Sad day for a long time Jeep owner.

Ford pinto. Exploding fuel tanks from rear collisions . The company knew about the long before it acknowledged the problem.

But there was no conspiracy to purposely create an exploding gas tank.
VW/Audi and now maybe Fiat/Jeep/Ram purposely and intentionally defrauded its customers for profit.

:banghead::banghead::banghead:Ford knew that it could be a problem before production and chose to continue. These are only the issues that the consumer has learned about about . Some we hear about from media politics and some from the failure of the products themselves. If you think that any of these companies have your best interests in mind think again . They all knowingly cut corners at the consumers cost even if you don't know or have not found out about it YET. How cheap can we make it? How much can we get them to pay? Currently the technology exists to manufacture high quality ,far more efficient ,longer lasting vehicles than are on the market today. But that wouldn't have us buying newer models every 2-5 years.

But they did not conspire ahead of the fact to create an exploding gas tank,GM did not conspire to create a poor ignition switch.
Damage control and poor customer service is different than sitting down with your engineers and figuring out a way to defraud buyers into thinking they were getting a fuel efficient diesel that complies with EPA specs.
I don't see a parallel here.

I think you are splitting hairs there. This is becoming an argument for arguments sake. You certainly don't have to defend your opinion to anyone here. Do what you feel is right.

To purposely create or to know ahead of time (like both GM and Ford did) and continue anyway...I really don't see a difference there. Secondly, exploding gas tanks and faulty ignition switches contributed to people being killed, beating EPA standards did not.

Ford did know about the potential problem and moved forward. Also did not acknowledge until it could not be ignored. Toyota break system,Firestone tires, etc. It is not about one manufacturer getting caught .It is about a system that says its okay until you get caught.

This thread just needs to end. It's just redundant at this point.

1) No one can answer for FCA or the Jeep brand here nor any of the other manufacturers.

2) decide for yourself what you do with your own money with the information you have available.

End of story.

Who would buy a VW diesel knowing it may have to be scrapped?
The one VW diesel owner I know is unable to turn in her VW, she tried, they won't take it,she was told to wait for notification, will it happen in a month? In a year?
Unknown.
Her VW is affected,a price was determined, but it is not as simple as just turning it in,they won't take it.
The fact is,VW is only accepting Diesels if they trade them in for a Gas VW,everybody else has to wait.

Sorry, but I don't believe this is exactly correct. The dealers will buy your car from you ahead of the buyback at a reduced price, knowing they will make money on the new car sale and the difference from the buyback amount. This is a dealership program. I don't believe that the corporate buyback gives any preference to those planning on buying another VW. You should get your spot in the queue based on when you submitted the paperwork. BTW, we have a dirty diesel bug.

We started our buy back paperwork in September. In October we uploaded our documents (copy of dvr license, registration, and bank info). Then we got to wait... and wait. And wait! The website they created shows the documents were accepted and reviewed and accepted again. Then the process stopped. Once they have your info they review the paperwork. A second and third party review the paperwork. From there they are supposed to generate an "offer letter" . That is the infuriating part. You submit the paperwork and have to simply wait for an offer letter that is in limbo. They set up a call center to supposedly answer questions. It's worthless. We called once a week, then once a day, finally every hour just to be a pain in Their ***. None of the call center people have any real info other than "yes, your paperwork is correct and has been processed ". Ok, when do we get out offer letter? "We don't know".
It became infuriating dealing with this.
So last week we (finally) received our offer letter. Grabbed the wife and hustled to the dealership to have it notarized and sent back in. About 3 hours after it went in we got an email to schedule a turn in date. Yippee!, right?
Uh... no. The very earliest date they had was 2 MONTHS down the road!
Since being sucked into this nightmare we have been (barely) making our car payments and paying full coverage insurance on a vehicle we can only drive occasionally and never in bad weather lest it get wrecked. We had to buy new tags for it. It has tires that are only about 7 months old. Since its currently snowing the car will sit until the weather clears.
The class action suit will force VW to buy the car back. No idea what they will do with all of them but the consensus is there will be no fix.
And while they are offering a "we're sorry we got caught and screwed you" payment, it will not fix my opinion of them. The wife doesn't care either way but she doesn't seem to understand (or want to) why this is inexcusable. We bought a car at a premium, sold on its performance/efficiency, and were sold a red herring. The monies we will receive by way of a weak attempt to rectify the issue will be used to make an old Jeep into a daily driver. At least I know what to expect from that truck.

So under what circumstance would you ever buy another VW?

I'm the wrong guy to ask that question too. I already did.

Me? Never. The wife has a "thing" for VW and was drooling all over the awe Jetta wagon. I told her when she buys it to make sure the divorce papers are included in the contract.

As for FEEP, I'll wait and see how that pans out. There's a bit of a witch hunt going on right now for all things diesel. It's like we have to technology and excellent diesel powered vehicles but we continue to shoot our selves in the foot by allowing the EPA to run roughshod over us. Suicide.

Yes,in all fairness,I will wait and see If Fiat is indeed guilty.
In the meantime,I will not purchase that SRT.
And I will not buy any Jeep product produce by Fiat if they are found to have defrauded customers.

While I would love to see this all work out fine and the pressure on diesel go away, I am not that optimistic.
My big issue is the only way to avoid buying "foreign" is to restore an old vehicle and use only US made OEM parts. There is a line to be drawn somewhere.
Now if I could find an old VW or MB diesel, swap it into my 67 commando...fully restore everything else, how is that Not a better deal than a new car purchase with a car note?

The only reason I have looked past foreign ownership with Jeep is because I have always owned a jeep since the late 80's.
I will not be able to look beyond foreign ownership if that company commits fraud for profit.
I could justify owning a Pre fiat jeep, but thats not what I wanted my 10th jeep to be.
I wanted a new SRT GC or a new Jeep pick up.
Bought my first jeep 30 years ago,and my first new one in 1990-Its hard to see the brand come to this.
Its so disappointing.

I concur. It is hard to watch and kinda depressing. For me, I'll just stick with the old stuff and call it good. I can't change global economics by myself.
I'd much rather toodle around in a fully restored MB/GPW than any of the plastic junk on the dealership lots today. Funny thing is, park a WWll Jeep next to a compass or patriot and ask a child to point to the "Jeep".
