Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

This thread has saved me so much work and I want to thank you very much for posting it. I am doing the same build but mine is a cj 7 (I'll get an 8 someday) I am at the starting point with mine, got another frame and prepping it now. My 5.3/4L60 is out of an 01 yukon. Can you give me some details on your motor mounts? It would save me a ton of work. I know you used the MORE units. Do they come with holes in them to mount to the frame (if so did you use those in any of the stock frame holes)? If I knew how/where you placed them on the frame and the details of you conversion plates it would save me from pulling the body on my running cj to do the setup. I am not runnig a/c. Is your motor still offset to the driverside as I know with these mounts that is how they are set up? I hate to bother you at this stage of your build. You mentioned selling the conversion plates awhile back, if you are i would be interested just so I know I would get it right the first time. Also looking for the same set of exhaust manifolds if you know of any. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Also where can I find you on ebay? Thanks again, dave

Thanks for the compliments! On the motor mounts I used the stock MORE mounts and then welded/bolted on the homemade adapter plates. The MORE mounts bolted up to the stock location on the frame, but on the passenger side I used a 1/4" spacer between both the top and the side of the frame and the MORE mount- this was to adjust for a frame and possible mount issue that caused the motor to sit lower on the pass side. You may not need to do this. I both bolted and then welded the More towers to the frame. This ended up positioning the motor dead center in the frame. Both exhaust and steering clearances are good. I have plenty of room between the motor and the firewall, but the AC compressor dictated how far I could move the motor back with the MORE mounts. Without the AC compressor I could have gotten at least another inch back. Here's a plan of the mount adapters that should work perfectly without the AC compressor-

This drawing has one error- the countersunk hole should be the one to the left of the one indicated, or simply drill another hole in the MORE bracket and use a longer through bolt.

I used a modified version of this plan- actually mine places the mount closer to the one above.

My final version-

I have no immediate plans of making these at this time. Someday...but first I need to get the Scrambler running, by summer I hope.

Here's a link to a current Ebay auction for the manifolds- $49.99 for a pair.

I think the exact application is Corvette LS2 2006.

I'm excited about the color too, H2_recovery. I'm hoping I'll be able to find a way to afford getting it painted before I get much further in reassembly. Still working on finishing touches on the cage, and waiting for parts.

I did find a set of my all time favorite wheels for super cheap- Centerline HT's. I've wanted a set of these from the first time I saw them on a desert racer... and EBay provided last week with a set for $50.00:eek: So now I have 3 sets of wheels...

nice Randy, very nice!! I lov the wheels, they are my favorites too and I'm kicking myself for not stealing mine back off my son's jeep before it went to the east coast...... I guess I need to start looking at ebay, that's a heck of a deal!

Thanks for the motor mount info, that helps me a ton. Got my exhaust manifols yesterday. Should get frame back frome blaster Friday and then I can really get rolling. Workin on the cage in the meantime. Thanks for all your help and I'm watching this thread like a hawk! I wish our stuff here was half as rust free as your stuff there.

Little more progress this weekend. (when I wasn't watching my team lose... :banghead:)

Started building the switch box...

And welded in a brace in the center, with a captured nut, and covered that too. The dome light will reside under here, and the threaded insert will make lifting the cage in and out so much easier...

I mentioned installing seat belt brackets...I used sleeves out of an old TJ bar...

A plate for the lower mount, and a nut welded to a channel, welded to the seat bar for the free end...

And they work great!

And to confirm I'm either obsessive/compulsive, or just a plain old hoarder, I got ANOTHER set of wheels! They were so cheap I couldn't pass them up (basically scrap weight price). They might end up on the Waggy, although Carol wants a set of my Bullet wheels. We'll see...

And yes, that's fresh snow out there...

Geeeze, how many sets of wheels does that make now!! I'd be happy with one set. Since I am now going 6 lug I have no wheels yet. Do you run 15's or 16's. Everyone talks about 16's when going six lug? I hope 15's are not a problem on the waggy axles as my 35" bfg's won't fit! I love your build and work. When you firing that thing up?

That's a grand total of 6 sets of aluminum wheels counting the set currently on the Waggy and the Scrambler. Plus a couple spares. Seems like they are giving them away on Craigslist here lately. There was another set of 15X10 cernterline look-alikes here for $200, and another set like the ones I got today for about $100. I'm running all 15" so far, no clearance problems with the waggy axles whatsoever. Thanks for the compliments. Hopefully I'll be driving her this summer!

Got a quote today from a friend of a friend for powdercoating the cage. Looks like about $250.00, I'm thinking that's a steal, so it's scheduled for next Monday! Going to go with either a high metallic silver gray or a silver that looks like ceramic coated headers. Sort of that polished steel look. Bling Bling!:D

That is a steal to have that big cage coated Randy, hope to see it all shiny soon!

You are the wheel king  If you need other 1/24 scale wheels other than the bullets, let me know so I can check my stash or be on the lookout.

Hey Jeff- yeah, I might need a set of the Centerline style I posted above. :)

I also sold my Swampers today- all 8 of them. Got enough to cover almost 3 BFG Mud Terrain KM2's... going with 35X12.50R15. Little smaller tire, in line with my "more DD friendly" build direction. I'll post up pics as soon as all 4 show up and I have them mounted on the polished Centerlines...

Had to postpone powder coating until next week, had too busy a weekend to get the cage finished.

Hey Randy, I've found these so far in my stash...shown with 35" mud-terrains (old style). They look close except for five-lug bolt pattern, but that's easy enough to fix. Don't have the flutes around the rim either, but I'm still looking. I put a post out on a model kit building site & supposedly there are a few kits out there with the Convo-pros, are they like yours?

And here's how they look on an old eBay gluebomb J10...

Those look great, Jeff! I'm going to be running BFG KM2 mudders, so the tires are pretty close.

Gas tank

Great build!

I'm working on a 5.3/4L60 swap and would love a larger gas tank and run a stock GM pump. I went to Trailquest's site but didn't see that tank you have. Can you provide additional info...measurements, how far below the frame it hangs, and part number?

I recently checked and it is not there anymore. I think the Omix 24 gal tank is the same.

Thanks, finally had time to call and they stop selling those tanks...I'll look into the Omix.

Thanks!

I picked up my new rubber yesterday....35X12.50R15 BFG Mud Terrain KM2's. I love the smell of new tires! I'm going to get the Centerlines polished up and then mount them up.

So...white letter out, or blackwall out? I usually go white out if the lettering looks cool- but something is telling me black out this time. Post up your opinions!

I personally go with black out......I like the white lettering when sitting still, but just does not look right going down the road to me. Plus dont have the problem of keeping it white from off road use.:)

I vote Black out Randy, if you get in the rocks the white seems to get chunked out and then you have sort of morse code on the sidewalls instead of the letters, plus, in my view, the black out on the polished wheels looks more elegant than the polished wheels, whilte letters, black sidewalls, that's too busy for my taste, but then I don't have any contrasting color on my jeep but the top and the alum wheels/tires

Black out on Jeeps for me. I'm going to have to get new tires on the LJ this year and I'm actually thinking of taking a sander or something to the white lettering so it's not on the inside either.

I was sort of thinking about dying the white letters black and mounting them on the outside, but they would probably get chunked up eventually...
