God Nooooooooooooooooo!

Crap..... No Galv.

After the frame has been sitting at the galvanizer for 2 weeks they have decided that they will not dip it because they are afraid it will warp. I asked if they could weld temp bracing to it and they said that would make it worse???? I thought I had seen others dip their frames without issue. I guess I will just paint it with chasis saver

I took my Matkins frame to Columbus Galvanizing on the South side of Columbus and they dipped it the same day I dropped it off...no issues....Charged me $150 from memory + they did a bunch of other parts....

Update

Over the weekend I cleaned and wire brushed the frame, put three coats of "Chasis Saver" paint. Turned out pretty good but not as nice as the old frame. I was not able to media blast the new frame. I finish welded the motor mounts and painted them a hammered bronze, the skid and tranny cross member the same. I then re-assembled the rolling chasis. Now all that is left to do is:

No Fab Required - Just Bolt in:
-Exhaust
-Fuel Plumbing
-Brake Plumbing
-Drive shafts
-Body
-Front Clip
-wiring harness
-Steering Column
-Steering Box

Fab Required
-Tube Fenders
-Parking Brake Linkage
-Steering Shaft

I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel..........agian :)

Good to hear, sorry about the galvanizing issue, never heard that one before.

Keep up the good progress!

Update

I have made some progress (slow) in the past couple of weeks. The body now sits on the new (to me) rolling chasis. The only parts I am missing is a steering shaft (have one to modify - cj shaft to a yj column), a steering wheel, and my new hydroboost from Vanco. Now its just a matter of time before she is back on the road (with full insurance coverage)!

Awesome man. Nice to hear you are getting this thing back together.

Is there a particular reason why you went with the Vanco system? I know the hydroboost is on the expensive side?

Tommy

After putting this much time/effort/money into the project, and then wrecking it, a Vanco brake system is money well spent. Plus I still want to run hydroboost. Vanco takes all of the guess work out of it. The hydroboost I used before was out of a Astro from a junkyard. It was functioning properly, plumbed properly, installed properly, but still failed for some unknown reason. To be honest, Im still a little scared to use hydroboost, but testing will be overkill this time.

Anybody have an extra cj steering column. I was going to use a YJ column that I have but I decided I want to use my existing headlight & wiper controls on the dash. The YJ has them on the stick.

Tilt column? Reason I'm asking is GM made that Wrangler style column without wiper controls. I have the piece to replace the wiper switch, but you would have to tear down the upper column. There are turn signal arms available without wipers both with and without cruise too. And that way you could still keep the high beam controls on the lever, and off the floor. The connector off the floor switch just goes to the column then.

I've rebuilt quite a few columns, I currently have a Wrangler tilt with interval wipers/no cruise and a non-tilt with standard wipers/no cruise in stock. I also have all the connectors to make that Wrangler wiper switch mate with the CJ harness.

Let me know if you need any help.

Right, I can only imagine. Only reason I asked is that I just did a Master Power Brakes dual diap. booster and larger bore Master on my non hydroboost braking system. Stops with the quickness with 39" tires. I still have the stock proportioning valve in line. A guy on pirate4x4 gave the info I needed. Definately a cheaper option than the VANCO system.

Slowly picking at it . Hopefully I will have a bunch done this weekend. I've torn down 2 steering columns twice and that is a pain. I should get one into the jeep this weekend. The new Hydroboost should go in this weekend. Should be able to finish up the plumbing. Get the motor running. I still need to fab a new air intake, tube fenders, and rear seat bracket.

Update

Well I have gotten a bunch done on the Jeep in the past few weeks. I tell you what though, I always look forward to summer because I think I will have time to work on projects, but I never end up finding the time. Anyway, I went through the brakes with a third party, and they and I believe that they function properly. I will do a pull test by hooking a truck up to the jeep and having someone try and pull the jeep while I hold the brakes in the jeep. Steering is done minus final alighnment. I have wiring bug I need to find. The tail lights stay on as soon as the battery is hooked up. Fuel lines are plumbed and flushed. Coolant plumbed and flushed, radiator holds water (good). Power steering and hydroboost plumbed, flushed, checked (I need to relocate the res. so I can add hose to the fill side to add capacity). Front bumper mounted. The greatest part of the weekend, I hooked up the battery, cycled the fuel pump a few times to bring up fuel pressure, pulled the trigger and she fired right up. Hoping to have her on the road (fully insured) within the next few weeks. Going to buy a tubing bender to build my tube fenders and add to my cage. The wife had the camera all weekend so I will take pics tonight or tommorow and post.

Awesome  Can't wait to hear you went for a successful test drive!

I'm sorry to hear about the jeep.

I live in college hill. The jeep is at a buddy's shop over by LaSalle. I was out of town this weekend, but my buddy and his brother took another look at the brakes and made some adjustments. I need to buy 1 new caliper as one seized. They also discovered that the intake manifold broke in the back where the motor his the firewall. They fixed that, cheers for good friends who will work on your crap without you! Here are some pics.

Insurance was liability only. I should have pushed it into the garage and set the garage on fire :)

It really has not cost much to fix. Just time. I got an entire rolling chasis for cheap and then sold parts off of it to offset the cost.

You need to take it to the nationals for a good shake down run. We'd love to see it prove itself.
