Who are you using to insure your CJs?

We are in the process of switching insurance carriers due to continually escalating rates because we have.
so many vehicles and several young drivers. We don't own anything fancy (most expensive is my wife's 2023 Kia Telluride) but we have more vehicles than drivers with 4 kids ages 17-22.

We had been with Erie Insurance for 30 years. They insured my Jeeps without issue during that time. 1981 CJ8 and 1978 CJ7 in the past but CJ8 no longer insured since I've been "restoring" it for the past 10+ years! I did pick up a 1984 CJ7 a few years ago. Jeeps are driven less than 200 miles per year and only from May-October. Jeeps have mild upgrades but nothing crazy. I value them at $10k each.

Switching to All State and saving $4k per year despite adding a 17year old to the policy. However, they won't insure my 1978 CJ7 due to its age. They recommend Hagerty. Hagerty wants $500/year and is excluding my 19year old son from driving it since he had one accident in the past.

I just want basic liability coverage. Would have no issue with limiting annual miles or restricting use to certain months of the year. Any suggestions?

Isn’t insurance fun ! I’ve had Allstate for decades with just liability. Years ago i added it up and figured I purchased my Jeep several times over with those payments.

Have Hagerty on my toys. (84 CJ-8, 46 CJ-2a, & 91 Mini Cooper)
You pick the value that they pay in event of total loss. (price reflects coverage)
For all 3, I'm paying $1100 ish Canadian a year for all 3.

Hagerty on my '8. American Classic didn't want to do it as I only have the Tahoe as a regular vehicle and they wanted to know what I would drive if the Tahoe was down... So, went to Hagerty...

I use Farm Bureau, liability only. No restrictions on mileage or use. When the guy in MI pulled out in front of me and I hit him, I didn't get any grief about driving it to Michigan :rotfl:

But, I only have liability on my Scramblers and 7's :twocents:

I have full coverage on mine... Hagerty has "guaranteed agreed value" or whatever it's called. If it's a total loss you get that value. Hagerty knows it's not stock.

I was always curious if one of these policies would cover mine, due to the mileage I put on them, off road use, and modifications

Like when I got in an accident 1,000 miles from home in Michigan

They don't like off-road... mine is just a pavement princess in their books. mileage and mods are not an issue.

California is working on the ‘Leno Law’ that exempts vehicles over 35 year old from having to be smogged. My understanding is it has to be insured as a ‘classic vehicle’. Has anyone insured theirs as classic? Also read they are working to get it changed to any vehicle over 35

Hagerty did the same for me with an agreed value policy. They asked about off-road use, where I store it, and mileage. Mine is a pavement princess unfortunately so no issues there. Hagerty was easy to deal with if you want to just call and ask for details or quote.

I use Hagerty but mine is mostly a street queen except for scenic runs and camping trips. Very easy to deal with.

Until they decide it's not, which will be when you need it.

I always say the same thing to every one of these threads. Just because they write the policy does NOT mean that you're insured when it's needed.

It's on you to disclose, not for them to discover. Burn that in your brain. That means that you'd better read and understand every bit of fine print, every restriction, every nuance that they could use to weasle out of actually paying. The fact that they'll agree to take your money means nothing.

Does it mean that they absolutely will not pay? No. But I rank insurance companies right there with lawyers, Collins Brothers, and ticks.

Understand the restrictions with classic registration and insurance. Being CA, I wouldn't be the LEAST bit surprised if this isn't a play to try to then restrict anyting over 35 years old from driving more than XXX miles a year or some such thing. They'll bill it as a great thing to avoid smog but then use it to try to keep any of these cars off the road as much as possible.

I tried to get mine through Hagerty recently and they would not touch it.
