SJScrambler - Getting Started

Progress has slowed a bit with some of the recent purchases of parts... more today as well.

I did order a Kilby skid for it and the other piece of missing steel for the frame lengthening this morning, so I hope to start that when it comes it next week hopefully.

Also trying to land a rough Scrambler back half to use as a mock in place and then also those side panels for filler pieces. We will see.

More next week probably.
Tonight we burn 60+ Christmas trees and drink merrily!

I would consider this to be the point at which there is no return back to normal, and only go to the new promised land... lol.

Seriously, why not cut up a perfectly good frame?
I am also waiting on some cutting discs to finish cutting out the back of the cab to remove all the junk that was in there to go back to the original way.
I will get the cage back in, mock it all up and build out the rear for it... shouldn't be an issue.

With the new length of the frame hopefully done this week, I can start to layout the bed a lot better with all the more room... also need those body mounts for the cab too.

It will have an additional 18" in it for those who were wondering... bed should be right about 6.5 feet long to match what other trucks today have.
It will look like a CJ/Scrambler rear, just more of a bed... thinking doubling up the tubes as well to keep a stock roll bar, but then fill the gap with another... really need to get it together to visualize that one.

I've got one I am planning on extending, too. Haven't decided yet how much to add to the cab and how much to the bed. Anxiously awaiting what you will do. I figured I'd cut the roll bar angles from the hoop and add horizontal 3" tubing to connect. In your case, that would be about 18 inches. I was wondering how the frame would hold up with the extra length and if it needed any extra support. Thanks for sharing this adventure.

I thought about this as well, but the angle change I think is going to hit the wheel well housing, not sure though... again, this is all been thought over and over and drawn in my head.
Although I am a very detail oriented and can see on paper in my head, it isn't until it is sitting in front of you in steel that you appreciate what is there and how it actually looks.

Last night I got the extensions drilled out and edges ground down for good penetrating welds.
I plan on sleeving the frame, butt welding the joint, and plug welding as well... then fish plating the inside... not sure if I need the fish plate on the outside as well or not... wanted more of a clean look if you looked underneath, but I am not going to sacrifice any strength.

As for more support, the bed will certainly require it... I plan on using the rear most cab support now for the bed... and putting a new one on the extension piece to support the cab.

I will take more pictures when I get a chance, but unfortunately posting them doesn't work for me on my phone... so updates are going to be a lot further and far between as I can only update them when I get on a computer.

Progress is coming along... haven't posted much as it has been busy at work and not a lot of time to use the computer.

Trying to figure out how to use the Scrambler top and the pieces I want to use... will need a filler piece.

The biggest issue is the use of the bulkhead vs. when you try to enclose it... the tub was cut to fit the bulkhead, but that is almost 1" longer using that vs. closing it in due to how it mounts and then the filler piece at the top.
I will cut down the corners by 1" as I can't cut the white part as the b pillar is there and I don't want to lose any of it.

I was looking through the Gaucho build and Jscherb made a custom hard top that filled the gap down... I am probably going to find a very rust bulkhead and use the top 4-5 inches of it and use that to fill into the back panel I make so I can use this top as I like the stock rear slider.

It is all measure 15x and cut once and then not really know much until you put all the bits in place to see where the shortcomings are.
I had to use the white b pillars as the ones that were in there were very thick metal/custom... unfortunately they didn't line up, but also I didn't have enough material so I will have to make filler pieces.

It will get there eventually.

I have pictures, but haven't really had time to post any up.

I have started on the rear section of the cab close out, needs more welding.
I acquired a very tired/beat up Scrambler tub for dimensional calculations for the rear bed.
I have ordered some new parts as well... I am mostly ready to start back on it.

I also have a 1984 CJ7 and a 1979 CJ5 sitting in the driveway that need to be torn down and parts sold off... that is what I am currently working on along with yardwork and kid stuff.
I haven't got a ton of time lately... sadly.

Big changes coming this week... finally moving the Jeeps into their hibernation positions and going to be taking the tub off to work on it and the 6 cyl is out and a 304 is being built to go in... more pictures will come in the following weeks as we progress.

Great work on the Jeep. Just sold my Kubota L2250 last year. Man I miss that thing.
 
A couple more pictures from last night... putting the Jeeps to bed for the winter sadly... but also getting the tub off and other parts/pieces working on the Truck... getting the shop ready to start really working on this finally.
