Wow...does that look good, Jeff. I can't wait to see some more!
One more bad photo for tonight, snapped this one of the dirty truck in the dirty garage this evening. Hopefully better photos tomorrow.

Looks great, I am glad you went with the red top, but I hate that the build is finished. I have really enjoyed watching it all come together. I look forward to the next one.

Fantastic job Jeff  Don't you just love it when a plan comes together.

How did I know you and the shop would manage to get it together yesterday somehow ;)

Looks great, I bet you're already at the carwash or working on it yourself :D

My Blackberry buzzed with notification of this message as I was driving to the car wash... you know me too well now :)

Well I still plan to reupholster the seats in leather, so there's still a little bit more to come. :)

I was a little nervous taking the Retro Wrangler through the car wash for the first time, but I just couldn't post the first real hardtop photos of it covered in salt. Other than the water turning to ice the second I rolled off the end of the line, everything went fine. This is about as clean as it's going to get until the spring when I can hand wash it:

The model building phase of this project is complete. In the photos below you will see the completed Retro-Wrangler model posed along with it's inspiration and grandfather, a 50's Willys. In case you're interested, the Willys started life as a die-cast stakebed toy bank, I was able to convert it to a scale model pickup without too much trouble.

I managed to hack together a soft top, so you can see what the truck will look like in the first phase of construction before I get to the hardtop fabrication. Found a spare to put on the bedside; also finished the details - front bumper, mirrors, fog lights, tail lights...

Any further thoughts or comments before we declare this thread done and we move on?

Jeff

Just had to point out that this post was from JUST UNDER one year ago (1/23/08).

Amazing...

Eric,
Now that's the hardtop is done, you'll need to drive it again!

I bet it sounds great with all that dynamat and carpet/headliner in there!

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out how to pick up a 360/727 from Randy in OR, what's the per day rental cost on this thing??? ;)

Need the side by side with the model ;)
I'm really pleased how closely the final product follows the model. Building the model was really a worthwhile exercise. I'll have to do some "exact same angle" photos of both when the weather is nicer.

I feel like it's taken a really long time! There were several weeks of delay waiting for the initial paint and the sewing of the soft top; then several months of me being lazy between phase 1 and phase 2 and also being spoiled by having the use of Matt's hardtop; then almost six weeks waiting for the hardtop to be painted... my project plan didn't account for those delays or my laziness :)

It's really quiet and very solid feeling overall. The doors close with a solid sound you just don't get in the factory hardtops. No rattles anywhere in the vehicle. It's awesome to drive, we'll have to figure out how and when you can drive it.

But that's probably not the test drive I'm talking about. It would be a cool road trip tough, although quite a bit less cool than your "Bringing the Postal home" road trip. This weekend I'm driving it to Massachussetts, and over the next few months I've got some other trips planned, maybe the Easter Jeep Safari, maybe the Midwest Willys Jeep Reunion in Tennessee in May, maybe the York Jeep show. Time to enjoy it now!

EDIT: Of course Randy has earned a drive in it too, we'll have to figure out how to arrange his drive!

:D :D :D I can't wait! (Although I'll have to...:( )

Jeff, those pictures are great, and the Jeep is simply amazing. I think I stared at those pics for about 10 minutes!

There simply aren't words for the vision, execution, and finished product.

Awesome Job!

As I was admiring your fruits of labor, Jannie walked by and saw the freshly washed photos. She ask me if I could convert her 4 door TJ into a "Crew Cab". I told her to get in touch with you.:D

4-door TJ?

4-door TJ

I bought it from Matt when he bought out TCV. It's not assembled, I have the chassis, already stretched, body, mounted & floor pan complete. Full hard top installed minus windows. I have all the pieces to complete except the time. "B" piller is there, doors are there (4 fiberglass 1/2 doors) I believe all the pieces including the full length rocker moldings are there. I was planning on using the 501 Caddy/Turbo 400/DANA20 set up that I have to make a Grandkids hauler for Jannie I'llee if I can dig up some photos. (Watch out Eric, this could be dangerous)
