Randyzzz Scrambler Restification Thread!

Been a few weeks since my last update. I've been busy getting my $150.00 Trooper driveable. So, with a total of $350.00 invested including tags, I drove it to work today. Seems good on gas, comfortable too. Now that I have a winter driver, back to the Scrambler. OK, Eric, here's the Trooper pic...;)

I had a Trooper like that for 14 years, sure do miss it!! Never should have sold it. :(

Randy, the Hammerite should look good...show some of that "reptilian look" up where it's more visible! :D

I understand BigWalton's point, but I think body color would look very 'finished' and professional. Painting it in a contrasting color calls attention to the cage and not the Scrambler as a whole. Just an opinion.

Well, I have been searching, and playing with Photoshop. Decided a contrasting color is not for me. Looks good on the speedshapes, but not in person. Leaning towards either body color or Hammerite silver. I am planning on doing all the exterior armor in Hammerite silver, so it makes sense to follow through with the cage. So, here's another question- I am doing a dash along the designs of the one in the yellow Jeep posted on a prior page. With Hammerite silver tubing around the panels, the Aluminum panels might lose their "pop". How about black wrinkle finish panels, or maybe the smoother black bedliner spray on the panels? Or...body color dash panels, with the contrasting silver border tubes?

dash

Well Line-x can be sprayed in colors. I think it is a great option. The guy who does Line-x in Stayton, Wade Starbuck does a great job and cheap compared to others. There is a Line-x place in Bend, much closer to You. By the way keep your eye out for a straight frame. You always find deals. Check out this guy for dash, ideas http://sites.google.com/site/doubledfab/

I think any kind of texture other than a brushed metal finish would look out of place on a dash. Just my opinion.

Been doing some mock-ups, I'm liking the silver cage with the body colored dash panels. Sort of a tribute to the stock body colored dash, only with my design.

I'll keep an eye out for a frame....

Speaking of deals, I picked up a Ford Powerstroke Factory High Performance air filter assembly today, for next to nothing. Uses one of the Donaldson filters. New, even! I don't know if I can make it fit, but it would be a heck of a filter if I can...

Any progress lately on this? I have been watch closely as I am wanting to do this engine/tranny swap one day.

Randy you are an inspiration. I have just spent a couple of hours reading through your build. One question on your seats. I have good wide seats in my Scrambler but my wrangler seats are narrow and for a guy who weighs 140 pounds. They have the two right and left high sides. I am looking for just a straight across seat for a big bum. Any suggestions?

I have been making progress, although most of it has been planning. The cage has been back in and out again because I forgot a couple of measurements... such as placement of the shifters, console, and lockbox. I thought I would be able to determine by measuring from known points, but no go. I also have been working on designing a front winch mount, because that will involve cutting and rebuilding the front cross member. I need to concentrate on welding in all my cage gussets and tabs, and getting it painted. Holidays, family time, and watching football have been taking away work time too, but it's all good. I do need to get it running before the weather gets good again...;)

As far as seats, I find the PT Cruiser seats fit my big butt pretty good. I'm 6'2" and 290lbs, and I am really comfortable in them. My only complaint is that they are not as cushy on the bottom as a suspension seat, so hard drops are felt a bit more. If I ever replace them I'll probably look into the Mastercraft Baja RS seats, although I think I'll have to win the lottery first.

Wow!! Looking good and coming along nicely, Randy. Been so busy with my head up my, um, outbuilding, that I hadn't realized that you were back at it.

OK, I made some progress today. I welded in 22 tube gussets. These are not the flat plate style but a contoured bent piece of thick sheet metal. Here's some pics.

Then I got curious about colors again. I broke out the rattle cans, and tried silver, Hammerite silver, and body color.

Then I called my expert panel of judges for an opinion. :D All agreed, the Hammerte made the welds look the best, but it was too busy. The copper color looked nice, but would probably look plain against the rest of the body. Everyone liked the smooth silver color. But...my wife also said I need to smooth the welds... :( So, I guess I'll be spending some time with filler and sandpaper. Yay. I still have to add some tabs and upper seatbelt mounts before the painting starts.

I also think I may have found a paint booth I can use, so the body might just get painted before reassembly!

You are the man

When I grow up I want to be You, cause U the man. That looks awesone. the silver is the best

Nothing really Picture-Worthy this weekend. I did get the seat belt mounting points installed, and added a couple of short tubes to triangulate the outer upper brace between the A and B pillars.

For the seat belt upper mounts, I cut the sleeves out of an old TJ roll bar and reused them. They worked great. Beats the heck out of an all-thread coupling nut.

I'm waiting for the dash plate tabs. Hopefully they will arrive this week. Once they get welded in it will be time to prime and paint the cage.

Hate to bother you...

This thread has saved me so much work and I want to thank you very much for posting it. I am doing the same build but mine is a cj 7 (I'll get an 8 someday) I am at the starting point with mine, got another frame and prepping it now. My 5.3/4L60 is out of an 01 yukon. Can you give me some details on your motor mounts? It would save me a ton of work. I know you used the MORE units. Do they come with holes in them to mount to the frame (if so did you use those in any of the stock frame holes)? If I knew how/where you placed them on the frame and the details of you conversion plates it would save me from pulling the body on my running cj to do the setup. I am not runnig a/c. Is your motor still offset to the driverside as I know with these mounts that is how they are set up? I hate to bother you at this stage of your build. You mentioned selling the conversion plates awhile back, if you are i would be interested just so I know I would get it right the first time. Also looking for the same set of exhaust manifolds if you know of any. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Also where can I find you on ebay? Thanks again, dave

Wow this project is really moving. I love all the pictures and I am looking for a cage Idea and I believe yours is exactly what I am looking for except I think I will keep my original seat mounting. I too am going with the Metallic Orange on my CJ-8. I purchased the paint last week from Summit for $113.00 for the Kit. Please keep coming with the pictures!!!
