Project Money Pit!

I soda blasted mine before I began repairs and I'm glad i did. I found way more rust and bondo than I imagined. Here is the dilema. I spent $1200.00 on soda balsting another $1800.00 on sheetmetal. I would have been better off buying a brand new tub and would have saved about a months worth of labor. Just something to think about. Oh, BTW, your doing a heck of a job.
Captain Jack is correct, soda blasting removes the paint but not the rust which was fine in my case because I cut out all the rust, i didn't treat or leave any rust.

Im glad you mentioned that! I was adding up the repair panels last night, without shipping I'm close to 900! Then I have to get them put in and then still have them fix some other stuff! So this week, I'm putting it on a trailer and taking it to a couple different body shops to get w rough estimate on what it'll cost to have the repairs done. So I'm kind of in the same situation that you had.
I had a guy offer me 1,000$ for my purple tub the way it sits!
So, I've been deciding what to do for quite some time now!
I don't really want to go with a fiberglass tub, if I was decide to go with a stepl tub... Does anyone have any suggestions in where to go?
This is the hard part in to decide what to do!

I have been meaning to post this picture of the passenger windshield hinge area for a little while now but it kept slipping by me...

IMHO if you can get $1,000 I would go with a new steel body, Heck I'd do it if I could get $100.00. LOL. Some of the fiberglass tubs still need some fitting done. I personally think steel would be stronger with less fatigue and with the good paint and or under coating it should stay corrosion free. When I did mine I put 2 coats of epoxy primer on everything and then I sprayed a thick bedliner under the body and fenderwells, the bed and cab floors. I did this for 2 reasons, one corrosion protection and two for sound deadening. Luckily I had this rotisorie which made the job much easier. As you can see from my pictures this was quite a job, and I am a retired sheetmetal journeyman. My Plasma torch and welding machine are now well used.
Ps. By going with the new tub you also eliminate about all the body filler(bondo).

Where would you recommend to get a new steel body from?
With the steel bodies everything is already pre drilled ?
Are there nutserts for everything as well?
Unlike the fiberglass bodies Ive heard from people you have to use carriage bolts and throughout bolts with nuts ( I'm not really liking this idea )

I'll have to check, but I found a couple of what looked like good tubs with the help of a lot of guys from this forum. I don't think I could have completed this project without them. So thanks guy's. The steel tubs I looked at included most all the the nut inserts and the like.

So i went to a couple body shops today...They all told me it was right around $3,000 to do the labor and prime the new parts. I would be supplying the body parts which will cost around another 1000-1200 depending on shipping and if other panels are needed.
With this being said i geuss it will be cheaper or just about the same price to go with a new tub! :banghead:
Im going to look around for a pretty close to rust free tub from other states or something and possibily having it shipped.
If anyone has any leads on where to look that would be great!

Just for fun

Just go buy a new tub. You won't regret it.

Have not got much done.
I have a question out there for anyone out there with some knowledge on these little parts i came across.
I am wondering what these are for and what they are worth?
Any comments would be great.

Your parts in the pictures are mounting parts for an OEM tonue (sp) cover. The small parts and footman loops are for the 2 bows and the channel holds it to the bulkhead.

What would you say a reasonable price is on these parts?
What are the 3 little other "channels" used for, are they part of the OEM tonue cover.

The reason I ask is I am interested in purchasing.
Does anyone have a OEM tonue cover, or any parts I may be missing.
Or have any pics of a one.

I don't know what the 3 short channels are for, I have 3 similar ones mounted for a windjammer. Where were they mounted?

I'd hate to try and price parts like that, I can only say I don't think it'd be much in their condition.

They weren't mounted any where they were just hanging around in the bed.
