Sweet I am sure we will need lots of help along the way. Got the last of the parts this morning filled the bed of the truck again.
 
Not exactly a lurker, although I did check the joint out a couple of time before registering a few minutes ago. Looks like a great resource! By way of introduction:

I just bought my first CJ-8 yesterday after being on my wish list for about a decade or so. 1984, 88K, 6cyl, 5 speed. Not perfect, but solid with the rust just beginning to show in the usual places. It has the white factory soft doors, hard doors, short soft top, shirt hard top and a cover for the bed.

I'll be looking to do a little personalizing and maintenance, no wild mods. I prefer to keep things close to factory. The first items will be the purchase if a full length soft top and I'm trying to decide whether to go with matching two piece soft doors or a factory half door with removable soft or hard upper door. It's been a decade since I had a CJ so I'm catching up with the aftermarket options big time at the moment.

Looking forward to the project!

Sorry for the delay in responding - been crazy busy. The good news is part of that was driving the 'new' CJ-8! What a blast! I'd forgotten how much fun the old Jeeps were to drive! Anyway, her eis a pic of the '8 where I found it.

Not perfect, but very, very good condition. I do have a question to lead off, and I haven't sorted all the threads yet, but this is a pretty basic one, I think:

I want to install half-doors, preferably factory. Do th efactory half doors accept either a hard or soft upper half, and if so, who makes them these days?

That 's it for now. My first big mod will be to put the original white factory soft covers into storage and install a new, full length safari style softtop that will mate with the half-door install I have planned.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm looking forward to contributing here in the coming months.

Oh, I don't know. There may be a few of those white half tops out there somewhere ;) It's the combination of half top and tonneau that's rare! Awesome Scrambler!
 
Nice looking Scrambler! I love the look of the soft 1/2 top. Although they are less common then the 1/2 hard top I wouldn't say they are super rare. The tonneau cover is more rare and in white is even more so.

Hi, I figured I'd go ahead and introduce myself.
My name is Jim I just bought my First Jeep, a Scrambler this week! I'm going to pick it up next week in Georgia and I can't wait to start working on it. I live in Texas outside of Houston and work in the Oil Field in South Texas, I work a scheduled rotation with 2 weeks off every 4 weeks and I have been looking to pickup a project for a while this CJ-8 kinda fell in my lap so I jumped on it. Lucky it runs and is drive-able so I can still have some fun in it before I start rebuilding it. So far I really enjoy yalls forum here and have already seen a lot of useful stuff and have taken a lot of side notes on some things that will eventually be done to mine Ill post some pics once I get her home.
 
Here's a pic and the story.

I had always seen the jeep parked it the very back of my neighbor's lot until one day I noticed that he was having a garage sale and the jeep was up at the street and a had a sign in the window saying it was a CJ5 with a blown motor for sale for $500. I stopped and argued with him that it definately wasn't a CJ5 because the of the full doors but I wasn't sure what it was because I wasn't a jeep expert and had never seen one like it. He told me that he had overheated the engine 6 months prior and that he had an estimate of $4200 to replace the engine and decided to sell it instead. I told him that was an outrageous price and that he should shop around for a better price because it could probably be rebuilt for a lot less. He agreed and pulled the sign so I knew I had just talked myself out of a jeep. lol

Anyway, I gave him my number and told him to call me if he changed his mind. 8 months later I get a call saying that he was retiring and honestly would never get around to restoring it and if I was still intersted he would let it go for $400. I said sold.

After running the VIN number I saw that it was atcually a CJ8 and and after a little Google searching I found this great website and a lot more about Alaskan postals. It even has the original full nylon mesh headache rack that mounts to the roll bar.

Bottom line, the jeep runs but has a small knock. It has some rust through spots around the rear wheel wells, the winshield frame and the drivers floor pan has been replaced, but the frame, world cab and tub is almost rust free.

My plan is to tear down the engine this winter and rebuild it or put in a built 401 that's been sitting in the corner. lol
