Switching from CB to GMRS radios

FWIW, I was resisting getting a gmrs license as I am studying for my ham license which covers better frequencies. But with recent ham radio licensing changes the cost for the gmrs license dropped from $70 to $35, so there really is no excuse not to get it 👍

I was on the FCC site trying to get the license via CORES and they seem to be charging $70... I probably made a mistake answering one of the exemption questions or something.

I ran into the same thing today..........I wonder when the new fees are supposed to take effect?

I've have my gmrs license already, but I'm also studying for my technician license and hopefully my general on same day.

There are multiple reports that the fee change has not yet gone into effect and that there’s some other red tape that has to be cleared first.

GreatCJ8,
Where can I find the info that says a HAM license covers GMRS and FRS? I have held a Technician Amateur license for almost 30 years and I’ve never heard of that, but I like the sound of it!!

I believe your are correct HAM does not cover GMRS or FRS. It is a separate license. If you want to know more you can get really good information from arrl.org They have charts that show what Freq. HAM can operate on. I am also a HAM (Extra Class) also have my GMRS license.

So, how many of us are Amateur Radio Operators?

Technician License here, since 2007.

Been thinking about upgrading to General, but my main use is radio controlled aircraft and videos gear, so no real need for the upgrade with the frequencies I utilize. Heck, with the new drones out today, I hardly even use my Amateur License. (Except I do use it for bow hunting with my Pro-Tracker deer tracking system.)

I have had my Call Sign in my signature the whole time.

Yeah, you are correct. I think I went with the train of thought that having the ham would open better frequencies so I would forego getting the gmrs lic. But with the cost going to 35 for gmrs why the heck not 🤷

I'm beginning to think that $35 lic. is just a mith and just bs. What would be the reason they would lower the cost of anything ? They need every copper they can get their fingers on.

Whole lotta free stuff coming down the pike to pay for; a cost cut does seem a bit anathema to the pattern.

That “myth” has been around for a year. I was waiting for it before paying, but went ahead and paid the $70 in February since I got my GMRS unit last Christmas

I will call in to the podcast and ask (y)
