SJScrambler - Getting Started

I made a quick stop to CBs this weekend and saw this in person. Very cool start for this project and the best part - absolutely zero rust. Zero. None. :bacon:
 
It was in Vegas, before that in Kansas I think.
Definitely parts and pieces of different tubs... def not a CJ10 and probably was a CJ8 as it has the bulkhead, but the side panels are thicker and hand fabricated.
So, not sure exactly... my YJ tubs weren't good enough for what I wanted to do and then I stumbled on that.

That must be why there's no "Jeep" or "Joop" ahead of the door openings. It would be interesting to find out the history.

I'm glad you got your hands on it though, this is going to be a fun build to watch! :thumbsup:
 
So, last night I got to measuring and leveling and seeing what is what... I wasn't overly impressed when it came down to the end of the night.
I was hoping for a good starting platform, what I have found is what appears to be an early MD Juan front clip with no welded nuts for the dash panel or the hood hold down.

Up front, there are handmade hood rod extensions that push the grille out too far, the Fender holes are just holes, so nutserts are needed.

Then on the backside, it is a bit lopsided and uneven.

Then my drill broke.

Then I had some beer.
New drill will be here Friday, I won't do much until then.

I will be removing the bulkhead and back bracing and will put corners on to close in the bed, I will have to rectify the 57.5" front to back vs. the 56.75". :(

I think your "First, I'm going to have a beer" strategy is the right way to go here... I'm sure it'll all come to you (if not, have another beer)...

So, onto the bulkhead extraction... previous owner like the tack welds and must be heavily invested in silicon... also 2 of the bolts in the bpillar were stripped out, so that was a fun few hours!

I have a new step up piece that I will use to put it back to "stock"ish configuration... you can see how it is reversed from how it normally is.
I am enclosing it, so, new side corners and fab work soon.

So, what do you do when you buy something and it isn't quite right? Cut it of course!

If you notice, the doors are open (both garage and side)... this thing was full of bondo where the transisition to the custom rear piece was and it smoked me out of the garage.
It was like 25 degrees out as well, so not too bad, but didn't last long last night... long day at work and was tired.

I will end up cutting it all out and repairing it all with new b pillars and those rear corners... well not THOSE rear corners... they aren't the best.

Side note... I got a set of Crown and a set of MD Juan ones... the Crown ones are thinner metal and the MD Juan are thicker, but the bends on the top aren't even comparable.
I will get a side by side comparison, but man, things are quite different from one to the other.

Craig, that looks awesome. Hurry up and finish it, we want to see it done NOW.That does look like its going to be a fun build. But really, could you hurry it up a bit. :woohoo:

CB I see it looks like you still have the original rubber around windshield glass, what are you going to use around there when you replace it? And also between the frame and cab body?

Everything I ever bought from MD Juan, Crown or Omix has been junk.

I have 5 or 6 original windshield rubber gaskets I will use those as for the frame and node some 1 inch body mounts from daystar

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this!! Be good inspiration for when I get a start on mine. Right now there's what purports to be a CJ7 and a YJ in the garage. Neither of which is mobile under its own power. Ugh. Two projects. I can't be quite right in the head!
 
Rivnuts? i just reached around and used nuts and bolts when i bolted my fenders on my MD Juan tub, arms like Mr Tickle me:D
