OT: Retro Wrangler/Willys Pickup (long)

Awesome....Well If You do write one - Please let us know - I would love to get one...

And I must say You have done a Fantastic Job!
I look forward to reading and seeing all Your posts.

Bah, you guys are going to give him a swelled head...

I don't think he posted enough pictures :banghead:

;)

I successfully made the round trip to Scranton (a little less than 300 miles round trip), and got my new project home. The pickup towed beautifully, especially considering the size and weight of the trailer. I think the air-assist suspension in the rear really works well, and the longer wheelbase is good for towing. The only difficult part was the guy's driveway - I had to back this huge trailer (equipped with surge brakes) up a long, 30-degree slope snowy driveway. That was a bit of an adventure. Didn't like it one bit. Also didn't like the amount of salt on the roads here, my red truck is almost all white now :(

Tomorrow I'll get some photos of the project and start a new thread for it. Also tomorrow I'll check on the paint progress of the pickup hardtop, their plan is to paint it tomorrow afternoon, so if nothing prevents them from doing that, hopefully I'll have some pictures of some pretty red hardtop parts to share with you.

Go wash that purdy red one first!

Time to help me decide on my next project. Here's the thread starter: https://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22240. Please jump over there and we'll keep this thread just for the Retro Wrangler.

Update on the hardtop paint - I stopped by the body shop today and they didn't quite get to final paint today. Jamie told me he'd likely come in tomorrow to do the paint. He's done an awesome job cleaning up my body work, it's amazing how good the panels look. So still looking at Monday for assembly, or Tuesday if he doesn't get in to paint on Saturday.

Good news, bad news on the hardtop painting... the painting is done! The bad news, I won't be able to assemble and install the top today. There's no free space in the body shop today, they're too busy :(. I could take the parts home and assemble them, but that would risk handling damage, and the final buffing will be done when the top is assembled and on the truck, so I'd have to get it back to the shop anyway.

So for now, just a few shots of the parts sitting at the body shop waiting for space for assembly...

Oh the anticipation! Looks great!
This is taking longer than the main build plus the original paint! I guess the lesson here is don't expect a body shop to do "non-essential" work promptly during the snow crash season. :(

Oh well, if there's no room for me to work in the shop again tomorrow, I'll probably take the rear wall home and assemble that - Dynamat, interior wall carpet, install the window... I can easily do that without risking damage to the panel. I don't want to take the roof panel home though, it's really just a bit too big for one person to move around without risk of damaging the paint.

I guess this is going to go in painful baby steps... body shop is jammed this morning, perhaps I'll get some room there this afternoon for final assembly, but in the meantime I brought the rear panel home and assembled it. Below you can see outside and inside views, plus some detail of the Dynamat placement and interior carpet.

I'm going to try to go back to the body shop and assemble the headliner into the roof panel today so everything will be ready to quickly bolt up as soon as they've got some space.

Jeff,
I have a question - I am have a half hard top that I want to put the back glass into. But the previous owner cut the opening a little to big(I'm guessing)
I ordered a sliding rear window for the 83 top but there are gaps in the corners.
So I am thinking of reglassing and recutting the opening.
Can You, if You have them- give me deminsions on the correct whole size?

I am a novice so I need help.

Thanks in advance
Tim

Tim,
I'm not sure if the rear window in my hardtop is the same size as the Scrambler window - my hardtop is based in part on a CJ-10 metal hardtop, not the Scrambler hardtop.

But Matt Donahgy would certainly know the dimensions, in case you don't know who he is, he owns this board, and Gr8Tops (www.gr8tops.com). If you contact him I'm sure you'll get the info you need.
Jeff

PS: Matt - do you know if the CJ-10 window is the same size as the Scrambler window?

Another small bit of progress... went back to the shop and assembled the roof panel. Got the wiring in, CHMSL/bed light, satellite antenna, Dynamat, headliner, overhead console. Now all that's left to do is to bolt the major parts together and throw it on the truck. They've promised me some shop space at 4pm today, so I should get it fully assembled and installed later today.

Tim,

I'm going by memory on this; I purchased a slider for a '83 several years ago.
The '83 had two different size openings (I believe this was because of the addition of the roll bar mounted seatbelts)
The links below will take you to the two versions available for '83 with some basic dimensions.

If I'm correct about the seatbelt openings in the top you should be able to tell if yours is early or late '83 by the presence/absence of the openings.

Jeff, sorry for the hijack. Great job on your projects!

I'll post better photos when I get a chance to wash the truck and can take pictures in the daylight, but here's a few quick shots from the end of the day today. I hope you like it, I sure do!

Very Sweet

That thing is taking shape. Not sure how you maintain your patience. I'm chomping at the bit and it isn't even mine. Only thing different I would have done is the color, but I guess that will do until you can find some RED!!!!!
Just kidding, very unique and SWEET looking rig. You're very talented. Jeep should make one like that.
Keep the pictures coming.

The Links don't work. It just takes me to the google search page.:banghead:

Wow...does that look good, Jeff. I can't wait to see some more!
