Spankrjs' 1984 Long Term Project

I cant wait to sling some mud with them!!! Since they don't make "real" Buck Shots anymore, or the good old "Co-Op Grip Spurs", this might be a suitable, inexpensive, aggressive mud tire option.

Anybody know when they discontinued the Grip Spurs? Guy south of Little Rock has a set of 4 that are about 95% for sale. 7.00x15 (how big is that? I though the L78 was the 31") He wants $300 for them, and says they've been stored indoors so they aren't dryrotted. Just wondering how old they would be at a minimum.....

Of course, I just dropped $$$ on a set of KM2's for Dad's Scrambler so I have pretty new BFG's on all three Jeeps now. Stuff like this always pops up AFTER I just bought something.

When I was a senior in high school, 1995, my buddy had a new set of Grip Spurs. I searched the internet, I want to say they made them into the early 2000's, you MIGHT find a new set at a Co-Op

Yep, that's how I found out the tires that were on this Scrambler were brand new, from the 1990's

The poor CA Scrambler is not used to this:

Not "cold weather" related, but after driving this Scrambler the other day, I noticed that it is leaking fuel out around the top of one of the injectors. It is leaking between the injector body and the injector pod. Hopefully, it just a tore O-ring. I will inspect it and update in a few days, once it warms up

Pulled the leaking injector out of the pod this weekend, and found this:

I must have tore the o-ring when I reassembled the injector pod. A new o-ring, lubed with ATF this time, fixed the problem.

Grease works really well for those o-rings.

This one has been running/driving pretty well. No real problems, until a few days ago, gas gauge quit. So, before Sand Blast, a few more things to do to this one:

1) Fix gas gauge
2) Install new shifter floor plate/boots
3) Borgeson steering shaft
4) Door panels/door weather striping

Will try to start working on this one again, soon, that's it for now

I decided to fix the gas gauge in this Scrambler this weekend. The factory gauge quit, was showing 12 volts coming out of the "jumper strap" post, so I knew it was fried.

I had a "spare" set of these in the garage, and since I couldn't find a factory gauge, I installed this set:

I have a set of these gauges in my Red Scrambler, and they work perfectly. They are made by Stewart Warner, they are an "improved" design, but they are pricey. But, they work, unlike the other crap replacement gauges

In order to install them, and make it easy on me:

1) Prop up top
2) fold down windshield
3) remove dash pad/steering column trim
4) remove almost all of the dashboard bolts
5) remove lighter
6) reach in from the top to unfasten the top two speedometer fasteners


Once the speedometer is removed, it is fairly easy to swap out the gauges.

Quick picture of the rear, showing these plastic "isolaters" that are part of the new gauges. The new gauges have small copper grounding plates that rub up hard against the speedometer case.

And from the front side.

They look "stock" once installed, and more importantly, the gas gauge works!!!!!!! I have an aftermarket temperature gauge, but I will probably install a "stock CJ" sending unit in the engine, and also hook up this temperature gauge.

About an hour to get the speedometer out, about 30 minutes to swap out the gauges, and about 45 minutes to button it all back up. But, for a working gas gauge, it was worth it.

Yep, fold and tumble. I plan on making some brackets that will bolt to the stock floor holes to mount the seat brackets on, whenever I get around to it

Thanks The gauge swap out is pretty easy, except on the wallet It is a pretty easy swap, just take your time removing the original gauges, they fit really tight against the little light bulb tube things

The floor ones mount really close to the single threaded hole that is already there. But are you going to drill for the side brackets or just install it so it doubles as an ejector seat ?
