Project Money Pit!

Ya i took off the lonbg vent and grill...the 4 screws under the grill i must have over looked.
Tanks!

i got the tailgate off and almost got the rollbar out.
all the bolt for the roll bar came out nice and clean but 2 :banghead:
dont have any pics of what the floor looks like under the rollbar supports yet, hopefully this week.

I only had to drill out one torx bolt on the tailgate due the PO stripping it in there

all the torx bolts for the hinge that go into the body are stipped as well :banghead:
i will be drilling and tapping all of them

im shooting to have the body off by the end of the week and at the sandblaster, if not by the end of the week the begining of next!

!

Have some of those same issues on our projects.
If you can get the bolt heads drilled out and get the hinges out of the way.
Then weld a nut to what is left of the screw, sometimes they will then come right out.
I think it's the combination of the heat from the welding and the extra leverage you can get on the nut welded to boltd with wrench or ratchet. Good luck!

Sand Blasting

I went and got a quote from a local shop for sandblasting the scrambler tub.
They quoted me $50/hr...this being said i am wondering if anyone had any experience with paying someone or doing it themself to, i am wondering how long it took...
Also is there any specific things that shouldnt be sandblasted?
i plan on taking pretty much everything that had been removed from the body...
Seat risers, slider, brake booster, brake and clutch pedals, gasl pedal, grill, fenders, tailgate, hinges, etc...
So im pretty much wondering how long it took for other people to do this and if $50/hr seems pretty reasonable?
Also if i should know of anything that should not get sand blasted!
Thanks!

Read up on here and elsewhere, I've seen people comment that sandblasting can warp the tub sheet metal. I think walnut shells or something like that was suggested... can't comment on the cost/time but wanted to throw out that one comment.

When the 42 Ford was blasted. Because of the rust and condition of the paint. They used aluminum oxide. Does not cause excess heat and because of the shape it leaves a textured surface for primer to grip to. When I blast the Postal - this is the way I'll go.

Baking soda works well if you're not dealing with rust. It must be cleaned off well for paint to stick properly. Same with walnut shell as they are an oily nut.

Should I have it sandblasted before I have replacement panels welded in or wait until afterwards?
Or when thw replacement panels are put in, should I just have them sand everything down?
I don't want to really deal with the tub warpping...

Blast first - uncovers all spots needing help - primer right away to stop flash rust - begin fixing rusted out spots

Ok, so I talked to a couple local body shops. They suggested not to do sandblasting because it will warp it that bad. So, now I am considering soda Blasting, has anyone had experience with this? Also what kind of prep work is required after to get it primed?

See my post #48. Baking soda is for paint not rust removal.

That looks exactly like the TH400/D20 I pulled out of a Jeepster....

Body off the frame!

i got some more pics of the body off the frame today and also the rollbar has been removed, all the bolts but 2 came out clean!

There are 3 holes in each of the rear roll bar floor supports ( see pics ) are they factory, in other words are they supposed to be there?!?!

Then there is 1 in each of the front roll bar floor supports ( see pics ) once again, are they supposed to be there?!?!

Every single of the body bolts broke on me! :banghead:
The previous owner made a body lift out of solid metal pucks :banghead:, which caused the bolts to seize inside of them!
Other then some minor surface rust on the underside of the body it is super clean!
