(Bio)Diesel '85 Jeep Scrambler Renegade build-up

I have been assembling parts for a diesel-powered Scrambler project. Well, after collecting most of what I needed (but needing a lot of work with a ground-up build), my project changed direction when I bought this today. It'll act as a HUGE catalyst for getting it done more quickly.

It's originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but has been in heated storage for the last three years only a 1/2 hour or so from my house.

'85 Scrambler Renegade
  • 97K miles (motor quit running...not sure why)
  • 258/TF-999 auto/D300
  • Rust-free frame/tub (minor bodywork required)
  • OEM clock/tach
  • Tilt column
  • Power steering
  • Power brakes
  • Intermittent wipers

Over the next few week, I'll be listing Scrambler parts I had previously collected. I already have friends interested in some of the big items, but will list a detailed rundown of what parts are available once I sort things out and determine prices.

I'll have to paint it, but it'll lose the 1/2 hard top in favor of this family-friendly full hardtop that I got from twmattox. I just have to research finding a proper paint color to match the original tan/spice color.

Thanks Eric...you're already on my good side. You had me at "this thread is worthless without pics". :D I'm very pleased with the CJ-8. I'll fill you in on more details eventually, and I'm sure you'll probably see it in-person at some point.

Thanks Burke. Yes, I still plan on installing the Nissan SD-33 diesel in this Scrambler. I'm running the same motor in my CJ-10a (see photo below).

i kinda hate to say this but that little tug is "cute"-- okay my bad. what a neat little jeep. the bed looks like a old military trailer. looks like your having too much fun.

That is a diamond in the not-so rough. So the motor's dead - your plan all along was to use the Diesel. Great find!

One problem - your super-secret scrambler project ain't super secret no mo.

Unless the existing motor is obviously blown, like a hole in the block, I'd give it try. See if you can get it running.
 
The 1985 version of INCA GOLD?

It dawned on me earlier today that Craig's new one has a very similar color to inca gold. I seem to remember someone building one that color a while back :D

I'm curious what the color name of the interior is, as well. I'll be looking for two (2) fold & tumble seats in the same color to install in the rear. The door panels look somewhat like nutmeg, but the other stuff is more of a tan color, as you can see.

Another bonus...I realized when I picked it up that it also has power brakes. I originally looked at it over my lunch hour, so I was in somewhat of a hurry. I was also somewhat in shock at finding a Scrambler this nice in Michigan. :D So, with the exception of air & cruise, it's pretty well loaded. Also, before I pull the motor for the diesel swap, I'll try to get the 258 running.

BTW, this Scrambler will probably get a Waste Veggie Oil (WVO) conversion, as well. I have been researching these kits for a couple months, and have a steady supply of WVO right under my nose (through my employer). We just ran into a couple at church this morning who are touring the U.S. in a WVO-converted RV, and are promoting environmental awareness. Check out their site: Live Lightly Tour. :)

Your interior color should be Honey. One of my '7's was that exact color/stripe combo and my interior is Honey. You can get SEM vinyl dye in "Camel" color and it is almost an exact match. I did my hardtop with the SEM stuff and it has held up very well (and is easy to touch up if you scratch it).
Dad's scrambler also has the honey interior (beige paint) and his hardtop color is closer to spice than it is to matching the honey interior. He bought his new so from the factory the top is close to the wrangler spice color, but if you want something that matches the interior get the SEM dye and use it.
 
Considering the rusty state my rig is in, I am jealous...I hate you:D ...very nice find!!!
