops, can you say "Dimple Die"? I saw the Moab Scrambler pics and love that look. So, I ordered a 1 1/2" Dimple Die. Should be here in a week.

And yes, it should clear the top. The factory bar measures 45" to the top center, my bars are at 44".

Anyone in the market for a nice factory roll bar?

If all goes well I'll start the "C" pillar tomorrow after work.

As usual, everything looks great!

That dash is gonna be awesome!

Inspiration from post #152?

Yep, that's the inspiration. Loved that dash since the first time I saw it. Didn't care for the "Bolt on" ends, or understand the need to crush the tube under the wiper motor, though. I'm sure there will be mods on my design, I'm a bit concerned about clearance at the speedo and tach. I am also doing away with all factory switches and cables, going with Carling switches for all chores, and a "Hot Rod Air" system.

No progress tonite- (New "House" episode and a stereo swap...) I'll probably work on the spreaders tomorrow, save the rear hoop for the weekend seeing as I have to pull the Scrambler out to bend long tube. (Poor stand placement issue on my part- the center of the floor seemed like a good idea at the time...)

Not much progress tonight...bent up two center stringers from the front to center hoop... I figure if I at least do a little every night it will progress faster:D

The start of some seat brackets...

The u-bend in the rear is going to be part of the rear triangulation...

A PABST SIGN!!

A while back I asked the lady at the meat market to give me a couple of the blue ribbon stickers they put on all the meats, the ones that look exactly like the Pabst logo on the can. She ended up giving me a whole roll. Everything I own now has a tribute to PBR on it...

Randy,

Someday I hope to be able to bend tubing that well. Your cage is looking great.

Thanks for the compliment. It's funny- I got the Bend Tech 3d program, thinking it would make things easy. My brain doesn't seem to work in a compatible mode.... so I just measure and spend time drawing outlines on the floor, and doing it the old fashioned way.

I got the rear hoop bent up today...what a pain. Ended up remounting the bender for a couple of bends- I needed it to bend vertical instead of horizontal. Thank God I made the bender stand with a 2X2 mount like a trailer hitch. Came out good, pics will be posted tomorrow.

Well, in between the yard work and bumper building for my Boss, I managed to get the cage together to the point of looking "good". I still have to consider triangulating the rear sides, triangulate the rear upper, and build outer stringers for the front. Also seat mounts. So....I definitely won't post this up on Pirate... but I hope you guys like it. A question- I was going to cover the double hoop with dimple die sheet, but I'm liking the look as-is... What do you think?

I think the dimple sheets could be cool. Hard to imaging what you've got planned to know what it would look like.

Sorta hard to see but this is the best pic I have, except for the ones in JP.

Do the dimple die between the cross-braces, then go solid over the curved part, and then dimple die over the top.

Very cool looking cage, Randy!

I especially like the angle of the rear hoop. Another vote here for the dimpled sheetmetal :D

Man, I've got to get to work.
Y'all are makin me look like a slacker.
