cool deal on the decals!

i didn't know the Honchos came with a winch option! I now have to find that setup in addition to a Honcho, damn, thanks a lot ;)

Cool that you're helping Phoenix Graphics, there must be some requests for Honcho decals for them to post a wanted ad on IFSJA. J Trucks finally coming into limelight? :D


The Type II Flex N Gate bumpers are indeed hard to find.
Only the 82-88 uses the Scrambler plastic ends.
81 was a one year only where bumper was couple inches taller so plastic ends are larger.
Earlier J Truck from around 73-80 Type I bumpers had metal ends.

What is harder to find is the drawtight drawbar frame mounted receiver hitch that fits underneath the bumper.



There are 2 different Jeep SE hidden winch kits and 2 above the factory bumper winch / brushguard combo's.
Finding the above factory bumper kit is 1000 times harder than finding a CJ Jambo brushguard.

Matter of fact....I've never even found a picture of the Warn Jeep SE Brushguard for FSJ.

Here is pic of the original type 1 bumper all metal on a 1978 J-10 I used to have. On the window sticker, the step bumper only cost 70 bucks ...(1978 dollars of course, total price of truck was only $8600) :rolleyes:

As far as I know, the 3rd best original IMO in world !


That was just history of the Flex-N-Gate bumpers.

There were 3 mfg each making Jeep SE bumpers for 62-72 Gladiators.
Wraparound style: for thriftside or townside beds, with 3 different wheel bases.
Dockside wraparound is my favorite, lets chain style tailgate swing all the way down for easy loading.
And the super rare camper special bumper that extened for towing.
 
I got all the rubbings, pictures and measurements for the '81-'83 J10 Townside Honcho decals done and sent off to Phoenix Graphix. They have recieved them and are carefully going over them with their production team and will contact me if they need any other pics or measurements. It was more difficult than I had first thought and the misting rain didn't help matters. They said they would keep me posted on their progress. By the way, they are still needing photos and rubbings for the '81-'83 J10 Sportside Honchos as well as '79 - '80 J10 Sportside AND Townside Honchos so if you have one or have access to one and are willing to do the work let me know and I can give you the contact info for the person you need to talk to at Phoenix Graphix. Here is a picture of the '81 Honcho I used for the rubbing. I don't know what the green "fungus" is in the pic, it just showed up when I downloaded it (if you live in the PNW you probably didn't even notice it as everything up there has a nice layer of moss on it :))

This week I got some black silhouette "mockup" decals from Phoenix Graphix that they made using the rubbings I made for them. These are just to test fit and see what needs to be tweaked to get the fitment as close to perfect as possible. There were only a few areas that need attention and adjusting, mostly on the bed sides and the hood decal. Once again I took lots of pics and measurements and sent them off.

The hood is way off but I think that is due to a mis-measurement on my part. Should be an easy fix.

I kinda like the look of the all black decals. If they would have sent me a set for the drivers side as well I might have just installed them!

Thanks! I'm pretty excited to see the finished product once they are finalized! I'm kinda suprised I have been the only one over on ifsja.org (as far as I know) to jump at the chance to help out with this project! PG is still looking for anyone with an '81 - '83 Sportside Honcho or a '79 - '80 Townside and Sportside Honcho with original decals to get the rubbings/demsions from. They have posted several "wanted" ads over there and as far as I know I've been the only one to respond. Not sure why but I for one enjoy helping and knowing that this will benefit many other Full Size Jeepers in the future. :shrug:

Looks like Phoenix Graphix has added the Honcho stripe kit to their website. I noticed that the hood stripe is missing from the kit. I have e-mailed my contact person about it and I believe they are sending me another mock-up hood stripe that should correct the previous problems and then that stripe should be included.

Well, I got the next set of mockup stripes from PG, this time in blue. They sent another hood stripe and a new bed stripe as well as a rear cab stripe as those were the pieces that needed the most adjustment. I'm happy to say that they all seem to fit very well with the exception of the bed stripe. It fits much better than before but still just need a little tweeking around the wheel well area. I have again taken lots of pics and measurements and sent them back to PG for review. The kit is pretty much finished up and they now have the full complete kit for sale on their website. Now I can't wait to see what it looks like on a restored Honcho!

The stripe isn't perfectly centered but it now has the correct angle to follow the hood lines like the originals:

In exchange for helping them out with the Honcho decals they sent me a complete set of '82 Scrambler stripes in blue! They really have been great to work with!

Unfortunately, they are not being reproduced. Very occasionally, NOS caps will show up on ebay or can be found by some other means, but they very hard to find. The 1982 and later J truck caps are the same as the CJ-8rear bumper caps so even more demand exists for these. For info, here are the original part numbers:

J536 3171 Right
J536 3170 Left
 
base color?

Hey PF... Whats the base color of the J-truck... I dig it. Reminds me of the early Willys Harvest tan which I think is an under appreciated/used color. :)
 
Does anyone know where I can pick up a set of the plastic end caps for the bumper mentioned in this thread? I have an original scrambler rear bumper but the plastic is destroyed.
 
Just a little update to this. I had a spare 360 out of a Grand Wagoneer I parted out that I sent to the machine shop and had bored .30 over, had the crank ground and the entire assembly was balanced. I'm now in the process of putting it all back together. I have two good friends helping me as this is the first time I've ever assembled an engine. Spent all day this last Saturday putting the bottom end together. Got a lot done but still need to install the lifters, roller rockers and other top-end stuff. Hopefully I can get it buttoned up next weekend.
