Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Looks like a Dead Guy Ale. Had to get his courage to drill the tub some how!
Doh, you're exactly right, that's one of my favorites and I should have been able to spot that, even that small :banghead:

Yep, that's "Dead Guy". One of my favorites. We have been to the brewery several times- were planning on going again this weekend for the "Brewers Weekend" but the weather is going to be lousy so we canceled out.

I've got the garage mini-fridge full of Dead Guy and Mocha Porter- Costco has it for 24.99 a case!

Yeah, but you have a running Scrambler... I have a beer belly!

Come on out here...I'll share!:cheers::cheers::cheers:

Frustration....

Ever had one of those times when nothing seems to go right? Or what you think are seemingly simple issues turn into major problems? I'm there now...:banghead:

I have been trying to come up with a workable dash plan for over a month now. 6 cardboard failures in the trash. Every time I think I've got it right there's two things that seem to want the same piece of real estate.

So I moved on to the trans shifter setup. The original cable shifter didn't work well enough, and I went through several different mockups this weekend and wasn't happy with any of them. Biggest issue is clearance...by the tunnel, by the driveshaft...:banghead: Adding to the complexity is my wanting to use the new F150 shifter I have. (I really don't care for any of the current aftermarket shifters.) I started a new one earlier this evening...wish me luck, hopefully I'll have some "picture worthy" progress tomorrow.

Thanks for listening to me vent. I realize that this is just "Part of the process", but I'm really wanting to be driving this thing!

Hang in there Randy, you are the inspiration for me (and I am sure many others) as I am in the early stages of a very similar build. What you have done so far is fantastic and I look forward to seeing your build come to completion.

Keep the faith brother!

Truth be told, I'm kinda glad to hear you hit some type of snag because it shows you're human :) I was beginning to wonder with the quality and ease with which you operate  It was approaching crash-like levels! :rotfl:

I know you'll knock the shifter and dash out. Hopefully walking away and coming back will give you the perspective you needed. Have one of those Costco Dead Guys and go to town!

It works!

Well, after last night's frustration I wasn't about to let this thing whip me. I took all the parts to work and got the geometry right. ( I have a very understanding boss...helps that I have built several bumpers for him...)Then I brought the assembly home, fitted it to my spare mock-up tranny, and welded it up. Hooked up the cable and it works! The pictures will explain what I ended up with. It works surprisingly smooth. The pivot rides on lubricated bronze bushings. The threaded rod with the small heim joints made adjustability possible. The pivot allowed me to adjust the throw ratio to match the Ford shifter throw to the Chevy arm. Pictures show the setup on my mock-up trans, it's mounted up in the Scrambler now.

Now on to the dash and console!:D

Thanks. Nothing puts a smile on my face more than knowing that my project provides inspiration for others.

Eric- I kept away from the beverages until I knew it worked...but I did pop the top on a cold one as a celebration when it worked!

The sheer duration of this build should more than attest to my "human-ness"

HOLY GIANT SHIFTER BATMAN! That thing is HUUUUGE!

Nice setup and I love the detail of the bronze bushings  It makes the hack POS tranny linkage I made to make the AW4 work look, well... like a POS. :banghead:

The duration of the build is basically out of your control. I'm talking about how awesome all of the details and little things are (like the bronze bushing touch) with this Scrambler, all those things that you do completely control. And the only reason you don't have a dash yet is because your standards are so high. I'm sure I would have thrown in the towel and gone with one of the discarded ideas because I'm not a master craftsman like yourself

:D

Hey Randy, have you thought about incorporating some of your gauges and dash things into a slanted center console? The consoles that we have in our emergency vehicles are so versital that I am going to go with something similar in my rig when the time comes, except instead of having just a flat piece to mount everything I am going to extend from the dash with a slant mounted unit then from the slant I am going to flatten the console out and mount my tranny shifter and cable shifters for the TC as well as any switches needed. It will kinda look like this:

(forgive the crude drawing, you are way better at this than me)

TX- I'd considered that but abandoned it, I don't like the "closed in" feeling with a full length console. There's some really cool ones like that on the "Custom Dash" thread on Pirate.

Eric- you're probably right that my issues on the dash are an overly retentive need to have it perfect. My most current issues are: where to put the HVAC controls- the best place seems just to the left of the glove box, but is that too far from the driver? And since the glove box can only be 4" deep, should I even bother? Where to integrate cupholders? And lastly- switch and warning light placement. See...I told you I was overly retentive...

Tonight's quickie project was the intermediate shaft. It's made up from the upper part of a Cherokee shaft (Since I'm using a Cherokee column), a cut to length piece of 3/4" double D shaft, and a Flaming River stainless lower joint. Using the Cherokee upper also gets me an integrated vibration isolator. I'm going to tap the DD shaft in the locations where the nylon pins were on the Cherokee shaft and install 4 short screws- that will keep the column properly secured but still allow it to collapse for safety.

Here's the pics- plenty of clearance by the frame and exhaust.

Holy Bundle of Wires, Batman!!!!

Truck

Yeah, and they're all necessary! Hope I remember where they all go! (JK, I took good notes:D)

So...tonight's project was simple. The new tail lights made the plastic gas bezel look crappy. Quick solution- add some Bling! One polished stainless bezel, slightly modified, and installed.

I'm trying to make a small bit of progress each night. Might actually get to drive this some day if I keep it up.

This weekends project is not so much fun...the local scrap company dropped off a 4'X6' scrap metal container...time to clear out the side yard. I hope it's big enough...

Randy, It's been my pleasure to follow your progress all these months, while in the process of doing my own frame off restoration on my 81 copper brown metallic CJ 8. I'm sure you'l come up with the right dash soon. I Just thought I'd show you what I came up with for mine. I rearranged all the guages and installed the Vintage A/C system along with a Alpine audio/gps/Nav/Dvd system. Also installed the intrapod center console with amp and speaker with new front speakers mounted in new dash pad. I also intend to install power windows and locks. Keep up the good work, your truly a gifted fabricator. My baby is still my 09' ZR1 vette but my pride and joy is the Scrambler.
As you always say," It's not what you buy, it's what you build".
Dennis

Ps. I'd love to post all 133 rebuid photos but I'm just not that computer literate

Dennis- that looks great! Your dash layout looks very clean and well thought out.

I thought that one picture was taken in your family room...:D

I had contemplated using a lower panel like yours, but my console/shifter limit the visibility.

Power windows and door locks- we think alike. Those are both on my "after it's running" list.

What I'm faced with is finding room for a multitude of items with even less room due to stock because of the uprights. My list includes: 2 tweeters, 4 3" A/C vents, 4 A/C control knobs, speedo, tach, 4 gauges, 7" DVD/Nav unit, 3-5 Carling switches, 6 warning lights, and maybe a glove box or at least a fold down tray/cupholders. Whew. I'm getting closer, and I'll reveal my final design some day soon... hopefully. I'm going back and forth between the console and the dash to keep me fresh.

The last two weekends have been spent cleaning up the yard in preparation for my upcoming move. Never again will I allow myself to accumulate so much junk. I have filled 2- 3 yard steel containers full of misc scrap metal and junk parts. There was even a CJ7 tub and a 55 Willys Wagon rolling frame that got cut up and stuffed in there. Along with junk axles, engine cores... however, not having all that junk around is strangely "freeing".

As You've noticed, I'm sure, I had to give up the glove box. But the new dash pad has enough storage and the new center console made up for the rest. Also my new seats from best buy have netting on the backs. BTW, the vintage air puts out 36degree air before the compressor kicks off, GOOD AND COLD, Important in Lousiana at this time of the year. I was gonna go with a LS1 conversion until I realized that the cj had all the original drive train, so I stayed with the 258 and the 4 speed.

Does anyone here have any input about the power windows and power locks I plan to install, any pros and cons?

Dennis

BTW the, You weren't far off,The picture you mention that looked like my living room is from my 3,500square foot garrage and the wall you see is my house witch is built on another 1500sq ft of the same shop. total sq ft of 5,000....and yes I love it
